Texhnolyze isn't horror but is a reaaaly dark and heavy series, with many horrorific moments.
One for those so called "élites", it's a love or hate series, that's for sure.
On the same category I'd also count Gilgamesh, a series almost forgotten now

Haibane Renmei is really good series (I'd reccomend you to watch other works from the same creators, like Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain and NieA Under 7).
Shiki has became one of my favorite anime thanks to the great build up, the music, the ending and also the curious character design.

If you liked Shiki you could try "To the New World". They are different but people who liked one of them tends to also like the other one so see if it can interest you

Well, in these days I've mostly read (both manga and novels), if you are looking something good I'd like to reccomend you to read "I had that same dream again" and other works of the same author.
I've also watched the anime adaptation of "Look Back" and I also think is a good watch (definitely 58 minutes used well).
There are a lot things I'd like to read and watch but time is just not enough (also I don't like the idea of shutting myself at home all day).

You on the other hand, found anything interesting?

Yeah, unfortunately the original OVA's sold poorly so the series was cancelled after just 2 episodes.
As for the remake/reboot The Legacy, it had an interesting world building and I think it would have been remembered more as a series if it had been a little longer than just 6 episodes.
One other thing I really liked was the character design, really well drawn characters in my opinion with many little details in clothes, hair styles, etc.

I forgot to tell you but one of the most iconic pirate/space adventure anime series out there is "Space Adventure Cobra".
It's a very '80s show but in a good way.
You can find both the manga (18 volumes) and the animated projects (in chronological order):
The Movie (more or like 90 minutes long)
A pilot episode
The first series (31 episodes)
- All the ones mentioned till now were directed by Osamu Dezaki -
The second series, formed by:
The "Psycho Gun" OVA's (4 episodes)
The "Time Drive" OVA's (2 episodes)
And "The Animation"/ 3rd season (13 episodes)

I'm sorry to know you didn't like Mouretsu Pirates but, as I said, I hadn't watched it before so I didn't know more than what I told you before.
At least you liked the music and watched something different than usual.
As for Elemental Gelade, the anime has a filler episode (the 5th) and a different ending from the manga (which was still ongoing) but the overall consensus is pretty positive (maybe even because of nostalgia)
I'd say you could try to watch the anime and, if you like it enough, you could try to read the manga for the full story.

If you are interested in Sky pirates, you could try Elemental Gelade.
It has been in my list for a couple of years and I think I'll read/watch it sooner or later.
