Why do we like Isekai stories so much?
Anime Relations:
Overlord
In our modern world, all you have to do is browse the web for a bit and you will see the range of talent that exists out there. Statistically an average joe like me and maybe you doesn't fall into the high end of that range. The ease as well as speed of information combined with social media has made it so that the web is full of the highlights of other's endeavors. It's no secret that this makes many question their self worth.
When we read a story about how someone is sucked into another world and all of a sudden their common knowledge is godlike and they are praised for being able to build a water pump or having a understanding of basic mathematics, we long for that praise and acceptance from others. Something that many of us do not find in mundane life with our average skills and knowledge.
We read Isekai stories to immerse ourselves in another world, one where we could possibly make a difference. And that idea is why we have fallen in love with the genre.

In my opinion, the world we live in compels us to do things we do not want to maintain our way of living, not that I think it is wrong, I am in favor of capitalism, but we know that to have what we want we must work to achieve but many times we end up sacrificing things for this, I'm not talking about anything emotional because I'm not that kind of person myself, if I want something I work and I get it, it's not bad, but it wouldn't be much more easy to skip the whole difficult part and get what you want right away? I think we've been looking for this kind of genre to get away from reality, but escape from this kind of world we live in. It may seem silly to think so but who would not want to go to a world that you are sure can get what you want from the beginning, if you say no, you will only be a hypocrite, not that I find myself a hypocrite wrong, I prefer a hypocrite than a politically correct person. Coming back to the point, in Japan their society is much more rigid than ours, so the number of works on an escape to a perfect reality is not so abnormal. I think you already understood my point. Now, good night, I'm going to sleep. |
