How would you feel if you were now forced to do the Ma'nene ritual?

The Ma'nene ritual is a centuries-old Torajan tradition in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, occurring every 3 years, where families exhume, clean, and dress mummified ancestors in new clothes.

Let's retake the same scenario from my starter Pokémon thread and say you passed through a dimensional rift in your sleep and ended up in a different reality, but this time it has nothing to do with Pokémon. Rather, you are now in a reality where the Ma'nene ritual is spread worldwide and mandatory. You now have to dig up your family tomb and clean corpses so that you can dress them up like dolls and expose them for everyone to see. How comfortable would you be to live in such a world? (For anyone going to say that their ancestors got incinerated or something... Well, in that dimension, they weren't.)

How resistant they are? How many of them do I really have to do? I have 4 gramps and it grows exponentially bigger going up. Supposing I am not destroying them and it is just enough for my laziness not win over the tradition (I rebelled against christmas trees at 6), and that I can repeat clothes (because come on changing looks every 3 years). Veredict: They are getting some nice cosplays.

I guess if it was a tradition I would be willing to do it, I would just have my eyes closed the entire time. XD

Short answer:
I can’t answer for myself had I grown up within different customs.

Long answer:
However, if I were to retain my current understanding, I would find the thought disturbing. Death is a finality entrusted entirely to the divine, without further human intervention. The bodies of the dead are treated with reverence not for their own sake, but for the persons they once were and in view of the resurrection to come. [1]

While I don’t doubt that the Indonesian communities involved act with sincere and respectful intentions, from my perspective, letting go of ancestors expresses a deeper humility: an acceptance that what follows no longer belongs to us, but to the divine.

[1] If a peer of mine wishes to delve deeper, Aquinas discusses burial and the assistance offered by the living to the dead (Supplementum, q. 71, a. 2), the treatment of the body reflects reverence for the person and hope in the resurrection, rather than ongoing human control.

@Absurdo_N In that culture, it's supposed to be about taking care of the dead. You give them new clothes, you repair their coffins if need be. It's meant to be an expression of love and respect. But sure, it does seem disrespectful if you believe the dead are meant to be laid to their final rest so they can rest in peace.

Actually touching a dead body aside, Id's take issue with putting clothes on a corpse, especially if they're new. I don't care how old the tradition is or if it's my own blood relative. That just seems wasteful.

Wait I'm actually so in love with this. I know my grandpa could f up a good tux if we gave him the chance! I only ever saw him in ratty tshirts covered in sawdust lol.

Also in my experience, dead bodies are cleaner than live ones!
can't yuck my yum

I'd rather not have to see anyone in a decayed state. Might be different if there were pristinely preserved and looking fairly healthy in death. I don't want to have to be around death more

Well in the cultural context of it being custom and an act of reverence I'd do it. Mummies aren't sticky and over time smell less so it wouldn't be the grossest thing

"Hey, mister, grab the dog - it's made off with Grandpa's leg!"

I really hope they don't do this year-round. I've got nothing against dead bodies - on the contrary, actually. But the smells are a whole different matter.

I remember the first time I ever went to an anatomy theater with my class: the surgeon lifted the peritoneum a bit - I happily leaned in to get a closer look, took one careless breath - and the next thing I know, I'm already outside, someone is rubbing my cheeks and sticking smelling salts under my nose. Idiots! The ammonia almost knocked me out a second time, haha.

Anyway, it's a perfectly fine ritual - just without me. I would rather spend that week somewhere on the shore, where a fresh sea breeze keeps evil spirits away from my drink.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Oh yeah I read about this ritual before. Um if it was the done thing and in a way expected then I suppose I would? (So long as they're not cremated) can't be much weirder than having your mother's ashes still in your home I guess? 🫠

"In today's episode of things fleurbleue found 6 years later than other people and decided to make a thread about it."

I'm pretty sure your next thread is going to be about the North Sentinel island, or something, as if it is breaking news.

It's not a revelation, it's a rerun. We don't need any reruns.

I don't think I'd be mentally or emotionally prepared to see the wasted away body of a deceased family member.

@149597871 Another thing you sadly presumed wrong. If you want my actual thought process, it went with getting reminded of Les Stroud's existence, which in turn reminded me of an episode he did about honoring the dead, which in turn reminded me of another documentary about the Ma'nene. But I'm not even sure if you care, you probably only are jumping at anything you can to be a grumbler.
