Mayonaka Heart Tune

When Arisu Yamabuki was all alone in bed at night, he was able to find solace in the voice of a radio host who went by "Apollo." However, one day, she simply stopped broadcasting without any explanation. Years then passed, and Arisu is now a second-year high-schooler. He makes it his mission to search for Apollo, as there is something he wants to tell her. He doesn't know what she looks like, or even what her real name is, but he manages to get some leads on her in his school's broadcasting club. That's where he meets four girls who all dream to get a job where they can make full use of their voices! Just who is Apollo, and how will those four's dreams pan out?

‎As someone who read the manga before the anime adaptation was announced, I went into Mayonaka Heart Tune with cautious expectations — and thankfully, the anime managed to deliver where it mattered most.

‎First off, the art style transition from manga to anime is handled well. While the manga still has the edge in terms of detail and visual charm, the anime’s art style stays faithful and doesn’t stray far from the original. It’s not a downgrade — just slightly less polished compared to the manga, which is honestly expected.

‎In terms of animation, I didn’t set my expectations too high, probably due to what feels like ... a modest budget. That said, the animation is decent and consistent. It’s not flashy, but more importantly, it’s not distracting or unpleasant to watch. For a dialogue and emotion driven series like this, that’s more than enough.

‎What really matters is that the story remains intact. The anime preserves the heart of what made the manga special its unique premise, calm pacing, and emotional connection between characters. The narrative still feels fresh and personal, especially compared to more generic romcoms.

‎One of the strongest aspects of this adaptation is the voice acting, which is absolutely crucial given the concept of the story. Since Mayonaka Heart Tune heavily revolves around voices, late-night conversations, and emotional intimacy conveyed through sound rather than action, strong voice performances are essential — and the cast delivers. The voice acting adds depth, warmth, and authenticity to the characters, enhancing the overall experience.

‎The characters are still as charming as ever, especially for readers who already appreciate the manga’s well written scenarios and interactions. First episode was enough to remind me why I liked this story in the first place, and it convinced me to keep watching without hesitation.

‎Overall, I highly recommend this anime to anyone looking for a casual romcom with a harem setup — something relaxing, emotionally grounded, and easy to enjoy. Hopefully, it won’t end up like The Quintessential Quintuplets, where the ending left many fans dissatisfied. Honestly, every heroine here feels like a best girl, and YamabuKING is the GOAT!

Mixed Feelings

The manga is peak with every chapter feeling complete and decisive and with way better flow , feel and emotion.
Compared to that the only thing the adaptation has going for it is the opening and the VAs.
It feels a lot disappointing for it to be treated as a training project for a studio, its not even bearable to lose this much of impact and turned into emotionless, flowless and average recycled anime when it could reach peak.

The animation also ruins the personality and manga representation of most characters like yamabuki really does not give the aura he had in manga. Like the dude was aura ... farming every next chapter.
I hope they do remake or atleast give a better season 2 rather than killing its potential and bottlenecking it through this studio.

I am not going to pull any punches here. This adaptation is absolutely awful and I feel bad for the manga's author, since he surely must have been one of the first people to experience this mess.

- The animation is horrendous - I feel like the main characters are badly drawn in most of the frames. This production does not have a consistent character design, Yamabuki has a different looking face in every scene (which was especially visible in the 4th episode) and the girls do not look much better than him. If you want an example of that, just check out some of the ... scenes in episode 3 and look at poor Iko. Background characters look so deformed that I'm wondering who was "brave" enough to decide to release the anime in this state.

- There's hardly any motion in the scenes - they are mostly static (and when there is some motion... the scene where Yamabuki was running up the stairs in episode 1 still makes me shiver). Mouth movement? Not synchronized with lines from the voice actors at all. Characters often open their mouth completely at random (this was especially visible on Rikka and Shinobu in episode 4).

- The worst part is that the studio was not able to replicate the most iconic manga panels in the anime - while in the manga they look absolutely stunning, in the anime there's nearly no visual effects at all. It feels like nothing's really happening on the screen, when in reality, those moments are crucial to the story.

- Characters like Nene or Rikka feel... different than in the manga. I compared some of Rikka's panels from the manga to the same moments in the anime and they were not "translated" well (example: the scene where she calls Yamabuki a liar in episode 2). Other characters are more acceptable, but they still feel bland in comparison to their manga counterparts.

- Some of the scenes from the manga were cut from the adaptation and some elements were either censored or changed. But don't get me wrong - I am not saying that changing some things from the source material is a sin, and I think that there were a few changes done by the studio that were appropriate.

- The opening is mediocre - I feel like there was a big opportunity to do something interesting with it, since this manga is about every possible usage of voice in a career. But maybe I'm too demanding ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's one good thing about this anime - the voice actors are trying their best, and I appreciate it. But it's simply not enough to call this adaptation even "fine". The only thing that I can praise this studio for is that they "tried" to do something with the lighting in some of the scenes and it looked... fine?. But that's all. Honestly, watching this series is frustrating, especially if you know how good the manga is.

By the way, the studio that's responsible for this adaptation (Gekkou) made one more anime that's currently airing - "Yuusha Party ni Kawaii Ko ga Ita node, Kokuhaku shitemita." I'm watching both of their series this season, and I really feel like the fantasy one looks better. I guess their priorites were somewhere else.

I still regret that Doga Kobo, Bibury Animation or even Shaft did not receive the rights to adapt this manga. There's only 4 episodes out, but I don't believe that the situation will be much better at the end of the season. It's a shame, this manga deserves a much better adaptation.
