I still haven't figured out how to describe my taste in anime, so I'm gonna recommend some animes that MAL classifies as hidden gems, and that I absolutely loved:

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena: What initially drew me to Utena was the aesthetics, from seeing it on the MV for a lofi remix of a famous brazilian song (Tim Maia - Ela Partiu). It's always a very difficult story for me to describe, but let's give it a try.
I'd say Utena is about a girl that, while chasing a childhood memory, ends up stumbling into a secret society. This mystery element in the plot is what hooked me, and the complexity of the characters is what turned it into one my all time favorites (I've spend many sleepless nights thinking about the complexity of Himemiya Anthy).
I really enjoy how it plays with gender roles, even if in an outdated way. It made me turn eyes to other anime that inspired it, or that also plays with these concepts, such as The Rose of Versailles (which is getting a movie next year), Dear Brother and even newer stuff like Senpai is an Otokonoko (which has a completely different vibe from the other two, given it's slight comedic element).
If anyone has other recommendations similar to these I'd apreciate so much.
P.S.: The Utena movie, The Adolescence of Utena, is almost a remake of the anime, and in my opinion, is something to watch after watching the anime, if you enjoyed it.

  • Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!: Recently watched, and just as Haikyu makes people want to play volleyball, this made me want to start drawing and studying it again.
This anime is about a group of girls that want to make anime, simple as that, but it dives into some technical stuff about anime making and animation in general, while also trying to emulate some problems studios come by, but in a school environment.
It can definetly throw people off on the technical stuff, but is essentially an anime for those that are interested in seeing a simplified version of the animation making process.

  • From Up on Poppy Hill: First or second Ghibli movie I've watched that doesn't have fantastical elements to it. Just a heartwarming story, and a Ghibli movie that I don't hear much about.
Also, makes me less angry at Goro Miyazaki for the disaster of Tales from Earthsea.

@YuukiTheFlash It's not listed on your anime list so I assumed that, lol. My bad!
@AnimeDxn

Hello! I've looked at your profile and can sort of grasp that some of the animes you're into are mystery, romance, and thriller. You seem to have watched most of the good ones already haha! This might be a long shot, but maybe you should try watching "Erased"? The story is based on mystery, thriller, and friendship + courage. Also, the anime contains abuse, so if that's something that bothers you, please do not watch it.

Here's the link if you want to check it out.

My favorite anime is black clover and i recommend this to all of you

this anime has a story of a child's adventure who doesn't have magic skills, but he insists on becoming a wizard king, the story of this anime is also interesting with many supporting character backgrounds.

@chibiandreea I might not be even qualified to suggest having one of the lowest numbers of anime watched in this thread.

Anyway, I hope you give Majo no Tabitabi a try, if you haven't read or watched it. It's one of my favorites, and while it looks like an innocent adventure-type, coming-of-age journey, there are always deeper, sometimes darker meaning behind Elaina's encounters which might interest you.

@matemasu Your taste in anime is quite diverse. Let me recommend Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, that is if you are okay with romcom, drama and just a teeny tiny bit of fanservice.
@Ksoro after looking at your profile, it seems like you like anime with female characters such as Bocchi the Rock!, and Lycoris Recoil. I'll recommend you Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku since it revolves around interesting female characters.

@symbolsanime Hmmm depends on the if it's a high school or adult cast 🤔

High school cast? Given (Of course hahaha Kaji Akihiko is my baby and I adore his story!!)

Adult cast? Twittering Birds Never Fly (When I started the series, I preferred the side couple. But after reading the available manga volumes, my favorites have changed to Yashiro and Doumeki!!)

Runners-up: Sasaki and Miyano, Tadaima, Okaeri, Stranger by the Shore

And yourself?
@victooooorious I really like kaji as well! as for me, i loved nezumi from no. 6, hua from heaven offical's blessing, langa from sk8 the infinity, and mingon as well. i also love saski from sasaki to miyano, those are some of my fav bl/bl characters!

