Just a Russian polyglot that lives in China.
I consider myself to possess profound lexical sophistication, and I harbor an affinity for polyphonic narratives. My reviews are always based on a metric-driven approach. A note on my ratings and methodology: several of the titles listed under my "Watched" section—particularly those lacking formal reviews—were either completed years ago or were evaluated without comprehensive commentary due to momentary indolence. Consequently, many series bearing a score of 7, 8, or 9 reflect a vague impression rather than an exact critical measure. My evaluation rubric, while metric-driven, is not uniformly calibrated. Certain categories are subject to rigorous scrutiny, while others may attain a perfect score by merely satisfying baseline criteria. I do, however, plan to conduct an exhaustive analysis of each evaluative category when time permits. For clarity, the scores presented on MyAnimeList are typically rounded down from a broader internal grading schema, which incorporates a variety of parameters—ranging from pacing and plot consistency to genre execution and conceptual innovation. I’m currently under taking a 24-episode rotation series featuring four series, which I’m calling Quadruple Frénésie Paradeigm. The structure is simple: once I complete a full rotation cycle—watching twenty-four episodes of each series—I increase the episode count per series by six for each new cycle. Each show will receive equal watch in the cycle of episodes. The lineup includes a rewatch of Attack on Titian, Fairy Tail (starting from episode 66), Naruto (continuing after season one), and My Hero Academia. My Hero is First, Naruto is second, AOT is third, and Fairy Tail is fourth. I'm going to be honest I wanted the opposite ordering. However, as I have completed Attack on Titan in full, it is officially retired from the rotation. The “Quadruple” in the name will remain for tradition’s sake, but the current roster consists of the remaining three series. While Quadruple Frénésie Paradeigm will be my primary focus, that doesn’t preclude me from watching other series concurrently. 只是住在中國的俄羅斯語多語者 中国に住んでいるロシア語のポリグロットです。 Просто русский полиглот, который живет в Китае. The Spectrum of Excellence: One-Ten 10 - A Timeless Masterpiece: This category is reserved for those rare works that captivate in a profound, almost ineffable way. These shows transcend the medium itself, evoking an emotional response that lingers long after the credits roll. They are the anime that, when you think back to them, you’re flooded with an appreciation for how skillfully they engage you—whether it’s through storytelling, animation, or thematic exploration. A "10" show feels essential, as if it’s a peak in your personal viewing experience, something that redefines what anime can be for you. 9 - Near-Perfection: These shows are nearly flawless in their execution, with a few minor, sometimes almost imperceptible, issues that prevent them from reaching absolute perfection. They might be slightly hindered by a character arc that didn’t quite land or a minor tonal inconsistency, but these are small blemishes in an otherwise outstanding experience. When you watch a "9" show, you're consistently impressed, and even if you pick apart small elements, the overall effect leaves you awestruck and satisfied. 8 - Outstanding and Above Expectations: These works stand out from the crowd, leaving a strong impression that elevates them beyond the typical anime fare. They may surprise you with their innovative approach or their exceptional level of craft, delivering a compelling and immersive experience. Though they might not quite achieve perfection, they excel in areas like storytelling, animation, or world-building, offering a rich viewing experience that stays with you in a positive way. They are the kind of anime you might enthusiastically recommend, knowing they’ll provide solid enjoyment. 7 - Strong and Enjoyable: Shows in this category are thoroughly enjoyable, with moments of genuine brilliance. While they might not reach the heights of the truly exceptional, they offer a satisfying experience that makes them worthwhile. You might not find them revolutionary, but they do a lot right. Whether it’s a lovable cast, a captivating plot, or a well-executed setting, they provide the kind of experience that you’re glad to have had, even if you don’t feel compelled to revisit them immediately. 6 - Competent but Unremarkable: These anime are entirely serviceable, doing what they set out to do with enough competence to keep you entertained for their duration. However, once the final episode ends, they tend to fade from your mind without much lasting impact. They don’t do anything particularly remarkable, but they don't make any glaring mistakes either. You watch them, enjoy them in the moment, and forget them—just another solid entry in the sea of anime. 5 - Mediocre at Best: These shows tend to hover in the middle ground, offering just enough to keep you watching, but not enough to make you feel invested. The characters may feel flat, the plot predictable, or the execution uneven, but they aren't outright offensive. They're fine for what they are, but you’ll likely forget them as soon as you finish. Watching them doesn’t evoke much excitement, but they don’t actively disappoint either— they simply exist. 4 - Disappointing: This tier belongs to anime that initially seemed promising but ultimately fail to meet expectations. Whether it’s due to poor pacing, unfulfilled plot potential, or lackluster character development, these shows leave you feeling let down. You may have hoped for something more, but instead, you're left with a series that starts strong only to falter in key moments. The excitement you had at the beginning gives way to frustration as the story weakens or the promise of something grand slips through your fingers. 