I'm not exactly in favor of removing all donghua and aeni from here, but I definitely agree that it should be tagged separately, we should have options to search for them specifically and/or exclude them from searches/top/lists...
And it's definitely garbage that gets botted by the CCP. The one you posted is actually tame in terms of obvious botting. It looks like Frieren's stats (which are definitly botted by obsessive fanboys, but that's another topic)

That's what obviously botted stats look like:
https://xss.now.cc/anime/60420/Cang_Yuan_Tu_2nd_Season/stats
https://xss.now.cc/anime/59662/Long_Zu_II__Daowangzhe_Zhi_Tong/stats
https://xss.now.cc/anime/54437/Lian_Qi_Shi_Wan_Nian/stats
https://xss.now.cc/anime/61748/Douluo_Dalu__Jiandao_Chen_Xin/stats

Yes, that's every donghua ONA released this season minus one (at least those that have enough votes to have stats). It's tiring seeing all that 3d slop nobody watches clog the top ONA every season just because China wants to copy South Korea's success with K-pop and manwha/aeni.

The best thing would be to have two spin-offs, MyAeniList and MyDonghuaList, with a common forum under MyAnimeList and options to search all databases simultaneously, but dedicated subforums like Aeni Discussions and Donghua Discussions.

People can't get enough of Donghua this is why they dominate rankings on MAL. If MAL removes them it will be a financial suicide.

That's just delusional. Outside of the two-three really big shows/year, it's all sub 10k viewers, which can probably be reduced to sub 2-3K once you remove all the bots. The truth is, donghua has to cling to anime databases because it'd instantly die if it wasn't leeching of anime sites' userbases.

"donghua is carrying anime and its databases" lmao, what a take.

more like millions, Donghua is on anime database sites for a reason, it makes money. In recent years it is surpassing anime in popularity in China. If Japan do not step up their game I got bad news...
@Megistus7
You know what else makes money? Disney. Why haven't I seen you demanding the addition of all Disney animation to the MAL database?

Nope. I've said it before on numerous occasions and I'll reiterate it again here, but while I have a number of pretty firm and intractable disagreements with certain policies on the website including the way some anime are labeled (genre tags), certain forum rules, and so on, this is not one of them. I'm basically fine with MAL's treatment of other non-Japanese northeast Asian anime as anime (and it would be likewise fine even if it were to be expanded further to encompass all of East Asia like Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese, etc. animated media to the extent it exists). And have adopted its usage and incorporated it into my own outlook on what constitutes anime.

Because East Asia is a unique and distinct region of the world (as all are in their own ways to different extents) with a lot of shared cross-cultural influence. The Japanese animation industry has heavily influenced the Chinese and Korean industries and there is huge market share overlap. They've outsourced so much there and are increasingly even collaborating on more and more officially-designated joint productions. Geographically, culturally, historically, this is a region which is very much a world unto itself and the development and advancement of animated film and television as an artform in different parts of it has been closely linked.

And that's true in a way which it simply isn't and cannot be compared to animated works from elsewhere in Asia (South Asia, West Asia/Middle East) or to Europe or North America or anywhere else.

I watch a Chinese or Korean anime (seen very few Korean though due to availability issues for what I most wish to watch) and I feel the same as when I watch a Japanese anime - that I am indeed watching anime, which is something I only feel and receive from East Asian animation and not any Western or other cartoon. Even the art styles are basically shared and have morphed as one (or really, the Japanese heavily determined the evolution of the others as they were by far the largest and most popular/prominent and successful first).

And another reason why I'll always oppose calls for its removal is even more simple and straightfoward than that: It harms absolutely no one whatsoever in any way, shape, or form by allowing it to continue to remain here and be viewed, logged, sorted, treated, discovered, and interacted with as anime by those like myself who wish to consider and include it as such. But removing it does cause that harm. There are people who never would have discovered certain series if they weren't here present on the website. Whereas how is someone who dislikes them, dislikes their inclusion here, and doesn't watch them being harmed by their inclusion in any meaningful tangible way? No one can answer that question with any kind of meaningful answer. At least I've never to date seen anyone answer it with anything logical or coherent. So it remains a silly position.

