What is the most annoying thing someone can do when discussing anime?

Is it the most annoying to you that someone will dismiss everything you say without any argument? Or when people have no original opinions and will agree with everything (or maybe they have no backbone and can never defend their opinions)? Or is it other thing?

This thread is a challenge. Is the most annoying thing: Bragging about being a nonce, acting superior due to useless consumer capitalist metrics like number of shows watched or merch purchased, still being a dumbass that can't analyze media worth shit despite claiming to have watched 1000 shows, using "tourist" unironically?

I'd say the nonce* thing. The number one reason anime fans have a bad reputation.

@DarkFirefly72 *It's UK English slang for paedophile.

@MelodyOfMemory I actually don't know what nonce means lol. English isn't my first language.

Probably namedropping really obscure, universally-unwatched anime titles into general anime conversations without giving explanation or context, just to show off that they've watched something that few others have seen. It's just irritating because you know they're not doing it for the benefit of discussion and often, they do it at the expense of a much more obvious and helpful example.

What I truthfully find one of the most irksome and all too commonplace are those who immediately - it almost doesn't matter the series but especially concerning more "dramatic" series - romantic and psychological dramas, thrillers, mysteries, etc. with any form of sad or tragic, controversial and divisive, convoluted and unclear, memorable and iconic, twist, or cliffhanger-type ending, launch immediately into discussing the ending of the series in question as if it's the only point worthy of discussion, even with and in front of those who haven't seen the whole series yet and that is known and apparent - like the "Wait until you get to that ending though!" *wink wink, nudge nudge* style of commentary.

I just find it disgustingly rude and that those folks have zero regard. It can be ignorance and overexcitement/overzealousness leading to a lack of awareness of the impact of one's word or it can stem more from arrogance and apathy or a mixture of the two.

If you were blown away by a particular ending, then great for you. But there's no reason to act like a gaudy cheap carnival barker about it. Let people discover the series and the mysteries and treasures contained with it at their own pace. Let others have an organic first-time experience with it, as presumably you yourself or others once had and cherished. I see those types of comments and the inner Dr. Hannibal Lecter comes out in me. It's just a form of total disregard and rudeness I find "unspeakably ugly" and cannot countenance.

And on basically equal ground in the sense of occupying a similar place of dirt poor standing in my eyes are the novel/light novel/manga/manhua/manhwa/video game/visual novel readers and/or players who come on to every anime discussion sub-forum knowing full well it's populated in sizable percentage by those only watching the anime and outright spoil things left and right or try to work spoilers into discussions somehow someway even in a cloaked and subdued form.

I'll be honest in that for myself and my own sake I don't even care all that much about spoilers if it's not a series I'm seriously psychologically and emotionally invested in to a significant extent (and there I've always had the sense to avoid any and all discussion of them online while in the midst of them because, lamentably, you can't trust anyone for a second to be responsible or respectful), which is like less than 5% of everything I've watched, especially in terms of seasonals from the past few years. But I think it's just the sheer unnecessary nature of the behavior and utter gall of those engaging in it which I find so loathesome.

You go into an individual anime series' episode discussion thread topic, clear rules are automatically posted, with the relevant one to the matter posted on top with DO NOT in bold font and capital letters - "DO NOT discuss the source material beyond this episode. If you want to discuss future events or theories, please use separate threads." and then people just swagger in and do whatever the hell they want. I equate them with people who would just come into somebody's house or a public store and just defecate all over the floor as they walk, because they think they're entitled.

People who think they're better because they like or dislike something super popular.
When people can't stop calling everything that isn't their favorite show mid.
When people with no media literacy voice their braindead takes like they're facts.
And the whole ''goonerslob'' and anti lolisho discussion like... how about you just shut the fuck up and move on with your life. It's not that hard. Touch grass.

When someone blatantly spoils major events from a series or source material of a series I'm planning to watch but haven't yet started. Doesn't apply to all genres, I won't bat an eye if it's a romcom or other comedy, but for most other series, it's very annoying. Once I've started watching an anime however, I do my best to avoid discussions around it to avoid spoilers.

Also when people dismiss entire genres and themes as "mid", "shit" and "slop". Battle Shounen is the most common victim, followed by Isekai.