Hey!

I noticed the thread’s gotten a bit crowded, so I figured it’d be better if I switched things up and started from the most recent posts.

While I may not have the experience of some pros here, I’d still like to throw in a few recommendations that might suit your taste. Based on your profile, it seems like you’re drawn to works with a vintage feel, while also capturing the spirit of exploration and a rich level of world-building—think One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, or the whimsical charm of Spirited Away.

Here are my picks:

- Trigun (1998): Set in a dystopian, wild-west-inspired world, this series masterfully blends sharp humor, explosive action, and deep philosophical undertones.
- Outlaw Star (1998): If you loved Cowboy Bebop, you'll certainly have a good time watching this. A space-faring adventure packed with daring heists, quirky characters, and a treasure hunt that spans the galaxy.
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984): I noticed it was already on your Plan-to-Watch List. That said, I believe this work needs no further introduction—a timeless masterpiece crafted by the legendary Miyazaki.

These picks are brimming with nostalgia and depth, perfect for someone chasing that classic anime magic.

Hope you enjoy them! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

Undead Unluck

Gachiakuta/Real Trash/Legit Garbage

First has a female main lead while number 2 is made by a woman, the spiritual successor of Atsushi Ookubo (Soul Eater, Fire Force).

@RayalitySaga Based on your avatar and profile page I got the idea you like some spooky anime (or at least recently). I'm not that into spooky anime, but one that popped in my head immediately is Another. It is tagged as horror and it certainly has some interesting spooky visuals, but the story can get silly at times. Think is it sort of a classic because of its reputation!

While writing that another anime popped in my head, The Perfect Insider. It is a mystery anime and I feel like the woman featured in the mystery has some spooky vibes too that might match what you've seen in horror anime. She also works with computers, just like you!

Hope they are something you would like to check out ^^.
@Dido16 Omg yes spot on haha!!! I DO love horror and gothic anime and stories so you're 100% correct there ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Another has been on my PTW list for the longest time ever, but I think I'll finally watch it now that you mentioned it huehuehue! The Perfect Insider on the other hand is new to me, so I'll definitely keep that title in mind!!! Tysm for the recs ~!

I read on your profile that you're into yaoi/bl titles so let me recommend these; Mignon is a Korean bl animated series revolving around vampires! Sadly, it's very short, but it's VERY well-animated and the main male couple has one of the best chemistries I've seen in a bl! Warning tho!!! The last few episodes are VERY NSFW so do beware of that if you're not comfortable with it!

Another yaoi you should totally check out is Twilight Out of Focus!!! Granted, I'm still watching this one myself but based on what I've heard about it from a lot of people, it's REALLY good!!! And the visuals are stunning as well <3!

And as a bonus, since I saw that you also enjoy classic shoujo/romance anime, you should totally check out The Rose of Versailles and Revolutionary Girl Utena!!! They're old but gold ✨ (also worth mentioning that The Rose of Versailles will be getting a movie in 2025 too if you wanna be up-to-date with that ;3c)

Hope you enjoy ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈♡)

@txaboydaniel sorry for the lack of detail, wrote this at 2 a.m., half asleep, and I always have a hard time describing Utena, which made me give up on describing all the anime.
I'll be editing my answer to give more detail, so if anyone comes to re-read this thread, they'll have a context for my recomemendations.

About Nausicaä, it's actually one of my favorites, probably made the mistake of putting it in my Plan-to-Watch.

Trigun has been recommended on more than one occasion, described to me as having Cowboy Bebop vibes, definetly gonna give it a try one day. But Outlaw Star is one I had never heard of, gonna look it up, so thanks for the recommendations.

@RayalitySaga Yay I'm glad I gleaned as much from your profile ^^.

Glad you like the recommondations! Both are relatively short anime (only 11 or 12 episodes), so they can be nice to watch over a weekend :D. The opening of The Perfect Insider is a banger, the visuals of those are also amazing, I think something different from what you usually see.

