1. Chapter Black. Sensui is probably the peak YYH protag, and Yusuke sort of being the Spirit Detective protege done right to contrast Sensui’s pessimistic attitude worked well. I liked how distinct Sensui’s goons abilities were, it wasn’t just strong guy with attacks. So they had to figure out methods for defeating the enemies. I wish they would have taken down the Kekkai barrier and had a full fledged war against the demon world, but I guess Togashi wasn’t that ambitious.
2. Dark Tournament Saga. I like how the main cast was pushed to their limits against opponents. People like to scream ass pull or whatever or whatever when chatters get power ups in the series, but Kurama’s yoko form is the best introduction to an alternate power in anime history. Toguro fighting to become the most powerful man in the world, later seeing his errors and deciding to suffer with eternal torment via limbo. I hate Genkai’s death being retconned.
3. Spirit Detective’s Arc/Yusuke’s Ordeal. Yusuke receives good character development in the first episode alone, not imposing his will and doing what he can because he can, and instead sacrifices his life for a child who made a mistake. I think it ties into him seeing the errors of his ways when he realized it’s not a dog eat dog world. That the people around him he interacts with everyday actually loves him and shows sympathy. Botan giving him his spirit gun and detective items, and the small little missions, I like the slice of life feel it had in the early episodes. Would’ve been cool if the entire YYH cast had their daily life shown.
4. The Three Kings Saga. Three different factions fighting to overtake the demon world, and exploring conflict among political landscape was kind of too complicated for me. I think it could’ve been fleshed out more if it was expanded via dozens more episodes, but sadly the last arcs seemed rushed by Togashi. I remember Hiei getting shit more backstory during it.
5. Finale. I think he was going to go the route of Dark Tournament again and have everyone battle for rule, but he kind of skipped this by having Yusuke knocked unconscious so he missed the entire tournament. It seemed lackluster and a boring conclusion. None of the characters shown got to display their powers or capabilities in combat. I wish it was skipped entirely and they had done a full fledged war. Of course he didn’t want Yusuke to tske the villain route and rule over the demo world, succeeding his father. People like a happy ending.