3 - Below Average: These anime struggle to engage you on any meaningful level. They might have clunky pacing, lackluster animation, or an unconvincing plot that makes it difficult to invest in the characters or world. Watching them feels like a chore rather than a pleasure, and they tend to evoke more annoyance than enjoyment. By the time you reach the end, you're left wondering why you bothered in the first place. They might still appeal to completionists or fans of specific genres, but they don’t hold much appeal beyond that. 2 - Unnecessary: These shows leave you questioning their very existence. They may be poorly executed, confusing, or just bland in every way possible. It’s hard to find anything of value here, and the experience feels almost like a waste of time. There might be occasional flashes of something vaguely interesting, but these are quickly overshadowed by the sheer mediocrity or failure of the overall product. These are the shows you wish you could forget—and likely will—once they’re over. 1 - A Legend of Failure: Reserved for the anime that, in their complete and utter failure, become something almost entertaining in their own right. These are the shows so inept, so glaringly flawed, that they become a kind of spectacle. Perhaps the animation is laughably bad, the dialogue so awkward it’s comical, or the plot so incoherent that it becomes a "guilty pleasure" to watch. These are the series that you watch for the sheer audacity of their failings, and they often linger in your mind not because they’re good, but because they’re so bad that they’re impossible to forget. A "1" is an unforgettable mess, a fascinating disaster. Tiered Rubric with Gradient of Critical Elasticity (GCE) I use a personal rating system that assigns a “tier” to each category I score, which reflects how strict or lenient I am when judging that aspect of a show. The tiers are: Tier I — Forensic Scrutiny: Perfection is rare; deduct quickly for gaps in craft, logic, or execution. Tier II — Calibrated Appraisal: Balanced standards; minor blemishes tolerated if core goals land. Tier III — Permissive Margin: More generous; prioritize effect over exactness. Overall Rating: This category is not assigned a GCE tier, as it functions as a composite calculation rather than an independently judged metric. The score is derived by summing all category values (excluding Cringiness), then dividing by the total number of categories used to establish a weighted mean. The Cringiness score is processed through a penalty formula, and the resulting value is subtracted from the preliminary mean to generate the final, definitive Overall Rating. Overall Plot TI: The narrative unfolds with a clear rising action that builds momentum, culminating in a recognizable climax where central tensions peak, and concluding with a resolution that addresses the primary conflicts while leaving space for continuation. Transitional moments provide coherence between arcs, even if some rely on straightforward narrative bridges rather than intricate setup. Pacing TIII: The progression of events unfolds with a steady rhythm, alternating between moments of heightened intensity and slower intervals of reflection or exposition. The overall cadence provides the audience with both momentum and reprieve, sustaining engagement without overwhelming or stagnating. Plot Twist TII: Narrative inflections arise at junctures, subverting established trajectories while retaining structural plausibility. Such reversals recalibrate character relations and recontextualize prior developments, compelling the audience to reassess assumptions and deepening the interpretive resonance of the storyline. Plot Progression TIII: The storyline advances with discernible momentum, each sequence building logically upon its predecessor while orienting the narrative toward resolution. Developments unfold in a coherent trajectory, sustaining clarity and direction. Plot Consistency TII: The narrative preserves structural and causal coherence throughout, with character behaviors and events predominantly adhering to the framework established earlier. Occasional deviations or anomalies occur, yet they remain sufficiently integrated so as not to compromise the overarching continuity or logical progression of the storyline. Depth Precipitin TIII: The animation exhibits spatial consistency, with characters and objects preserving proportional integrity across consecutive scenes. Dimensional relationships remain stable, ensuring that visual scale and perspective are maintained throughout, which reinforces coherence within the animated environment. World Design TII: The setting is constructed with comprehensive internal logic, encompassing geography, culture, technology, and systems that interconnect to form a coherent environment. World Building TI/TII: The narrative expands upon the setting, revealing its intricacies and interconnections in greater detail. Cultural practices, environmental dynamics, and systemic structures are elaborated, providing a richer sense of depth and plausibility that situates characters and events within a fully realized world. Main Character TI: The protagonist is depicted with fully articulated motivations and agency, exhibiting discernible growth over the course of the narrative. Actions consistently reflect their established personality, values, and substantial moral obligations, with pivotal decisions driving the story forward while influencing surrounding characters and events. Side Characters TI/TII: These characters are designed to remain peripheral, with minimal narrative weight and limited screen presence. Their actions and development are generally inconsequential to the central plot, serving primarily to support context, atmosphere, or minor story beats without diverting focus from primary protagonists and key conflicts. Protagonists TII: This cohort consists of characters aligned with and orbiting the central protagonist, actively engaging in narrative progression. Their interactions and relational dynamics enrich the storyline, reinforcing the protagonist’s objectives while sustaining cohesive integration within the primary plot structure. Antagonist/s TII: This cadre functions as the principal source of narrative friction, imposing challenges that probe the protagonist’s capabilities, choices, and ethical convictions. Their motives and behaviors are intricately aligned with the story’s internal logic, sustaining a credible and compelling opposition that heightens tension and propels plot development. Character Designs TII: This criterion assesses the imaginative conception and visual