There is a lot of series now in general with any anime bro now lol, whenever you do get to the anime one day though...make sure to start on Episode 3(1 and 2 are filler for manga readers back in 2006), also remember that Movie 1 is a remake of the Benizakura arc(1st serious arc), Movie 2 was made after Episode 265 but before 266, and make sure to watch those 2 movies, OVAS, and Skipped Comedy manga chapters BEFORE episode 300(because episode is the beginning of the end...this is the point where there is 4 Final Serious arcs back to back to back to back...this is the Climax of the Story)

The Humor in Gintama is more on it's own Gags rather than references(but there is a good amount of that to), and don't forget that Gintama isn't just a comedy series, there is Semi-serious and Serious episodes/arcs throughout the series