Also thank you very much for your recommondations! I do love me some vampires (first anime was Vampire Knight, saw you've also seen it, matches your taste in gothic anime :P) and while I haven't watched Korean animated series before, I'll be willing to give it a shot! Also thanks for the warning, I don't have a particular aversion for NSFW but it is sometimes a bit uncomfortable to see it animated while reading it is just fine haha.

I'm very surprised by Twilight Out of Focus, it is only from last season?? I try to keep up with what is airing (at least knowing about it), but I haven't heard about this before. I like the key visuals, and I also like the manga covers, just to discover I've put it on my plan to read XD. Now I certainly have to check it out!

I've heard about those classic shoujo/romance anime, and up till now I've been held back by the fact that they look dated. Nothing wrong with that, but it has been a bit of a barrier for me. However, now it has been recommended I'll consider it seriously! Time to try some classics!

A general recommendation I'd like to make is Black Butler, in particular Book of Circus. I feel like Black Butler took a massive step forward overall with this season, and if you haven't watched previous seasons I would still say to start here, since they do a great job catching you up to speed anyways. It's not a very long watch, but everything from the choreography to the art to the music is done amazingly, and the characters are very unique. My absolute favorite scene, not to get into actual details, is the big fight towards the last couple episodes

Honestly, for someone who felt they struggled to describe it, I think you did a great job capturing the essence of the series. Your explanation really gave me a clear picture of what it is about, so I’d say you nailed it! ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Oh, and for the record, whoever recommended you Trigun definitely didn't lie. Exactly like Cowboy Bebop, it really is a work ahead of its time—it's what they usually say, old but gold!
(It's also worth mentioning that the series received a reboot conducted by Studio Orange during last year's summer season. So if you're interested, it's definitely worth a try.)

Hope you have fun watching them! :^)

Looking at your favs, I would recommend either a 1980s classic like Bubblegum Crisis and/or Top wo Nerae! or Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. You can watch Suzumiya in any episode order, but for me the broadcast one is more fun since it makes you feel better the chaos of the story.

Hi!

I noticed that you have Noa from Patlabor as your avatar, I'd like to suggest for you Dominion Tank Police. Both anime feature police officers and main heroines are quite similar both in design and character. While Noa loves her mecha, Leona treats in the same vein her tank. There is one catch, Tank Police's squad poses quite a hazard to anything within the same post code as they are.

@erstad Based on your profile and your taste, I think you might like Kanata no Astra. It's a mix of Sci-Fi and survival.

I'll make a general recommendation for Pompo: The Cinéphile. It's a brisk 90-minute watch that boasts some of the finest scene transitions I've encountered in any film, not to mention the exceptional shot composition, particularly during the editing process.

@Slick10000 I'm glad to see a fellow pompo enjoyer! I love that movie, it's my top recommendation.

I'd also recommend Cider no You ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru. I enjoyed this movie a lot and i find the art style is really nice.

does anyone have any recommendations for anime about fairies? ive read a lot of manga about them, but beyond that one season of SAO, The Ancient Magus Bride, and magical girl anime in general im a little lost on good recs. ദ്ദി(ㅠᯅㅠ) bonus points for if they're mean fairies, like folklore style!!

and i'd recommend Angel Beats and Full Moon wo Sagashite to anyone who likes character-driven sad stories with singing and a 'time on earth is limited' underlying theme!
@tizzytinks I was gonna either reccomend Sugar Apple Fairy Tale or Fairy Gone but then I saw that you already have both on your plan to watch list ^^" Other than those the only fairy related anime that comes to my mind is WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us? which is about beings called Leprechauns (not sure if that still counts as fairies). The plot is more war focused from what I can remember, but since you recommended Angel Beats, I figured this one might be something for you, since it also has a sad story (no singing tho).