@WatchTillTandava UGHH THIS!!! Like I don't even care about being spoilered personally most of the time, I'm not going to stop watching something I like because some idiot tried to ruin it for me... but like, it feels so disrespectful and it's so annoying.

The most annoying thing is what some people I know IRL tend to do when I make a mistake of talking to them about anime: randomly shit on your taste, like really shit on, not calmly discuss or express like or dislike, THEN also bring a question of gender into it.

Like "wooooooahhhhh you haven't seen X??? WTF" yeah? You haven't seen half of the shit on my list either and I'm not acting shocked about it.
And "omfgggggg you have X a 9/10 that's hilarious" Yes I happened to enjoy something that's not considered objectively good, why are we making a big deal out of it? I haven't mentioned it once or tried to shill it to anyone btw.
And last but not least, "you're a woman so your opinion doesn't count" - which is a real thing said to me recently.

Where do I even find these people? The answer is work. Working with people several years younger than me who got into anime like a decade after I did, but who also feel superior because I'm just some girl with shit taste.
I don't think anything that happens in the forums can compare to the shit I get from them for the most random reasons possible.

Thanks for reading the rant lmao

@Briekimchi Probably the worst part about this is when they act like it is weird that you haven't seen it. Like bro, 5 people have watched this shit. I'm sorry I don't know about the most random 2005 title ever.

And the worst part is that they act like it isn't common sense or they don't care. I do hate a lot people that spoil things left and right. I'd say that the source material readers are worse than the first ones you mentioned because they should probably be greateful in the first place that a piece of fiction they really love is getting and adaptation and then they actively make the experience worse for the people that are trying to get into that IP.

I do agree with you but I also get where people are coming from. I love isekai as much as the next person but nowadays it is indeed filled with pure slop and even the great ones a lot of the time have weird shit in them (like pedophilia). And something similar to a lesser degree can be said about shonen.

I guess that is the case because most people that consume anime are not from Japan and/or they don't speak japanese, so most real information has to be translated to them and that makes it a lot more likely to create misinformation in the first place. That and also the fact that for some reason people in the anime community are more comfortable wiith simply believing shit they read on a TikTok or smth like that.

Some people are just plainly idiotic. Sorry for that happening to you. Serbia is as far as I know (I may be wrong lol) a pretty right wing conservative country (like a lot from that area) so that probably makes it worse.

Anything involving age, as it never leads to anything productive.

Fanservice thread is unavoidable. But some complaints are valid.

X anime is too long and those who like it just don't want to acknowledge they wasted their time.

This may be a controversial thing to say but, the term "tourist" seems to be based in some reality. If I think about where most of the irritation comes from, it's because of people who don't really care about the artform, still acts like they are otaku, and brings in some utter bullshit. An extreme case seems to be "Anime doesn't has to strictly Japanese". Like wtf is that even supposed to mean, you are telling me "an animation project doesn't has to be japanese in order to be called japanese animation aka anime". But if I bring that up people will call me "narrowminded purist", "gatekeeper" and whatnot.

And then there are those who can't stop bitching about sexual themes. I don't care what you think about it, can't you just ignore it and move on with your own shit. There are grown-ass adults who feel "traumatized" because they learn about the mere existence of Boku no Pico. Apparently putting "R18" on it isn't enough and they want it purged from existence.

I usually start to zone out and roll my eyes once omebody brings up stuff like: 'guYs, ThERe iS an aGeNDa'.

This usually translates to: 'Anime X contains depictions of topics (even if they are barely relevant) which do not fit into my narrow view on the world and are therefore wrong and should be excluded.' And hen they proceed o whine about how the influence of the 'evil, greedy (and woke) western (usually they mean just the US) influence' ruins their anime.

This is, of course, done in bad faith and completly disregards that the writer put in their own ideas into the work. It's literary the point of a fictional story to put oneself into the shoes of a different person and not to reinforce our own position.

Usually using the word 'tourist' is another ick for me. This term is thrown around left, right and center and lost it's meaning. It's often used as a veil to dismiss any kind of criticism (legitimate or not) or used when a person enjoys anime in the 'incorrect' way.

