Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki

Every time Yoi Takiguchi so much as lets out a sigh, her female classmates squeal in admiration and awe. She has been dubbed the school's "prince" by virtue of her boyishly attractive appearance and casual disposition. However, she chooses to be indifferent toward the attention she receives and spends her days normally—that is, until the school's other prince, Kohaku Ichimura, waltzes into her life and calls her beautiful.

Kohaku is nothing like a prince—he acts thoughtlessly and does as he pleases. But when he compliments her, Yoi feels flustered, and the way he looks at her gets her all nervous. He is the first boy to acknowledge her as a girl, and her attempts to distance herself prove futile as he seems to have set his sights on her. While Yoi keeps telling herself that it is nothing serious, even she cannot completely ignore the stir Kohaku causes in her heart.

The dynamic between this couple is amazing. I was expecting something slower and more emotional, but the direction strikes a balance between comedy, a not-so-slow romance, and lightheartedness—a balance that makes the anime quite interesting to watch because it doesn't become tiring or boring, but rather more dynamic. The protagonist is full of attitude but knows when to back off without acting desperate. The princess, aka prince, is very spontaneous without forcing it, because she has zero experience, and her reactions are hilarious. The animation, in general, is very lively and well-done, and you can see the care in the art. So far, I consider ... continuing to watch it; it's really enjoyable, and those who like shoujo can watch it without fear of disappointment, and those who enjoy romance can also give it a chance.

ANIME REVIEW IN THE CLEAR MOONLIT DUSK / URUWASHI NO YOI NO TSUKI (3-episode rule)

These first three episodes feel like a "love letter" to classic shoujo: simple, sweet, and focused on small, heartwarming moments. It's not the kind of story that's eager to show off its twists, but rather comfortable because it knows exactly where it's going.

VISUALS:
The animation studio does a great job bringing the characters to life, even though the source material is a shoujo manga known for its many close-up panels of faces. I like the "overly bishounen" vibe that's maintained, but somehow it doesn't come off as cringey; instead, it's more stylish ... and fits the world of the story.

As for the colors, the soft pastel palette really helps: Yoi and Kohaku's "handsomeness" feels dreamy, delicate, and elegant, rather than dazzling or garish. The bottom line: the visuals know how to be romantic without being overly dramatic.

MUSIC:
The opening and ending are both performed by the same band, UNISON SQUARE GARDEN, that felt like nostalgia of returning home. The genre and tone are perfect for everyday romance: energetic, yet lighthearted.

Unfortunately, the BGM in the episodes sometimes feels a bit too comical for a shoujo romance that aims for a more "fluttery" feel. But for three episodes, it's still bearable, and it doesn't interfere with the emotional moments.

VOICE:
For the Japanese version, Kohaku is voiced by Ryōta Suzuki. He's known for playing stoic characters like Yū Ishigami (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Morihito Otogi (Witch Watch). But here, he plays the "princely playboy" Kohaku, and it feels like a breath of fresh air. There's a mischievous side, there's a sincere side, and most importantly, his voice can shift from "seductive" to "serious" without feeling fake.

Meanwhile, in the English dub, Kohaku is voiced by Joshua Waters, and of course, this name is even more recognizable thanks to his phenomenal voice acting performance as Phainon in Honkai: Star Rail.

PLOT AND NARRATION:
I've always had the same standard of values for any fictions: NARRATIVE, NARRATIVE, NARRATIVE!

And honestly, the narrative here isn't anything "wow," it just follows a fairly common shoujo pattern. But that's precisely what makes it feel like a return to classic standards. It's like watching a 2000s shoujo anime, but with modern visuals and a more "TV-friendly" pace.
What made me laugh: the plot is pretty fast-paced for a shoujo… they start dating in episode 2!! (Kazuya from Kanokari need to learn from them).

Because the original manga is known for its slow pace, the anime version feels like it's going full throttle. In one episode, it feels like it can cover several chapters at once, and some parts even feel compressed or swapped around. The effect is that the narrative is more expeditious than the manga. While it might be effective for anime-only viewers, manga readers can sometimes feel like, "Wait, it's already this far?"

CHARACTERS:
My biggest criticism so far is with Yoi: it's emphasized too often that she doesn't like being treated like a "prince" because she wants to be treated femininely like a normal girl. The message is important, but the repetition makes Yoi seem a bit flat and lacks a lot of psychological depth. She has a lot of potential for development: regarding identity, how people perceive him, and how he views himself.

Kohaku, on the other hand, feels fleshed out much more quickly. In 3 episodes, he's already shown significant growth: He's begun to tone down his playboy style, maintains a healthy distance, respects Yoi as a woman, and at the same time becomes more assertive/aggressive in the direction of their relationship (in a way that still feels romantic).

Only 3 episodes aired so far when this review is written, and if it's only a short season, there's likely limited room to explore the supporting characters, so I don't have high hopes for the supporting cast. The main focus is clear: the "prince (♀) × prince (♂)" dynamic.

CLOSING:
I'll continue watching, and I won't dropped this series. This isn't an anime that aims to be revolutionary, but the first three episodes are neat, sweet, and know how to make the audience smile. It's perfect for those who miss classic shoujo romance: What matters isn't the explosive drama, but the small, heartwarming moments. I might be a bit biased because I've been following this series since the manga was released (back during the COVID-19 pandemic), but overall, it's a good anime. 👍
