Horrible, evil characters sanitized by their fandom?

Years ago, I remember I was looking for fanart of Shoujo Tsubaki on Pixiv when I realized there was a trend among japanese artists of romantically shipping Midori with the Mummy Man, even though she is a victim to him (and to every other member of the circus) in the original work. I didn't understand japanese at the time but I realized by the tone of the works that the things Midori went through at the hands of this other character were being downplayed, probably because of how aesthetically interesting he was to draw.

This week I was getting into the fandom of Ryuji Masuda's works and I realized kind of the same stuff: there seems to be a focus in fan works of exploiting the perceived cuteness of the characters (particularly Popee) while downplaying that they're all kind of mean spirited to each other and even sociopathic in the original material, even if it is for the sake of comedy in this case.

There are probably far more popular examples of this, like Griffith. But what are other examples of this, (in)famous or not?

I don't know if this is 'sanitized', many tend to like horrible characters from fiction and even real life for different reasons.

Popee is oddly cute with all his childish naughtiness and his cute pajamas :V

@Zarutaku I really need to read Made on Abyss because of this guy since I've seen him being described as even worse than Griffith.

Most villains from Dragon Ball Z end up becoming faux 'good guys' in application, and as a result the fanbase tends to go along with it.

Lucy from Elfen Lied is the only one I can think of. I end up rooting for the villain a lot of the time though; I wanted Light to win, I wanted Lelouch to win, etc.

it's been 20 years and we still get L apologists who refuse to call him out for being a murderer and a corrupt individual overall.

Vegeta, i mean the guy was an evil man. He blew up a whole village of Namekians that never got revived, blew up a whole planet of innocent bug people, had some of the most brutal kills in the series and was even part of the attack that killed many of their friends (Granted they mostly died by Nappa's hand but still)

and then everyone was cool with this when he knocked up their friend, Bulma.

Well i guess it's true, women can't resist an alpha male
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

@Subarctic-Forest

Lelouch is an antihero like ALucard, not a villain.

That's funny. Because from all of Berserk's cast, Guts is by far the most romanticized and sanitized from the bunch, on the basis that he is "the struggler". Pure victim complex.
"Chimp in state of nature never jerks off, but in captivity he does, wat does this mean? In state of nature he’s too busy, to put plainly. He is concerned with mastering space: solving problem of life in and under trees, mastering what tools he can, mastering social relations in the jockeying for power and status. Deprived of this drive to development and self-increase he devolves to pointless masturbation, in captivity, where he senses he is in owned space and therefore the futility of all his efforts and all his actions."

@TheBlockernator His ego also causes millions of deaths, directly and indirectly, during the Cell and Majin Buu sagas.

I always felt like Toriyama was just forced by his editors to keep him around because of popularity but he didn't plan on him to be fully redeemable for all of his evil actions during the story, at least until the end of the manga where he plays a vital role in the plan to save the Earth from Majin Buu. Current perception of Vegeta as a loving husband and father seems to be more based on how Toei and Toyotaro characterized him on Super (which they probably did for fanservice anyway).

If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

@Rissenicus If we go that way then we could call Casca the real victim in all of Berserk, as she was taken advantage of by both the men that she loved and cared about

@rbp_pbr2 Not the japanese humanizing fictional soldiers involved in abhorrent actions as a subtle way to ask the world for forgiveness on real world issues.

@awesomeoppy I'd say yes, absolutely. She is a monster hiding amongst her prey. LOL

@oooo3333 You should burn for this! Did the demons count too?! I read the Manga & the eclipse is even worse than what the TV Show(s) give us. No wonder her mind is broken.
