Mairimashita! Iruma-kun

Fourteen-year-old Iruma Suzuki has been unfortunate all his life, having to work to earn money for his irresponsible parents despite being underage. One day, he finds out that his parents sold him to the demon Sullivan. However, Iruma's worries about what will become of him are soon relieved, for Sullivan merely wants a grandchild, pampering him and making him attend the demon school Babyls.

At first, Iruma tries to keep a low profile in fear of his peers discovering that he is human. Unfortunately, this ends up being more difficult than he expected. It turns out that Sullivan himself is the chairman of the school, and everyone expects him to become the next Demon King!

Iruma immediately finds himself in an outrageous situation when he has to chant a forbidden spell in front of the entire school. With this, Iruma instantly earns a reputation he does not want. Even so, he is bound to be roped into more bizarre circumstances.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is one of the best examples I’ve seen of how established character traits and world-building can be used effectively in a slice-of-life fantasy story. What makes it especially remarkable is how deeply human the cast feels, despite the running joke that they are all demons.

The premise itself isn’t particularly original, but the execution is where the series truly shines. The story feels both unique and thoughtfully crafted. Iruma gives off the vibes of a classic shōnen protagonist: kind-hearted, deeply empathetic, and guided by a strong sense of justice and fairness. His defining trait, working harder than anyone else, is used ... very cleverly. Rather than simply empowering him to overcome obstacles through sheer strength, the story places him in situations far beyond his actual abilities, forcing him to rely on effort, adaptability, and the people around him.

Notably, Iruma isn’t the type of protagonist who constantly questions his surroundings or seeks to unravel grand mysteries. As a result, the narrative doesn’t hinge on intrigue or hidden truths, nor does it follow the typical battle-shōnen formula where conflicts are resolved through combat. Instead, nearly everything serves the world-building. The story takes its time, focusing so heavily on everyday demon school life that you almost forget there might be something larger lurking beneath the surface. This slow, deliberate pacing is part of what makes the writing feel so confident and clever.

That said, one issue does stand out. Iruma can sometimes feel like he has a bit too much plot armor, rarely facing lasting consequences or genuine failure. Because of this, the overall tension can be fairly low, and progress within an arc may take multiple episodes before it truly feels meaningful. He also occasionally carries a “messiah effect,” where nearly everyone is drawn to him as if he were a chosen one, despite his lack of conventional power, making it difficult for others to truly compete with him. In this context, the mid-season antagonist is surprisingly refreshing: petty, grounded, and genuinely believable, which helps reintroduce a sense of conflict.

Even so, Iruma’s relationships with the rest of the cast more than make up for these shortcomings. The characters are all incredibly endearing, so much so that you often find yourself wanting to see how they would interact even without Iruma present. Every gag feels carefully set up, and each arc or smaller story flows naturally into the next. The storytelling is loose in the best way, giving the impression that the narrative could branch off in countless directions at any moment.

I could ramble on endlessly about how well everything fits together, but simply put: it’s very, very good.

Mixed Feelings

Starts off very promising.

Its a fun anime about a very unfortunate kid with the worse parents.
They sold their son to a demon. This demon made him his grandson, and now he's attending demon school.
And due to mishaps after mishaps ends up becoming the most popular student there.

The anime is full of manufactured differences between the human and demon world. Where words like "friend", "date", and "fireworks" dont exist but pretty much every other word does. The demon world knows what gunpowder is but doesnt know fireworks...Its very selective. Whatever is needs for the plot.

Some episodes do start to drag on for some of ... the most basic plots. Like an episode dedicated to the main character learning how to catch a dodgeball. And a carnival plot that goes on for way too long.

The number of episodes should have been cut in half. 12 episodes instead of 23.
Even the intro is too long (3 minutes).
And the last episode of the season nothing happens. Its just random stuff.

The show just descends into boring tedium.

Well the synopsis of this anime promised. A boy named Suzuki Iruma is sold by his parents to a demon. Then everything becomes cliche.

The protagonist easily forgets his parents. He is sent to a demonic school where the song itself is supposed to be eating humans. One could be fascinated by how the activities in the demon world will be and how he will survive so that no one discovers that he is human, but what takes away his grace is that they do the same as all humans.

All difficulties are solved with the power of your benefactor. The story behind never progresses. ... It is a pink world, coffee shops, where you have to go to classes, make friends and do physical activity. Iruma is literally made to play dodgeball like another high school boy in a chapter. Even later they will watch an entire chapter of demonic idols. All the characters are generic, none stand out and they even become too childish to be a demonic world. Where is the survival then? There is not. It is a school like any other.

24 chapters too long for what they count. And I have no doubt that there are many better schools to visit in anime.
