You mentioned this before, and I find it really interesting. I've always thought of lying as a big no-no - as scum, because I'm usually afraid of being called out for it, as town because I don't want to mislead other townies (=when it turns out I lied, it's a big distraction and everyone would focus on me instead of scum).
But I like the idea of setting traps for scum... so I think I'm going to be bold and try this strategy sometime.

More than just simply tripping over such actions, being that bold in some things that you can do will also lead to reactions or other things that can show certain intentions/concerns that lead back to traits of either alignment.
Even if it's not all without failures, clearing town names is also of some use at times, if it gets late enough you can simply rely more on who has never actually shown themselves to be of a town state of mind :3
Edit: While it will vary depending on each player, being able to control the flow of whichever aspects of the game you're comfortable with to some extent can be a truly scary weapon.
