As we all know, in the Top Anime list, each season of an anime is listed as a separate entry.

This often allows a single strong franchise to occupy multiple top positions, while shorter, one-season masterpieces are pushed down the rankings.

It would be nice to introduce a separate list that consolidates all seasons of an anime into a single entry by averaging their ratings.
This would better reflect the overall quality of an anime as a complete experience rather than fragmenting it by season.

Naturally, this raises the question of how to handle seasons of Alternate Timeline, Reboot, Re-imagining, and Spin-Offs.
I believe they should be separate entries, as they are distinct works rather than direct continuations.

In short, all seasons belonging to the same canonical storyline would be grouped into one entry with an averaged rating.

Please do share your thoughts or alternative approaches to this idea.

I strongly agree with this idea. Manga are rated per series, not per volume. Why is anime being treated differently?

It would be cool to have a separate "Top 1000 Franchise" list under the anime tab on the upper left. Maybe you could sort it by either average rating (the good sort) and also average users (the lesser of sorts lol). You could have a quick overview of all their series and release dates. Would be useful to quickly and easily see a franchise's chronological order there with ratings. Very interesting imo

Because this is obtuse and overwhelming tbh, if I just search Naruto I get this, and it's 20 pages that is all unrelated anime.. wtf happened here?

If there is some franchise tab somewhere here I dont know of it but it's not where I would think (the Anime tab).

As for the top anime itself and more on topic, lots of people think in terms of seasons. It's always been like that. Especially with filler and anime that descend into terrible individual seasons later. And these users aren't as vocal about this as users who think in terms of franchises. To the former, it make sense to have things as they are now. There are entire filler "seasons" that would tank a good franchise's rating, like:
https://xss.now.cc/anime/3652/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Rei
But this REALLY shouldn't be considered season 3 even though it says it in the synonyms.. I feel like MAL would count it lol.

That makes me think consolidated seasons would be kinda meh for some anime. And there's debate on what goes in. But I guess if you had a Top Anime by Series sort of tab or filter, a nice list highlighting the seasons and their ratings, that'd be cool.

@anen0me i mean, manga that get a new name get a new series, so it's not quite as simple. anime is pretty annoying, though. this would be a good change overall

I agree. The top anime list feels kind of useless as a way to gauge potential new shows to watch when you have 5 different entries for Gintama or Attack on Titan there...