articulation of all entities, including humanoids, creatures, and supplementary characters. Designs demonstrate originality while harmonizing with the established aesthetic of the world. Character Development TIII: Character evolution is rendered with measured depth, reflecting shifts in personality, perspective, or capabilities over the course of the narrative. These transformations are executed with coherence and maintain fidelity to the story’s internal logic. Notable Characters TIII: This category assesses characters who leave a durable imprint on my mind. A character is considered notable if their name, defining traits, or personality are readily retained, and if they demonstrate distinctive qualities or memorable moments that resonate. If three or more characters fulfill these conditions, the category is automatically conferred a 10/10. Animation TI: This category demands the highest scrutiny, evaluating the technical execution and aesthetic quality of all motion elements. Animations must maintain visual fidelity, with seamless transitions, dynamic staging, and expressive character motions that enhance the storytelling and immerse the viewer in the scene. Enjoyment/Entertainment Factor TIII: This category evaluates the overall engagement and enjoyment derived from the work. It considers how effectively the narrative, characters, visuals, and audio coalesce to captivate attention and evoke emotional or intellectual responses. Scoring reflects a balanced measure of immersion, entertainment value, and sustained interest over the course of the viewing experience. MC’s Morals/Ideals TII: The protagonist’s ethical framework and guiding principles are evaluated. The character’s decisions, actions, and development are assessed in light of their adherence to these values, and how consistently they manifest throughout the narrative. Backstories TII: Character histories are explored for depth and relevance, illustrating formative experiences and motivations that influence current behaviors and relationships. Emphasis is placed on clarity and seamless integration with the main narrative, enriching character development without detracting from core plot progression. Outline Ideas / Theme TII: Focus is placed on the central theme, demonstrating how core motifs and concepts are cohesively integrated into the narrative’s structure, guiding plot development and character arcs. Concept/s TII: The core concepts underpinning the narrative are examined for originality, coherence, and integration with the story’s structure. This includes evaluating how inventive or compelling the central ideas are, and how effectively they interact with character arcs, plot development, and thematic elements to create a cohesive and engaging narrative framework. Cringiness TIII: Cringiness evaluates the degree of awkwardness, forced humor, or melodramatic exaggeration within the work. Uniquely, a lower score in this category positively impacts the overall rating, reflecting how minimal tonal missteps or corny elements enhance narrative credibility and audience immersion. Voice Actors TII: The performance of voice actors is evaluated for emotional expressiveness, clarity, and alignment with character personalities. Consideration is given to how well vocal delivery enhances narrative immersion, conveys subtlety in emotion, and supports character development, while maintaining consistency throughout the work. Art Style TI/TII: The visual idiom is assessed for ingenuity, stylistic coherence, and its capacity to reinforce thematic and narrative elements. Evaluation encompasses composition, chromatic harmonization, textural application, and line articulation, as well as the manner in which the aesthetic amplifies worldbuilding, character delineation, and the overall narrative atmosphere. Music TIII: Musical composition and auditory design are assessed, encompassing background scores, thematic motifs, and ambient soundscapes. Given my usual lack of direct engagement with OST or CST, this category is frequently marked as N/A, with limited influence on overall evaluation. Conclusion TI/TII: The resolution of the narrative is assessed for its capacity to synthesize key plotlines, thematic elements, and character arcs into a coherent and satisfying closure. Evaluation considers how effectively the ending reinforces the story’s core messages, provides narrative closure without unnecessary contrivances, and leaves a lasting impression, whether through resolution, ambiguity, or anticipation of future developments. Lore TI: This encompasses historical context, mythos, cultural frameworks, and inter-character or inter-event connections that are never directly shown in the show. Complexity/Depth TI: Narrative structural intricacy and thematic sophistication are evaluated. Interwoven plotlines, layered character motivations, and the interplay of subtext, symbolism, and narrative foreshadowing are considered. Moral Obligation TIII: This category primarily pertains to the protagonist. A character is evaluated based on the consistency of their ethical framework from the story’s inception; deviations from established morality must be justified with comprehensive, well-reasoned narrative or psychological explanation. Power System TI: The mechanics and structure of the power system are evaluated for internal consistency, originality, and narrative integration. This includes limitations, scaling, rules of operation, and their logical consequences within the story. Abilities TII: Individual abilities are assessed for creativity, utility, and quantity. Genre Execution TIII: Consideration is given to how effectively it fulfills genre conventions, subverts expectations when appropriate, and balances familiarity with innovation. Season # / Movie # Overall Rating TIII: The overall evaluation reflects an immediate, holistic impression of the season or movie upon first viewing, prior to applying detailed metric calculations. This preliminary rating captures the initial impact, engagement, and general satisfaction derived from the narrative, visuals, and characters. I continuously expand my knowledge and refine my evaluative frameworks; additional categories or adjustments may be incorporated as my critical perspective evolves. |
