Well basically the title, does the movie explain itself or do you need to know a little of this gigantic lore?

Yes. At least what I assume is the basic stuff—like the different groups, their members (and preferably the main points of each one’s story to understand their personalities, actions, relationships, and dynamics with the rest of the characters that appear, as well as the fantasy elements that exist in this world and what purpose they serve), and what a 'Sekai' is—because the movie just assumes you already know all that and doesn’t explain much, at least as far as I remember.

I don’t know if that sounds like too much, but I watched half of a 20-minute video before going into the theater, and that alone helped me understand things pretty well. That said, I did feel like finishing the video would’ve helped me enjoy it even more. Plus, it’s probably full of little details that only actual players of the game and long-time Vocaloid fans will pick up on

I watched it without prior knowledge of Project Sekai and didn't feel like I missed anything major. I still had a very good experience watching it.

I just watched the movie, and while I don’t think it’ll effect anyone’s enjoyment, it would have been nice to know a little about the project.

No, if you're attentive.

- Concept's of Sekai's aren't explained, but you can more or less get an understanding of what they are from what you see.
- Entire cast revolves around ProSeka chars + vocaloid variants so ~30 chars, no movie original main characters aside from Miku

It's a fine-alright-pretty good-not bad movie if you don't know anything about ProSeka, and it's a pretty good, good, great movie if you've played it. Plot and cast are a bit too big for a 100 min runtime movie to introduce someone new to proseka, but not bad as a one time standalone thing.

I would say no. I went into it with minimal understanding beyond there being 5 groups from ProSekai and that Sekai is an alternate world.
