I've started tagging the anime in my list. It's going to be a long task, but I think I can have fun doing it. I may need to explain some of my tags and reasonings though.

I'll tag using Genre like most people. If a series has elements of action, adventure or mystery, you'll see that listed.

I'll also tag by setting when it's appropriate. For example series like Digimon Adventure and Tenkuu no Escaflowne happen in alternate worlds. Most series happen in Japan, but some happen in Historic Japan, or an alternate historic Japan. There are also series that take place in future Japan, with a subset of post apocalyptic Japan. I find these kinds of details interesting and they can often be more useful than such broad tags as genre.

Another tag I'll be using has to do with the age of the characters. Age often ties in to whether a show is a shoujo or a seinen type of anime, but then again, characters can be anywhere from middle school age to college age in shoujo, so I think age of the characters can help you figure out if you might be in the mood for it. That's why I use tags like "elementary school." I think this will also allow for an interesting analysis of the elements that pop up across different shows with the same age of characters.

I'll also tag by decade (especially in long running shows) and year of release. This is mostly for determining animation similarities. 1980s anime have a distinct look compared to anime from the 2000s for example. I'll also tag by a few of my favorite composers, mostly for my own interest.

Now we come to my tags that might be a bit more confusing. I'll be tagging series based on their overall color palate. I realize this can be very subjective but I'll try to keep it mostly to three or four tags: bright palate, for high saturation series that often show a wide variety. natural palate, for series that feel close to natural lighting and aren't as super saturated as those under bright palate. dark palate for series that tend to use lots of blacks, blues, greys and other lower intensity colors. pastel palate for shows. Some of these shows may go to lighter colors in day scenes but the overall ambiance will be darker tones. Once in a while the tag extreme palate may also show up, I'll reserve this for experimental anime that have little or no reference to real, natural colors.

The other tag that may be confusing is view tags. I believe that lots of anime have a specific time of day that fits the mood of the show. The themes and color palate of the show are usually the main factors that lead to this, but not always. View at night means I feel the series is best watched in the dark. Serial Experiments Lain for example just does not have the same effect when watched during the day. So I'll be using "view at night", "view at day", "view with rain" for series that really suit a rainy day, and then "view anytime" for series that I feel are equally effective day or night.

So that's an introduction to my tagging style.
