A great deal of anime characters are "fantasy races" where they're not from anywhere. Even in cases with real world setting, they don't really look like the nationality they're supposed to represent

| @Auron One major aspect contributing towards the whole mukokuseki thing is the stylized art style of most anime having their Japanese characters lacking the trademark epicanthic folds on their upper eyelids like most ethnic Japanese in real life have. One exception that comes to mind is Attack on Titan, where the two "Asian"-equivalent characters, Lady Azumabito and Mrs. Ackermann, are drawn with them. |
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows. |

Here's an American character: Here are Japanese characters from the same show: I guess they're all American since their features are not much different? It's absolutely fine to take certain proxies like skin color and have your interpretation in the absence of canon answers. In Naruto, Hyuuga clan is clearly a different ethnicity than the Uchiha clan, even though they have similarities. In this show, Noé's clan seems to be characterized by dark skin color and pale hair (he isn't the only one with it), that's enough for me to say there's an ethnic demarcation there. |
