I've only finished 50 pre-2000's anime, and that's including shorts, OVAs and Movies, which make most of it.
I was surprised, then, when people told me that was a lot, because I really didn't feel that way.

When trying to think why, I guess I just compare myself with people who watch a lot of older anime and think they're "the norm".
Have you ever felt something similar?

I finished over 100 of them, and even that isn't much.

I don't really compare myself in that regard. There's people out there who've seen more anime than me. What matters is that as far as anime from back then go, I've watched everything I've been interested in. Systematically. And as far as anime from right about now go, I am watching everything that interests me, too.

There was a time when I was kinda at a loss, though, back in 2015 or so. It was a time when I've seen every anime in existence that I found interesting and there was nothing to watch next. Those were bleak days and I kinda had to pivot to manga for a bit and also slow down my consumption. (And no, MAL doesn't have my full anime list. I've dropped way more anime than I completed.)

As for anime from before the year 2000 that I've actually completed, the number is around 250. Though, when not limiting it to completed anime the number is over 1000.

Not regarding old anime titles but titels watched as a whole, i have completed over 700 and just think of those with 1000+, those people are crazy and i see myself as a "small fish". But when i compare myself with other random people, who often have a few hundred at most, im not that small of a fish.

50 pre-2000s anime is a decent amount. A lot of people don't realize we are basically drowning in anime right now, so much slop gets released that you basically have to be a NEET to keep up with it all. Back then, far fewer anime were released.

"Is there always a bigger fish in anime?"

On the sea analogy...the biggest creatures in the ocean are whales and they feed on phytoplankton and zooplankton, not smaller fish. It's inefficient to chase for such. so instead they simply filter tons of water...that's if you want to be really big.

Point is - it's your choice to hunt for tastier fish and stay fit or just farming huge sections of the ocean.
Yeah, there are also orcas, narwhals, big sharks, big squids ect, who are not that immense, but definitely are apex predators.

So, there isn't ultimate size for an anime fan, you just need to find your own niche in the "food chain" depending of your personal qualities.
How about being an anime barracuda? Nobody likes those guys, but they are eating good.

I guess so, I don't feel like I've watched that much anime, but most people I've met in real life tell me otherwise. I'm just so used to seeing people with lists in the 1000s on here I suppose.

@alshu You're thinking of baleen whales. Sperm whales, orca whales, and beluga whales all eat fish.

My father was a huge Otaku from the 70s and early 80s, back when we were living in Japan. He consumed Anime that most modern Users today would think of as wildly obscure. These are titles that weren’t just niche, but practically mythological to even the likes of a User like you, if you are actually ever given the privilege at some point to consume them at all in your lifetime. Stuff that aired once, never got a re-release, and has no official subs, no Blu-ray, not even a decent VHS rip floating around online. Most of it isn’t even remotely accessible anymore, whether legally or through piracy and torrents. The MAL database probably doesn’t even list half of them because they are just unknown to anyone outside of not only Japan but to the broader modern fandom within Japan itself.

The average person has probably seen fewer than a handful of older titles from before their time, and even fewer dig beyond what’s already been remastered, licensed, or served up by the algorithm. So trying to compare yourself to someone else when it comes to consuming media in this aspect, especially Anime, is fucking pointless. lol

Does it matter? They used to make slop in the past too, there was just less of it.

It did get me thinking though, if I was going to tell someone what I think they'd be missing out on from pre-2000 by not watching things on my list.... how many things would that really be? It definitely wouldn't be the whole list...

You will never run out of anime to watch. There is no "shortage" of anime to watch.

Nobody watching hundreds and hundreds of anime titles is "the norm" so comparing yourself in some search of normalcy is folly in the first place. There are no fish in this scenario. Watching something just to add to your watch count in some sort of mindless search for validation would be quite pathetic though.

Were you watching anime in the 90's? If not, then watching 50 titles from that decade is unusual. If you're watching 50 titles without having a particular interest in retro anime from that time, then that is exceptionally unusual. I hope you're enjoying the titles you're watching.
