To me? It's arguably the biggest part.

God knows basically changed my world in 2006

If a show has a really good and fitting OP/ED I will usually add +1 to its rating.

However, if a show has a really good soundtrack and the show doesn't live up to it, then that will wind me up no end, AnoHana's soundtrack is wasted on a show as cowardly as AnoHana is.

Quite important, but not quite essential.

I listen to anime music on Youtube. Most of these songs are good.

Not that essential. It's just a nice-to-have.

The main issue is that I just don't care about J-pop/J-rock/typical anisong vibes. If anything, I find them mildly annoying, music-wise. I think I'm slowly warming up to them over the years...

I've only recently realized that a song can sometimes add a lot of goodwill towards an anime. Witch Watch's amazing OP basically carried me through 10 episodes, when there was only around 2 episodes worth of material that I enjoyed.

Outside of watching, I occasionally give anisongs a listen when YouTube recommends them to me. Other than that, I don't engage with them.

I'm in a similar boat, perseii---I found anisong/J-pop annoying and grating during my impressionable, formative years, when I wasn't engaging with anime very much at all. Even now, decades later, I still find the music mildly distasteful. Just not my thing.

As I've gotten more familiar with anime, though, I do occasionally find an OP or ED song really fun. I'm frequently surprised by how much I can enjoy them, maybe not on an emotional level but on a sort of vibes-matching, craftsmanship appreciation for how an anisong contributes to the overall work of an anime.

I'm like that too, and that's a great way to put it. Especially the visuals, they almost become part of the song and I can't separate the two.

I wouldn't've batted an eye if I first came across most of these songs on some playlist or radio. It's how the song enhances the anime (and vice versa) that gets me interested and excited. Bonus points if the song goes out of its way to incorporate uncommon genres and sounds to make the anime stand out. Dandadan OP1 was so weird and alien when I first heard it, but it definitely stuck in my memory and I've grown to like it over the season.

Anime music is easy to find on Youtube. Here is an example of such a song.

Very important seemingly.
There are exceptions, but usually the OPs/EDs I rated highly also happen to be in the shows I rated highly. 😂

@perseii YES same for me on all counts. The visuals working together with the music is what I love the most. It'd be similarly... uncommon? difficult? for me to fully notice/appreciate any of these anisongs if I just heard the song playing over the radio or something.

I also felt similarly about Dandadan's OP. Not my kind of music, but it fit SO well with that show.

It is an important part of anime for me. Anime songs also reflect the spirit of the anime.

If we speak only about OP/ED it is not that important to me but if a show is bad and I know I'm gonna rate it low, than if it has an actually nice song than I am giving a 1 score higher to not be that harsh [unless I have my specific reason to give a very harsh rating].

For Ost -> Also doesn't matter but if I notice a nice song, let's say during a fight, which makes the scene better than I am gonna remember it and it will affect my rating.

Exception:
If it's a music anime, than I will be considering the songs, after all it is focused on music so I will be focusing on it.

Here's 2 examples:

Part of the package removing it won't necessarily kill my intrest in anime but will dampen it lot for sure.

Pretty much indispensible, honestly. Even the best animation can be dragged down by bad music (and vice-versa.) It's especially nice when the music is performed by one or more of the VA's from the anime (in-character or not; you'd be surprised how often the latter happens.)
