Kumo desu ga, Nani ka?

The day is as normal as it can be in high school as the students peacefully go about their everyday activities until an unprecedented catastrophe strikes the school, killing every person in its wake. Guided by what seems to be a miracle, a handful of students are fortunate enough to be reincarnated into another world as nobles, princes, and other kinds of people with prestigious backgrounds.

One girl, however, is not so lucky. Being reborn as a spider of the weakest kind, she immediately experiences the hardships of her dire situation. Even so, she must press on to survive the numerous threats that endanger her life. Discovering that her new world has a system like that of an RPG, she tries her best to hunt prey and defeat monsters to level up and evolve. As she gradually grows stronger, she hopes one day her efforts will be rewarded, and that she will be granted a better life.

After completing this anime I was just left speechless. At the beginning I thought it would go along the lines of Tensura but I was extremely wrong. First thing that will hit you when you watch this anime is the question of 'when will they meet' I'm not going to lay down any spoilers but this question bugged me for like 12 episode. The way the story basically unravels is in a 2 time narrative. Asin two stories happening at different times are being shown at the same time showcasing different characters. But what kept me going was just wanting to know when and how ... the fates of these 2 stories would link up in the present which is also the future of the main character.
The downside of this anime is the animation. I believe this was the main blow leading to this anime not getting a season 2 (so far).so if Ur going to watch this do not expect top tier animation like Sentenced to be a hero episode 1. Anyways the ending of the anime is a main point and I really want to know what happens next so I'm off to the sources material

Mixed Feelings

I like the plot although until she really starts interacting with ppl her side is actually a little boring and tbh monotonous. The scenes with the other reincarnations is fascinating and very well written. The season climax was interesting for sure, there were many things that I'm not sure if I could call plot twists because there was simply too much information missing to draw many conclusions but I was surprised.


My main two critics are:

the lack of a true shock (Even delayed and/or minor) at dying and the loss of the MCs past life (she just kind of told with it without any ... grief or depression that I would expect and without any explain for why that is)

and

the overuse of CGI and how most of this anime looks more like a video rather than an anime.


So like, 8/10 for plot and originality but 4/10 for animation and foreshadowing?

This show has an interesting hook with the main character, Kumoko, being a human reincarnated as a spider monster in a fantasy world and some unusual ideas but it has too many core issues to be recommended from my perspective.

I'm not calling Kumoko the protagonist as the story is told through multiple characters' perspectives and this leads to some interesting narrative connections and payoffs, which is one of the show's strengths. Another strength is the stark difference between the fantasy RPG lives of the humans embroiled in royal politics and Kumoko's actions vs her own battle-heavy dungeon-crawling RPG life. Kumoko's battles are basically puzzles where ... RPG systems are used to defeat opponents but it is like Yu-Gi-Oh! where anything can be made up to win so the stakes aren't really believable although the action can be quite solid. The issues continue on from there as Kumoko is a spider and a monster in that world so her actions are frequently extremely gruesome and outright evil but they're presented as cutesy to try and con the audience into thinking it's fine. The story also commits the storytelling crimes of hand-waiving important events away and adding unbelievable actions to get the story to go in directions which extend the plot, which break immersion. Speaking of immersion, when I mentioned RPG earlier I literally meant game systems, not RPG-like but literally game RPG systems in what should be a fantasy world. I'm not a fan of cheap plot devices where the world-building isn't believable and simply riding off familiarity with video games (even considering the in-universe explanation) instead of actually crafting the intricacies to fit the world. There may be other shows that do this (I tend to avoid fantasy isekai in general) but when one like this is attempting to build a high stakes fantasy world, literally ripping off Final Fantasy items breaks immersion irrevocably.

The plot itself takes some time to get going but the fantasy side of it actually tries some interesting things that do up the stakes, even if sometimes predictably. Unfortunately, this season ends in the middle of one battle while resolving another and while it feels fine given I wasn't too invested in the show, if you were you might be left dissatisfied especially without another season released. The 24 episode length allows it to introduce the wider narrative and world mysteries so there are some open questions by the end of it as expected. Thankfully, the novel it is based on is complete so you can find answers to your questions if any after some searching online (or reading the books).

Back to some positives, the technical execution of the show is more than adequate with frequently excellent 2D animation with interesting use of camera angles rotating around characters and good CGI and scale in Kumoko's battles (can't have been easy animating this many 8-legged battle sequences). The music is also fine. Funnily, the Bluray version has worse animation than the broadcast version based on a comparison I saw online but I only watched the broadcast (streaming) version. The voice acting is also excellent, especially for Kumoko herself whose voice actor does an outstanding job being bubbly without being over the top (even though the character's actions are frequently unacceptable). These aspects aren't enough to get the show past its narrative issues in my opinion so I can't recommended it. If you still want to give it a shot, there's a few interesting points about the show but be prepared to be disappointed when looking beyond the surface.
