Okay. I had put off this anime for years. Maybe even a decade... maybe even a little more than a decade. I'm not really sure where I got the first DVD, but I somehow had it at least in my early high school days. So... early 2000's. I'll just go ahead and say at least 2008. I remember back then that I kinda sorta didn't like this anime. I... kinda thought it was trash... or at least trashy. "This is just an excuse to have some girl surrounded by hot men while giving them some kinda questionable intimate connection". I felt super uncomfortable when they did the whole stare before preting(sp?) thing. I thought it was friggen weird because like yo she's 16-- and even with Japan legal age yadda yadda it seemed odd and the dudes were drawn a lot more mature so I wasn't sure what the age difference was (they're all 16 apparently except for the kids).
So that was me as an actual kid watching. Nowadays, I've been around the block and seen much worse anime. One thing I didn't appreciate as a kid was that Himeno is actually kinda a little gremlin at first. I think I interpreted it as the creators trying to make her more of a cool girl when I was a kid, but actually as I watch again, she's not too bad. She's a 16 year old. I don't think I was even 16 when I first started this, so I couldn't quite relate or get it. Now that I've pretty much been there, done that, I think I can appreciate Himeno a little more. A LITTLE more. She's still not great, but I do appreciate that she didn't just roll into things right away. Actually, one of my favorite parts was when Hayate came in to check on her and she said no in a kinda vulnerable way... but then gremlin screeched no again and punched him away. Like thank you for at least not being a melting heroine 24/7 and honestly that scene did actually make me laugh. Her interactions with her dad were silly sometimes too. It wasn't explored too much, but there's this kinda idea of Himeno staying as she is despite coming into money, and it kinda helped paint her as kinda tomboyish and down to earth-- which her outfits kinda helped drive home. One could argue that her most notable Pretear outfit is the one that she dons when linked to Hayate. Sure, it's easy to just shrug it off as "elements, duh", but we're talkin' magical girls; most (not all-- Sailor Moon for example) choose pink as a main color scheme. While I think they didn't want to gamble too much and made her hair pink-ish at least (it can be pink or orange I guess), they gave her both "girly" and "boyish" designs when preting. I think this helped give her this air of someone who's able to get rough but also has a maiden's heart in the end. Things I really didn't care about as a kid unless it was spelled out for me, to be honest.
Despite being okay with Himeno at first, I knew she would eventually deteriorate into the usual. And she pretty much did... but at least it happened later than I expected.
Despite my appreciation for Himeno to a point, I rose a brow at the whole Sasame turn. And then things just became messy. And honestly... I feel like we didn't learn a lot about these characters. Man, we have seven dudes and they're all pretty bland. We really don't get much-- and then there's Yayoi who just... honestly didn't play much of a role in anything, so it was kinda useless to have her around. I mean Mayune didn't do much for the story either, but it's whatever. I think I also wasn't sure what to think about the whiplash of the comedic elements to the... whatever was happening with the dangers of yadda yadda demon larvae yadda yadda princess of disaster. I think the balance was fine at first, but when you try to pull of an ending like this after the giant mayo bottle, the balding servant, and so on, seeing the kiss and revival brings out more of a chortle than anything. And I think Sasame's whole thing brought about that turning point in a weird way. I mean, I don't want to say it was completely out of nowhere, but the transition could have been better...
Anyway... eh. Not absolutely terrible, but definitely not a fan. |
