💥 Welcome 💥
Check out my book
Chapter 1
Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick…
“I’m heading off Elias, you staying longer?” Came a voice from across the library room.
That was the student body president, Alice. Second place in most of her classes, popular, comes from a wealthy background much like yours truly and the one that just had to ruin my rhythm for a great long night of studying.
“What was that?” Alice said.
Bah, I said all that out loud again, “Leave the keys” I called out.
“Suit yourself” She left the keys on the librarian's desk as she made off, thank goodness she’s gone.
Tick, tick, tick…
That broken clock is more noticeable in the evening as the quietness of the library is deafening, no other students or teachers around except for me. I kept spinning my pen around his fingers as if waiting for something to happen, even though I’d already finished my note-taking for the day.
Tick, tick, tick…
Time's a funny thing, isn't it?
It can be an instrument that people waste haphazardly, the most important concept someone can hold dear, or it can be the root of all destruction that could cause the downfall of everything.
I like to use it to my advantage, spending my free time working hard so I can succeed and live lavishly later on in life. Unlike most of my peers who muck around, partying and getting into relationships that will inevitably fall apart after some dumb argument.
I know that working hard and not having fun once in a while has its downsides such as the loss of friendships, stress and over-exhaustion, but when it all pays off in the end they’ll all be working lower-class jobs while I’ll be living my best life at the top.
Tick, tick, tick…
"When will they get that thing fixed" I muttered irately to myself.
A sudden dull pain ran through my head and my free hand instinctively reached up to cradle it, a common occurrence I’ve been having so nothing I’m not used to.
"Bah, my head."
Somehow I’ve sat studying for hours with that irritable clock in the background and I somehow haven't gone crazy yet. I've been staying at my university library later and later these days as my final exams are coming up soon.
"Sigh, guess I should head off, it's late."
I packed up my papers, and pens, and started to leave along with my small waist-side bag, dark coat and scarf, making sure to grab the keys to lock up after I left since the cleaners had already left earlier too.
Passing through the hall towards the door, a wall of trophies and awards cast a wave of hope in me as many of the names on that wall spelled out my name; “Top in History, Elias Ashborn”, “Top in Political sciences, Elias Ashborn”, “Top in English, Elias Ashborn.” I’m glad to have been a successful student my whole life, so my test tomorrow should be a sweep. I've got nothing to worry about.
The evening winter chill hit my face as I passed through the campus doors, turning my nose and ear tips pink and my breath creating smoke clouds in front of me with each exhale.
"Some hot soup sounds quite nice, I think I'll spoil myself for once."
Along with some good food, taking a detour home would do me well. After all, I think I deserve a break from studying and a change of scenery would do me good anyway.
I walked down the barren street, taking in the atmosphere of the neighbourhood which was brand new to me. Noticing the freshly cut lawns and the dimly lit rooms behind each curtain coming from the houses and apartments contrary to his place.
Finding myself further up the street there came a quaint building I hadn’t seen before, a maroon-coloured shop with yellow windows, tinted by the inside lights. Strange how any shops would still be open this late into the evening.
Well, there’s no harm in checking it out, it’s still open and just browsing can be fun.
A small chime of a bell rang as I entered and the chill of the outside subsided compelling me to take off my heavy coat. Walking in further, the room indicated to be rustic and worn, with dusty maroon curtains and slightly chipped wood on the stained walls. The shop also gave off a glowing aura from the lamps on the walls, along with the openness of the room.
I lightly browsed through the selection of watches in the glass cabinet at the back of the store, all way too pricey for a student like me. One watch did catch my eye though, a pocket watch, in the back corner not giving itself much attention. It looked a bit dull but had a very detailed casing that fascinated me.
Upon closer inspection, it seemed broken as both hands were jolting back and forth at rhythmic intervals and none of the numbers were printed under the glass case, but it still looked very well made and in good condition otherwise.
“Uh, hello?”
“Just a second” the shopkeeper exclaimed as he came out from a room in the back.
“Can I take a look at the one in the back?” As I pointed to the pocket watch I glanced up at the shopkeeper, no nametag.
The shopkeeper took out the watch and handed it to me, in his grasp it felt solid and had a generous weight to it. The roughness of the back and the unique pattern on the front is distinct and satisfying in my hands, I could already see myself flipping it open from time to time.
“Uh… how much for it?”
“As it’s a bit worn, I can discount it for you. How about twenty silver?”
“I’ll take it.” What a bargain, it looks great and it should be easy to fix it up…
“Wait, how much did you say?”
“Twenty silver.”
That’s odd, silver? We don’t use silver?
The snugness of the shop suddenly went colder and a heavy chilling sensation ran down my spine and into the soles of my feet. Something feels off, the atmosphere’s changed.
As the watch was still gripped tightly in his hands I turned around to glance out the store’s large glass windows, none of the grey apartment buildings he’s used to stood outside anymore. Nor was the street illuminated by the lamp posts, but a neatly tiled walkway. Bustling with old and young alike wearing clothing that seemed to look old victorian-esque.
This doesn’t seem like home, this isn’t good.
“Fuck.”
