Your review of Banana fish is spot on. I was LOVING the show and was able to ignore all the gay. (and I am fully open to gay if it fits the plot but this was too unbelievable lmao) It was so good though. But after episode 12, where he gets kidnapped by the scientists and they suddenly need his over 200+ IQ brain to finish Banana Fish................... excuse me... what............ Am I watching the same show? And once he gets out of there the show seems to forget all the prior plot and just becomes about how much he loves this Japanese kid he DOESN'T EVEN KNOW. Sure. Okay. Thanks. I hate it.

I am on episode 18 so I might as well slog through to the end. But I won't enjoy it.

For each their own, but I wanted to add something to your review at Banana Fish. It is mentioned several times that Dino recognized Ash's intelligence what saved the boy from slavery. It is mentioned several times that he educated him. And if you watch what kind of teachers and doctors Dino brings to Ash - the answer is simply - the best ones. Blanca is elite former KGB. Dino clearly says that he will bring the best doctors, that he educated the bonde not only in the art of killng, but refined his taste and style (not that Ash was into it too much) and educated him. In manga, it is elaborated on Ash`s abilities in tactics, when he fights in underground canals and with Foxx- it is a battle of wits of a boy against profesionals. He has great abilities of accumulating informations, which is mentioned. Profesional doctor/scientist speaks highly of his report on chemical characterization of banana fish. It was all before inteligence test as far as I can remember. Honestly I expected him to be a genius since about 3 episode. I read manga later.
Ash since the day one was avoiding unnecesary killings (again - expressly mentioned) up until time that he had to teach Artur's thugs a lesson. When he was forced into this situation we got a conversation with Eji.
And most of the sex thing in this show is:
a) sex as a violence and a way to subjugate peope - unfortunately it is not true that heterosexual males do not inflict this kind of torture on other males in war like conditions. There is a difference between sex for pleasure and sex as in form of torture. Also most of the people are in different shades of bi section. Hardcore homo and and heterosexuals are minority. As in: I prefer males, but will not be traumatisied by women. Simpy don`t want them. And in Banana Fish we got the lowest scum in as warlike conditiones as peaceful times allow.
b) we are talking about gang which makes money off drugs and selling boys into sexual slavery. So yes, a lot of characters will think that Ash is hot or will try to subjugate him. Ash is not default mobster but alpha male there.
c) Characters from the "outside" - they do not care about Ash.
