Ninja Kamui

Seemingly an average man, Joe Logan leads a peaceful life in the countryside with his wife and child. However, the Logan family have actually assumed false identities to escape from Joe's past as a fearsome ninja assassin. Despite a string of high-profile murders of his former peers, Joe is sure that his new life is secure—but his tranquil bliss is soon shattered when his family is slaughtered by members of his former clan.

Left for dead, Joe wakes up in a hospital, unsure of how he survived the wounds that should have killed him. Police detectives Emma Samanda and Mike Moriss, assigned to investigate the Logan family's deaths, witness another attempt on Joe's life. However, this time Joe is prepared. Unleashing secret techniques, he easily dispatches his enemies, shedding his new identity in the process.

Embracing his old ways, Joe shrouds himself in his former persona, cutting through the organization he once served in the name of cold-blooded revenge. Assisted in his hunt by the detective duo, Joe will stop at nothing to kill his past and the demons hailing from it.

The idea was really interesting, and the plot is great too. I liked that they tried to go deeper and develop many of the characters.

The animation is actually pretty good, but it's not consistent. There are times when the drawings are really bad, especially when they're interacting. The action scenes were great, especially the CGI

... BUT I struggled to relate to the main character and a lot of the other characters. They tried to make them mature, cool and terse, but they didn't know how to make them charming. They just don't quite hit the mark. You never manage to connect with their ... universe.

I liked that this work drew a lot on other classic contemporary works.The mecha-style suits looked great, but they didn't add anything to the action scenes. It made the CGI easier for the animators, but it didn't make the fights any more appealing.

Mixed Feelings

Ninja Kamui is one of those anime that starts off with a bang but loses its grip as it nears the finish line. I honestly have mixed feelings about this series. The first half had me completely hooked. The raw action sequences, the intensity of the fights, the slick animation, everything screamed cool. It was fast-paced, brutal, and stylish, and for a moment, it felt like this could be one of the top-tier action anime of recent years.

The story of Joe Higan, a former ninja seeking revenge after losing everything, had all the ingredients of a gripping revenge thriller. The emotional weight carried in the ... first few episodes was powerful enough to connect you with the protagonist. There was a sense of purpose and focus in the direction, making every episode exciting and full of promise. The way the action was choreographed, mixing hand-to-hand combat with high-tech weapons, made for an adrenaline-pumping experience. As an action fan, I was genuinely impressed.

But then came the second half.

This is where Ninja Kamui started to derail. Somewhere along the line, the grounded tone of the anime took a backseat, and it transitioned into something that felt more like a mecha anime and not in a good way.
Suddenly, it wasn’t just about ninjas or revenge; it became about robots, futuristic tech battles, and plot twists that felt forced and unnecessary. For an anime that began with so much focus on martial arts and emotional stakes, this shift felt jarring and misplaced.

Don’t get me wrong, if you’re purely in for the action, Ninja Kamui doesn’t disappoint. The fight scenes remain visually stunning throughout the series. Every punch, slash, and explosion is crafted with energy and flair. But action alone isn’t enough when the story you’re following starts to lose coherence.

In the end, Ninja Kamui is a tale of two halves. One half that promises greatness and shows what this anime could’ve been, and the other half that tries too hard to be something it was never meant to be. It’s definitely worth watching for the incredible action, but don’t set your expectations too high for the narrative depth or consistency.

For me, it was a journey that began with excitement and ended with disappointment. A fan of the first half, but a critic of the second.

This series gets 3 stars for the three episodes it has that are actually worth watching. After that the series falls off so hard that I can’t tell you a single thing that happened, I was quite literally on the verge of falling asleep throughout the entire series following the third episode.This series loses all competence and worth the second that it introduces the whole mech thing that they tried to pull off. Maybe the manga is better but the anime felt like my eyes wanted to rip themselves out and smash into each other due to how poorly the animation gets as soon as ... they incorporate mechs and cg.
