Champignon no Majo

Deep within the Black Forest teeming with poisonous mushrooms, a witch named Luna lives alone. With skin that is poisonous to the touch and a breath that will kill if close enough, she is forced to stay secluded from nearby civilization. Even with these conditions, Luna still visits a nearby city to deliver medicine and buy new books to read.

Despite Luna having never done harm to any of the city’s residents, many are scared to associate with her, as she is a black witch in a kingdom ruled by white witches. Only able to watch from a distance while people receive her medicine and freely converse with one another, Luna is drawn toward their lives, even if it sometimes means putting herself in danger.

Champignon no Majo feels like watching a story gently unfold, almost as if someone is narrating a tale page by page. It reminded me a lot of shoujo anime from around 2009, at least that was the impression it gave me.

The story follows a witch named Lua, a very kind and gentle character who, despite that, is not welcomed by humans. Because of this, she is forced to live in isolation, unable to interact with people. To put it simply, the anime is quite dramatic, but not in a negative way, just a bit persistent during the first few episodes.

What caught my attention the most ... was the world’s lore. There is a clear division between white witches, seen as “good,” and black witches, like the protagonist, who are feared, discriminated against, and hunted. This contrast is a strong positive point and made me genuinely curious to learn more about this universe.

The animation is decent, nothing outstanding, but it does its job well. The voice acting is also good and fits the characters nicely, helping with immersion. I still don’t have a fully formed opinion about the anime, but I plan to come back and update this review in the future.

And if you’re wondering why the boy on the cover looks much younger than her, don’t worry, there is an explanation for that within the story.

Champignon no Majo initially delivers exactly what its synopsis promises. The first two episodes establish a clear tone and direction, creating an engaging experience that feels confident in its storytelling. However, shortly after this introduction, an event occurs that significantly shifts the course of the series. This change cannot be discussed without spoilers, but it alters the narrative in a way that slightly weakens the overall impact of the story.

Visually, the anime stands out in a very positive way. The art style is charming and distinctive, making use of intentionally blurred white areas to evoke the feeling of a story being told, which complements the ... atmosphere well. Both the opening and ending themes are particularly strong, with the opening being especially memorable and effective in setting the mood.

The characters are another highlight, as they are generally interesting and well-presented. While the direction the plot takes after the initial episodes is not especially appealing, the series is still ongoing, making it difficult to draw a definitive conclusion at this point.

Overall, Champignon no Majo remains an enjoyable watch. Despite reservations about its narrative shift, it offers strong artistic presentation and appealing characters, and there is still room for the series to regain the momentum established in its opening episodes.
