Shinseiki Evangelion Movie: Air/Magokoro wo, Kimi ni

Shinji Ikari is left emotionally comatose after the death of a dear friend. With his son mentally unable to pilot the humanoid robot Evangelion Unit-01, Gendou Ikari's NERV races against the shadow organization SEELE to see who can enact their ultimate plan first. SEELE desires to create a godlike being by fusing their own souls into an Evangelion unit, while Gendou wishes to revert all of humanity into one primordial being so that he can be reunited with Yui, his deceased wife.

SEELE unleashes its military forces in a lethal invasion of NERV headquarters. As SEELE's forces cut down NERV's scientists and security personnel, Asuka Langley Souryuu pilots Evangelion Unit-02 in a desperate last stand against SEELE's heaviest weaponry.

The battle rages on, and a depressed Shinji hides deep within NERV's headquarters. With the fate of the world resting in Shinji's hands, Captain Misato Katsuragi hunts for the teenage boy as society crumbles around them.

The memory of the widespread hatred for Shinji Ikari contains a profound truth, we only condemned in him what we had already hated, and suppressed, within ourselves.

The initial revulsion directed at him was not born of his failings, but of a shared, unacknowledged vulnerability. We condemned his self-doubt and his impulse to retreat—traits we diligently suppress beneath the rigid armor of our adult façades. His palpable, agonizing reluctance became a despised mirror, reflecting the deep, uncomfortable truth that our own hard-won competence is often just a thin shield over an enduring, childlike fear of engagement. Thus, the initial hatred was merely the pain of seeing ... our unresolved inner conflict given agonizingly raw expression.

The contempt aimed at Shinji was never about his inability to pilot the Evangelion, it was about the way his existential refusal illuminated our own forced consent to duty. We resented his passive recoil because we had already signed the contract of necessity, which denied us the option of turning away, choosing to wear the armor of adulthood even if it hollowed us out.

To finally reach the point of saying, "He is just like me," is not to excuse his behavior, but to perform an act of self-compassion. It is the realization that the severe contempt we felt for Shinji was, in truth, a perfect measure of how deeply we had internalized the contempt for the 'unwilling child' still residing, fearful and silent, within ourselves.

Mixed Feelings

As someone who loves the original Evangelion series and the Rebuild series. I understand that the story is overcomplicated, the fans are pretentious and annoying, however ever since i finished the original series, i didn't like the last 2 episodes of the series. However I disliked this Movie even moreso, i understand that it's point is to portray depraved and confused characters, the most weird and sometimes disgusting scenes you've heard about sorrounding the Evangelion franchise are mostly from this movie. i know its to purposefully make the viewer uncomfortable, but still it just didn't feel like the creators wanted to make this movie. i ... liked shinji's character in the series, i never really liked misato's character, but this movie made understanding her character even more confusing

i really want to put this in the 'Not Recommended' option, however to the people who can stomach horrifying and disturbing endings like Berserk, you might like this, im very confused on my actual opinion of this movie. Anyone telling you that the series ending was actually good doesn't understand the ending, it was clearly rushed, but i expected this movie to conclude it, now im even more confused on whats going on, i dont want to watch hours-long video essays and read college thesis-long explanations, i want to understand myself what's going on in this movie and franchise as a whole.

I do not hate this movie, but those who do, are mostly valid for hating it, i just heavily dislike it.

No idea what this was, for starters this is an ending to the series not a standalone movie.(Incase you haven't seen the series)

For any normal person looking for a quick review, whatever they started smoking at the end of the anime still hadn't worn off when they wrote this movie. There will be no real answers, or enjoyable plot, just ego stroking for the writers. (they did a real self insert at the start IYKYK)

I feel any reviewer that gave it a positive review should be required to explain the entirety of the plot, with drives, character arcs, setups and payoffs. IMO you should ... be able to summarize the fundamental lesson/focus/struggle in 1-2 sentences for a show to be good/focused. It would probably take pages to try to explain what was going on, and as a viewer I took away nothing was going on.

There's about 20 minutes of plot with the base attack which is the synopsis on MyAnimeList, there isn't any really setup/payoff to this its just a thing that happens mid-movie. The other 60 minutes are the insane ramblings of a clearly horny, look at my intellect type writer. The kind of guy you see getting swirlied and when his head finally comes out of the toilet he keeps explaining how it was actually very intellectual and deep with its themes and imagery.

The "deep intellectual" points are actually just surface level questions which they then proceed not to setup, explain, answer, or confront in any way then proceed to flash something else so you don't think about how dumb they actually sounded.

Technical Aspects
Pretty good animation - Alot of it wasted on the insanity scenes and not much in the way of scenic or establishing shots.
Voice acting - Good, some scenes feel mismatched but thats probably just down to the poor script
Plot - None existent, actually negative if you count all the stuff they just take/assume you know from the series
Music - Not bad, was a couple scenes i had my suspension of disbelief broken, laughing thinking why certain music was playing though
Character Development - None, It's like watching parody of who they were from the series
Writing/Script - Bad. They're saying words, they did indeed write down words in the script. Half is technical jargon, half is nonsensical attempts at "art". Was watching with original subtitles so I was wondering while watching if they were just struggling to translate. (that's how little there's to engage with in the movie)

Hope the writers friends checked up on the guy and got him help, then politely yet firmly told him this wasn't it.
