If that was your conclusion then you did not understand anything, all the characters had loneliness in common (Shinji, Asuka, Misato even Gendo because of the wife. No, Evangelion is one of the best along with a handful of others like Serial Experiments lain, Monster, Death note, Cowboy Bebop and movies like Perfect Blue, Akira, The Princess Mononoke.
