Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen - Mirai-hen

After Makoto Naegi and his fellow survivors escaped Hope's Peak Academy to the world beyond, they soon join the Future Foundation, an organization dedicated to combating despair. Just when all seems to be looking up, Naegi is arrested and tried for betrayal due to defending a malicious group of Remnants of Despair. Standing before all of the Future Foundation executives, he finds himself, along with Kyouko Kirigiri and Aoi Asahina, facing an unknown fate.

The matter at hand only escalates when the organization's supposedly impenetrable security is hacked into by a familiar face: Monokuma. Much to Naegi's horror, the mechanical bear immediately announces the beginning of a new killing game, as moments later, the first victim appears as a signal for despair to resume its brutal conquest.

Naegi, the Super High School-Level Lucky Student, must once again unravel the mystery as his colleagues and friends begin falling around him. However, there are no more class trials; among the 16 desperate participants, there is only one killer—and their death means the end of this infernal game.

This was one of those anime I started ages ago, watched about half of the first season… and then completely forgot about. It just slipped out of my mind somehow. But now that I finally came back to it, I’m actually really satisfied with the whole experience. I won’t lie, the episode order and the continuation were confusing at times. The structure is chaotic, the pacing jumps around, and sometimes you’re just sitting there like “wait… what?” But once I pushed through and finished it, I ended up being pleasantly surprised ^^ The twists, the characters, the insane atmosphere, it all came together ... in a way that made the return totally worth it. I’m glad I gave it another chance, because the ending hit way better than I expected. A messy journey, but a surprisingly rewarding one.

Mixed Feelings

I've played Danganronpa 1 & 2, however if you haven't then I'd give this is a miss. If you have, this closes out the arc so if you're into the lore then it's a mandatory watch. Also, I watched on Crunchyroll which alternates the episodes between the future and despair arc's, I recommend this as the way to watch. It's clearly intended to be watched that way.

The future arc's main purpose is to tie all the loose ends together. It quickly becomes a battle royale anime with little to distinguish it from any other. The writing has kinda got that Danganronpa flair but it's also ... someone muted as the plot takes a front seat here.

There's a whole host of new characters. But don't waste your time remembering most of them, you can guess whose going to survive from halfway through episode one and very few of them have any real characteristic worth noting. The anime knows this and rarely holds suspense on this stuff, again it all points to the overarching plot from the first Danganronpa game.

Watch it for the plot, to give yourself closure if you, like me, have got sucked into the Danganronpa universe.

The entire point of Danganronpa is that you end up in a setting where you get to know a bunch of other characters before (and while) you all end up killing each other. That's the entire point. The ENTIRE point.

So like, what the hell was this. What are we doing. A bunch of new character that we didn't really get to know at all dying and the only thing possibly keeping you interested is the fact that this has a 3 at the end of it. Half the time I just don't acknowledge this show, it just feels so pointless, but it feels worse knowing ... that most people who would watch in the current year won't watch it as it aired, where each week Mirai-hen and Zetsubou-hen would alternate. The first episode of Zetsubou-hen literally starts by showing events that happened in Mirai-hen, and the stories told in Zetsubou-hen often inform narrative plot points and characters in the upcoming Mirai-hen episodes. They're not meant to be watched apart.

Anyway, incredibly mediocre show. Two good things did come out of it, though. First, the ending is genuinely fantastic, one of my favorite endings of any anime. The second is a bit less enduring and isn't really something the show *does* so much as what it inspires, but it's that the theorycrafting from week to week was a TON of fun. The fact that an episode of this show effectively came out every two weeks actually helped that a lot because there would be a lot of discussion about the episode after it aired and then after Zetsubou-hen came out there would be theorycrafting about *that* and discussion about this would get bolstered by information from the Zetsu episodes. It's not really relevant to a current watch, and it's a bit worse in retrospect because most of the fun theories, however much sense they made, usually up ended either wrong or right but in the least exciting way possible. I think there was only like, one plot point that its roots showing early on that actually ended up being a fun reveal, and the character it's related to (one new to this show) I actually ended up liking a lot by the end. That didn't really save the show, though.
