Synopsis

Makoto Hitsujiya transfers to a new high school and meets a strange classmate named Takehiro Kokudou. Kokudou introduces him to Bugs, a variety of phenomena that produce certain outcomes only if specific sequential actions are performed. The phenomena can range from bird droppings appearing on a sidewalk after pressing a certain combination of vending machine buttons to being able to lift weights beyond one's normal physical limits.

Gradually, Hisujiya and Kokudou's friendship grows as they take advantage of the handy—and sometimes outrageous—conditions to activate Bugs that transcend the laws of science and humanity. Following Kokudou's footsteps, Hitsujiya becomes addicted to triggering these anomalies. But when he discovers a bizarre set of conditions required for a ridiculous Bug that can change his future, his curiosity may have serious consequences.

It might be bold to call this a 10/10 series when there's so few chapters out at the moment, but this series really does feel so well-put-together that it feels almost... Impossible. Artwork this detailed, writing this good, concepts this imaginative, humor this funny. All of it combined into one series that just... Works. It does a fantastic job of conveying the emotions and feelings of the characters too. Something about the way the art is drawn perfectly conveying trauma and emotional baggage, just hits in a way few other manga have been able to manage. All while staying so wonderfully absurd.

It's a mystery like a zany Otherside Picnic focusing more on investigating bugs (strange superpower-phenomena from unusual rituals) than on urban legend ghosts. Maybe a little like Mysterious Disappearances. But no romance or ecchi. The main crux of the show is unraveling the mysteries surrounding these bugs by investigating them and using them for various ritualistic superpowers with potentially severe risks such as glitching out of existence or being corrupted. The main challenges they face are: other dangerous individuals also using the bugs including a cult, transdimensional entities and parallel worlds, loss-of-self from glitching out from excessive bug use, permanent consequences caused by dangerous bugs.

If you like Dandadan, try this one! The art style is amazing, there are many similarities. I'd say the only difference and maybe concern are the characters so far. Only 9 chapters in of course, but I'm hoping we get do get some focus on them and not just world building. It has an incredibly unique setup. Unfortunately the release schedule is at 1 month intervals, but the chapters are very long so it's worth it. If you like "weird", this is definitely for you. There aren't a lot of manga that share this genre. Throughout, the pacing seems good, and its very detailed.
