Akuma no Riddle - Chapter 23
Anime Relations: Akuma no Riddle
-The following is not necessarily a review, more a conglomeration of thoughts and feelings - I feel that individual chapters/episodes are hard to review independently, since they contribute to a greater storyline.-
So, first off, Otoya being on the cover was quite the surprise. I'm kind of disappointed she didn't show up in the chapter after that, but overall I doubt that the ousted characters will be brought back.
Ugh, Hitsugi and Shiena are both so cute in the beginning. I'm a huge fan of Hitsugi/Chitaru, and so they fall pretty high on my list of characters, but part of me empathizes with Shiena for being bullied so badly she resorted to killing.
I'm really excited for Hitsugi's attempt on Haru. I feel like there's been quite a lot of build up in the past chapters with it, and this time we actually see her confirm the reward with Nio, so it's bound to happen soon. I'm hoping that we get to figure out the whole Angel Trumpet side story beforehand, though, because I feel like it was totally brushed over in the anime, and I feel like it has the potential to be even more dramatic and painful when Chitaru finds out, mostly because we've seen more of them both.
Aw, Shiena has doubts when she's talking to Haru and laying out her card. I really liked that we get to see such a human side to her, like we do with Haruki and Chitaru. She's just a lonely girl who did what she had to to get taken in by the only people who would have her. I think that maybe, given time, she would have backed out of killing Haru altogether.
I think the Haru/Hitsugi switch was a little rough, and I'm still a bit confused by it. But geeze, Hitsugi is just so darn cute. And ooh, what is Datura? I love that she can be so adorable and so menacing at the same time - it's one of the reasons I like her so much.
And then Shiena calls her out on lying to Chitaru about her identity and talks about how good Chitaru is. I found it interesting that she considered Chitaru to be on the same side as Haru (basically, a decent human being), while Shiena's doubts show that she is probably on that side as well, or at least on the fence between the two. And that's the sort of self-doubt that comes with being bullied for so long. I thought it was very telling of her character in that way.
AND THE NEXT PAGE. Ugh, Hitsugi confesses her love for Chitaru (although the way she phrases it makes it sound as though she doesn't/can't really know what love is). Either way, it made me all smiley because they're so lovely. And then she has these soft eyes as she's saying it, but simultaneously shoving the gun through her bear. I thought that was really well done, as well as Shiena's face of surprise and realization in the next panel as she gets hit.
And she's down! I don't know whether Hitsugi killed her or just poisoned her a little, but it made me sad to see her go. And although I thought it was awesome that little Hitsugi is protecting her Chitaru (even if it's in a fucked up, unnecessary way, especially since they're not really together, the feeling is there). And the difference in her expression, ah. I just love her character.
Although I have to say, I didn't foresee Shiena's feelings for Chitaru. I can kind of see it looking back through this chapter, but I wouldn't have caught on otherwise. (I definitely thought Shiena was just using Chitaru to bait Hitsugi, rather than actually being concerned about her well-being.) I might look back through the last couple chapters and see if that is actually something I should have caught on to or whether it was just kind of shoved in there at the last moment.
And then it's over! I won't lie, I felt kind of jipped with only 9 pages. This is potentially also because all of this has been covered in the anime (though Shiena's emotions and Hitsugi's reason for killing/wounding her are new). I feel like this is going to become pretty come now, though, just because they can get away with it due to it's recently popularity. Also no Tokaku waaaah.
Still, I can't wait for next month to see how/if the Chitaru/Hitsugi storyline plays out.