Just don't watch or list yourself what others choose to. To me it's spiritually akin to and the same line of reasoning which those who oppose lolis and loli fanservice or any other subtype of anime are following when they call for their removal from websites (be it database websites, streaming platforms, or any others). Just don't watch or otherwise deal with what you don't like and aren't interested in and let everyone else do whatever they want. It's petty to try to micromanage this for others because like most issues, it's obviously a completely subjective matter on which they'll never ever be any universal agreement.

you know that a lot of anime are outsourced to chinese studios and often times a lot of animators working on these anime are chinese french taiwanese etc., the same goes with directors also, so perhaphs many of the anime both old and modern should be removed too with that mentality.

I disagree, on the basis that Japan's animation industry was most heavily influenced by America's. If we're going to allow other animations under the reasoning that they resemble Japan's, I would sooner allow the country that occupied Japan in the 20th century and later went on to make Avatar and Teen Titans.

It wouldn't be a problem if they were tagged and you could filter these works out (notice how you never see threads about manhwa, only people asking for more to be added). It goes against the spirit of the database to mass-delete things. Every other anime database includes these works, and sometimes more. Some Chinese and Japanese animation databases even have Western animation, which nobody seem to have an issue with.

If MAL genuinely wanted to capitalize on Users who are so obsessed with the Donghua shit, no matter how derivative or low-effort it might be, they could easily spin off a sister site entirely dedicated to it. That way, it would be far easier to measure how "influential" Chinese Donghua crap actually is outside of China when it’s no longer being lumped in with Japanese Anime or propped up as a tool of soft power by obvious User bots, CCP agents, or just dumbass Users on here doing the work for the CCP without the benefits of getting some shit like social credits for it. lol

I love all animation and donghua is as much a part of it as any other. We’re already deprived of amazing animation on this site like Arcane, all The Witcher animes, Love Death and Robots, countless outstanding USA stories and many many others because some snobbish weebs and clueless kids put it in their heads that only Japan makes genuine animation (when it was the West who came up with the concept), viewers talk trash without knowing what they say as most never even try anything different, and now this?
If this goes ahead, me and many many others will leave and join someone more true to the spirit of animation. It used to be a free spirit thing and is now overrun with mainstream elements and mainstream kids who think they’re rebels when they just look like everyone else and didn’t know what animation was when we’d already been following before it became “trending”. So cool your witch hunting urges and the cancelling needs instead of ruining it for everyone else.

Either purge all non-JP titles or quit gatekeeping. Pick a struggle

@NightmareWare anime is not a Japanese word nor even Southern or Southeastern Asian. Animé comes from, and is short for “animated” films which is what we used to call them before someone came up with the hyped term. As in “images given life, animated, given animistic (living) traits”. Animated = animation = animé. If there is a Japanese word for it it’s not even close and if it is, that’s because they took it from this one.

@Lucifrost no one is. I watched. But the beauty of MAL for many people is that we can keep track of most of our animation here. Anything from the West had been looked down on and kept out but we can keep all our tracking of Chinese, Japanese and Korean animation in one place. I can live with the rest. But contrary to many people, many others don’t want an app for every little thing. Having all under one roof is a big advantage and if that is removed there’s plenty of good tracker sites and apps that aren’t prejudiced against it.

Bruh, you just started the wrong debate. I know some donghua are trash, but there are still good ones like To Be Hero and DLOIMK so they should stay. There’s nothing wrong with keeping them.

If you really wanna remove stuff, focus on doujinshi that’s a whole different issue. But removing donghua ? Not happening.

Or better yet, instead of removing things, why not push to add more non-Japanese anime to MAL ? Start a poll for stuff like Shadow Slave, TBATE (LN adaptations), or even Devil May Cry anime. Break the guidelines if you have to, but don’t come for donghua just because some are bad
@Asuna_Shiraishi Why remove doujinshi? That doesn't make sense at all.
