Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho

One fateful day, Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent with a dim future, gets a miraculous chance to turn it all around when he throws himself in front of a moving car to save a young boy. His ultimate sacrifice is so out of character that the authorities of the spirit realm are not yet prepared to let him pass on. Koenma, heir to the throne of the spirit realm, offers Yuusuke an opportunity to regain his life through completion of a series of tasks. With the guidance of the death god Botan, he is to thwart evil presences on Earth as a Spirit Detective.

To help him on his venture, Yuusuke enlists ex-rival Kazuma Kuwabara, and two demons, Hiei and Kurama, who have criminal pasts. Together, they train and battle against enemies who would threaten humanity's very existence.

Yuu Yuu Hakusho may be one of the older animes around, but man is it a golden one. To start of our main character Yusuke is a delinquent who doesn't enjoy school and has a kind of shitty home life. But of course that isn't all there is to him, he also has a protective heart (not to be confused with a kind one). I love to see a protagonist whose personality isn't being a doormat to everyone around him to show of how 'kind' he is. Yusuke is protective to those he sees as younger/weaker than him. This is what starts off the whole ... story with Yusuke protecting a little boy. The story starts off quick paced, and it shows us within 3 episodes the basics of the world of YYK.

The animation is definitely something that might hold people back. The animation can be a bit slow at times or have unclear backgrounds, but this doesn't take away from the story at all. The sound design is also pretty decent, especially the opening/ending and during the fight scenes.

The other characters only add to the story. The side characters all have their own arcs and help to further the world building in the story. You can understand the motivations, dreams and hatred of the characters and love them for it.

A great watch for shounen fans who love the classics but still expect something unique, fun and emotional.

Mixed Feelings

Its ok...

For a 90's shounen anime its kinda impressive but its didn't age too well.
Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed the show none the less but it's not even close to one of the best shounen ever made.
My biggest issue with the story is the lack of identity.every arc the tone of the show changes drastically and new ideas are put in out of nowhere without much explanation.

There were 2 things that I really liked.
Team Urameshi were a very good and interesting cast of characters that made me keep watching even tho the plot went of the rails (especially Kuwabara who was the most ... relatable protag)

And of course The Dark Tournament which was the whole reason I decided to pick up the show in the first place. And while it wasn't perfect the battles that were good we're really good (Fight against Team Toguro or the fight against Chu are great examples)

The animation is dated even for the time and the Japanese performances were a bit flat. The dub was a little more tolerable but a bit cringe at times. The music is great no complaints.

It's a fun story with fun characters that you can turn your brain off while watching.

If I were a kid when I watched it then I could have given more but for me now it's a solid 7/10

The show starts mostly underwhelming; goes into straight up awful and disappointing by the end of the Dark Tournament arc; then goes on to its best written and IMO its only good arc, the Chapter Black; then hastily finishes neatly but underwhelmingly, supposedly diverging from the manga which the author didn't even want to work on at that point.

I wanted to see hxh's older sibling show, and even if it was mostly underwhelming mixed in with awful, it wasn't all bad. Crazy how much better hxh is, but there were hints of that brilliance in the Chapter Black arc which I could guess might've been ... even better if the author was given more freedom to finish it as he intended.