@DarkFirefly72 I also agree with that, these genres are indeed oversaturated, but some people have a stigma against the name of these genres itself. They don't care about the content and criticising based on that, but only about which genre/theme the show belongs to, which is why I used the word "entire". Funny part is, most of these people haven't even watched those shows they dismiss as "slop". I might sound hypocritical here since I've also almost "discarded" the Avant Garde genre after watching NGE, but pretty much everyone agrees that all anime of this genre are "weird" and confusing without exceptions since these anime tend to be experimental in nature, and I don't like confusing things. But Battle Shounen and Isekai can't be generalized like that.

Probably when mentioning you like anime to someone who doesn't (you don't always know they don't iike it) and they say it's all Japanese perv stuff. It really isn't, it depends on what you watch. Not long ago I watched Planetes and I feel this is something non-anime fans could also like.

rage baiting. especially irl when you're into an anime you really like and someone gives a very believable hot take just to mess with you and you'd instinctively react because you thought it was a very healthy discussion but turns out they were just fucking with you. makes you look like an idiot for actually being passionate about something.

The shipping police, or maybe I should say the gay police, because you never see people behave as aggressively when it comes to heterosexual ships

As soon as someone dares to have a gay ship, the gay police get triggered and start crying,"NOOOO they are not lesbians goddamnt stop saying lesbians existence,,,Waaaa WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

They often demand you stop having those ships, and when you refuse, insults, threats, and homophobic tears will follow

Political Slander deserves its own post, idgaf whatever your agenda is, if wanna discuss politics instead of anime go to twitter, wokes or bigots are just as insufferable, they are like barking dogs because after all the shouting no one changes, except the fandom is now more toxic.

Look at the payment processor censorship topic intead of unanimously opposing it, some where saying this was the left's or the righ's fault as if that mattered somehow, they don't have the right to censor and they shouldn't that's it

It often comes to people complaining about fanservice like their fucking allergic to and giving misinformation or not elaborating on what they watch, more often because they didn't understand the show or they just feel like it because they want to sound smarter. Also calling stuff mid or peak should be another point but sadly I follow this trend because I'm very stupid too.

@SoumyaUkil73 Yeah, the criticism itself holds merit, but not the people that actually make it lol.

Few people put me into boxes thinking that I only enjoy anime for the Husbandos, which is well... simply not true and it is annoying, but I don't come across this often.

Someone, who uploads no anime files, cannot be considered a real anime fan IMO.

"So bad it's good"
"I can't take this anime seriously"
"WTF did I just watch?"
"This gives me *insert anime name* vibes"
"Commencing three episode rule"
"Fanservice is ruining this show for me"

There are a lot more of these "gems", but I can't remember all of them at once.

rage baiting. especially irl when you're into an anime you really like and someone gives a very believable hot take just to mess with you and you'd instinctively react because you thought it was a very healthy discussion but turns out they were just fucking with you. makes you look like an idiot for actually being passionate about something.

makes me not want to talk to them anymore and won't give them a serious discussion.

Related to this (not really to the question I made for the post but whatever) probably the single thing I hate the most when I meet someone new is if I find out they are not passionate about anything, No passionate about games, sports, TV shows, movies, watching streamers, work, studying, traveling or anything for that matter. Like they just exist, what are you living for at that point? (Important to point out that I'm not saying they should cease to exist or smth like that, it is just a way of living that I can't even fathom doing myself)

The shipping police
I'm fine with people shipping whoever they like, I think something that kind of annoys me (not that much tbf) is when people act like thhose ships are canon or somehow based on reality (not exclusive to gay ships of course, any type of ship).

You will understand once you lack the energy to be passionate, sooner or later it happens to most people.

To be fair this sometimes happen. Of course is not that the anime gets good all of a sudden, but it is so bad that its bad writing and surrealism becomes comical. So I do understand that sentiment.

I mean, some people are just not willing to give shows a chance except for a couple of eps, so at least that is a way of forcing them to watch 3 of them. I simply drop a show when I feel like it, although I rarely drop shows to begin with.

It is not a deal breaker for me, but sometimes it can get a little annoying. If I want to watch nudity or straight up soft porn I would just search that in Google. I want a good story.
