You can also refer to the premise of the Minority Report (2002) movie as to why the automation part of your idea is deemed unacceptable by most of those who responded to your thread.

The multi-select feature has been suggested several times before. It would allow you to select one or many entries in your list to perform multiple actions concurrently such as deletions, episode increments, moving entries from one section to another, etc.
The actual tracking of current episode numbers (the latest episode that has aired so far) has been suggested a few times. MAL doesn't do that and likely never will because this isn't something that can ever be fully automated due to a *number of reasons. That this feature doesn't even exist is truly the biggest hindrance to your idea.
Hypothetically, if those two features become available with the addition of an "update to the latest episode" button/link, then that will probably be enough to fulfill your wish for a timesaver.

Here I thought someone was suggesting a counter for the latest episode. At the moment, we can estimate this from the discussions, but that doesn't work for obscure stuff which usually doesn't get any traffic at all.

I'm sorry, but your suggestion is flawed. The automation might seem like a viable shortcut if you're only watching a few titles, but the progress number is meant to represent what you have actually viewed, not what has recently aired. If you miss your anime sessions by a few weeks or months due to sickness, vacation, or whatever real life disruption, then you'd have to revert everything in your watching section which can prove to be a bigger hassle than normal updating if you have more than a dozen entries like some of us do.
