Anime Rankings My rankings are not meant to be taken seriously. I often enjoy watching what I would consider poorly-made and bland anime. My rankings exist to make recommendations and to keep anime I watched organized. As much as I would like to give many anime a [10 / 10] to boost its MAL score, I need some consistency in the way I rank certain anime.
I am not analytical. I do not like defining what was right or wrong with an anime, but rather how I felt because it's more fun that way. It's boring saying, "One-dimensional characters that bring about pointless exposition," or "Rich in content and thoroughly explores its themes," when I could just say, "You're better off watching paint dry."
__________
Anime in the [7 / 10] - [10 / 10] range are what should be the standard. I can totally see why you may consider some of these masterpieces or why they resonated with you.
Anime in the [4 / 10] - [6 / 10] range are at worst barely watchable and at best enjoyable. I wish there was more substance in various departments such as characters, story, animation, etc.
Anime in the [1 / 10] - [3 / 10] range are lackluster. They're not worth your time unless you want to laugh at how bad it is or writhe from cringe because you're a masochist.
10 / 10 | A WORK OF ART (WORK IN PROGRESS)
9 / 10 | HIGH REGARD (WORK IN PROGRESS) Blown away like a nuke landing on your backyard.
8 / 10 | GREAT / IMMERSION POINT (WORK IN PROGRESS) The immersion point. The moment I feel immersed in a show, it belongs here, no questions asked.
7 / 10 | GOOD / THOROUGH ENJOYMENT (WORK IN PROGRESS) I feel comfortable recommending these anime to people. In other words, this is the benchmark for recommendations, not the minimum.
6 / 10 | DECENT / FINE (WORK IN PROGRESS) These anime are serviceable, enjoyable, and have a few things going for it. Typically, execution of tropes, comedy, and twists and whatnot are okay at best.
5 / 10 | AVERAGE / GENERIC / WASTED POTENTIAL This is the baseline for recommendations. For every good thing the anime offers, there's an equally bad force counteracting it. I want to stress that anime here are neither good or bad, but especially not bad because some may interpret a [5 / 10] as "bad." I enjoyed these anime to some extent. On the one side, some anime here add nothing new to the table and basically copy what has been done a billion-gazillion times but with their own often not-so-compelling characters. Something that's been used over and over but with a slight twist to it (a gimmick) is not originality, it's bland but with a different taste to it. On the other side, some anime here to have a few really strong/unique things going for it and at the same time have all the other qualities or fundamentals essentially neglected. I call these wasted potential.
4 / 10 | MEDIOCRE / AWFUL EXECUTION (WORK IN PROGRESS) Entirely misses the target, but at least the attempt was made. I wouldn't call it a bad anime just yet, but it's walking a fine line that borders it.
3 / 10 | BAD / TRASH The literal definition of the word "bad." Anybody that convinces themselves these anime are living in a different plane of existence, and I applaud them for achieving such levels of delusion. These anime have very few redeeming qualities, but chances are these redeeming qualities still suck. The reason I can't rate them any lower is that they are not outright worthless [2 / 10], let alone offensive [1 / 10].
2 / 10 | WORTHLESS / A WASTE OF TIME Imagine letting your five-year-old sibling write your application letter to Harvard. Do they even have a chance? Why waste precious time, money and passion on such a boring, cringey, and illogical work of trash? Characters, story, setting, animation, themes, conflict, structure, flow, emotions, sound, pacing--all these things that make an animated film an animated film are practically non-existent. It only fails to be offensive. Don't bother.
1 / 10 | OFFENSIVE A disgrace to film since its inception. Why was this even greenlit? How can it bring about such a polarized world to harmonize solely to dogpile on it? Whoever made this needs to be wiped off the planet. We don't need . . No, I won't put your favorite shows here. Your favorite anime is most likely a ton of other people's favorite anime, so by default it can't offend the collective human race. Watching grass grow is several magnitudes better in terms of plot, characters, themes, relevancy, and entertainment value. Read the comments about the anime--that is the content you're looking for.