Chapter 2
[left]A rush of thoughts penetrated my head like a burst of needles, causing not only my headache from earlier to return but my chest to close in on me. Where am I, what am I doing here, how can I get back, will I get back, can I even get back, how did this even happen- Breath in… and out…
“This is not the time to be stressing” I declared to myself. What I need to do is keep my cool, get out of here, and assess my situation.
“Sir, are you buying the watch?”
“Uh sorry, no”
I placed the watch back down on the counter half in a daze. Although the watch was interesting, it would have to wait for another day as I don’t have the money to purchase it, at least, no money from this strange world.
What I did have were the belongings he brought with him still in my waist side bag that had thankfully transported with me. I hoped at least something of his other than my books, could be of use in my newfound time of need.
“Um, sir, are you ok there?”
“Does anything seem off to you?”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Where am I?”
“You’re inside my watch shop, The Wanderlust.”
Great, that helps me a ton. If this old bat can’t be of any real help, I’ll just have to do it myself. The only way to succeed is to rely on yourself, that's for sure.
I donned my coat to leave as I had no reason to stay any longer.
“Have a wonderful day sir” the shopkeeper waved as I left.
The bell chimed again as he stepped through the chipped door and into the vibrant new world. The streets were littered with people going about their day, many seemingly walking to work as not only the chill, but the dawn lustre bathing the streets suggested it was rather early.
The cool air once again biting at his nose and ear tips, I had to wrap his scarf more around my face as I stepped into the traffic of people, obscuring my appearance from others and hopefully not drawing any attention to myself.
I took off down the street to take in my new surroundings, warm brick buildings towering on each side of the narrow street, while the stale dirt road was seen accommodating the regular horse and cart. It reminded me of my classes back at university where they learnt about 19th-century Europe. Although this was not my world, I don’t know how much of a difference there could be.
Shouts, screams and cheers could be heard in the distance further along past the rows of shops and residential apartments on either side of the way.
Walking further and further I noticed the crowds of people walking along with me were headed in the direction of said cheers, many residents pushed past him as they rushed past and disappeared into the crowds of people up ahead.
The shouting grew louder as I decided to move along with the pack, closer to what event may be waiting for him up ahead.
“Off with his head!”
The first audible cries were heard as I came up to the large crush of people and squeezed past a few, moving more into the crowd to get a closer view.
“Burn him!”
“Die you bastard!”
“Rot in hell scum!”
Among the crowds of chanting people up ahead stood an elevated wooden platform with four chained men, hunched over with their heads covered by sacks, kneeling next to a tall man in a dark navy uniform with a whip at his waist side.
“These four men were found illegally practicing magic and have committed treason of the highest degree! They will now be severely punished for their crimes against the state!” The man in the navy uniform bellowed out towards the people.
“Magic?” I muttered under my breath.
I watched in awe as the officer dragged the first prisoner out of his chains and tied him to the platform's center post, forcing him to wrap his arms around as if he were hugging it for dear life. The crowd still crying out for him to be brutally persecuted and that he should be ashamed of himself.
The prisoner yet did not resist as not only he but the other men had already been beaten before, bodies dressed in bruises, cuts and did not have the will to stand against their enforcer any longer.
“This is what happens to those who choose to neglect the law and put lives at risk by practicing the illegal act of magic!” The officer roared, targeting his words at rule breakers who may be hiding amongst the crowd.
“If you are found practicing this system, we will have no choice but to make an example of you, much like these poor gentlemen here who have so kindly given themselves up for us on this fine morning.”
With a collection of applause, permeating my ears the officer unfastened his whip from his side
I turned to leave, having to jostle my way through the cramped spaces the crowd had provided. No way am I going to have my initiation into this new world scarred by watching this. I’ve seen my fair share of gory action flicks but watching something like this in real life is a whole nother story.
So this world has magic huh, much like your regular “guy gets transported to another world” kind of magic, yeah I know that kind. Although this is different, magic seems to be a crime. I wouldn’t want my latent power as an mc to suddenly burst out would I, heh.
Walking away from the masses, I heard the whip cracking on the man's back as I flinched at the first strike, I couldn’t make out his cries even if he was as the crowd was loud enough to overpower his struggle.
A hand was then placed on my shoulder.
“Hey mister.”
Chapter 3
[left]A warm cheerful voice passed my ears.
“Wow, what a nice coat you’re wearing. Where’d ya get it?”
I spun around to see nobody in my view except the crowd as before, still continuing their cheers.
“It’s really good quality, did ya get it from up in the capital?”
Looking down, the boy was much shorter than me, about two heads shorter than my six-foot stature, feeling up my expensive coat.
“Who are you?” I asked, as I took a step back from the boy getting further away from the crowd.
“Sorry mister, I’ve just never seen a nice coat like this, you’re not from around here are you?” The boy followed suit and took a step forward towards me, clearly an overly friendly type.
I was too stunned to speak, it had been less than an hour and I had already been picked out from the rest of the people as unusual by some scruffy white-haired kid.
“My name’s Caius, you are?”
“Elias,” I said sceptically looking him up and down subtly so as to not make it obvious that I was already making assumptions. A beret with patches poorly sewn, a tan vest over a thin white shirt, and dirty pinstripe pants, he must not have much money seeing how he isn’t even wearing a jacket in this cold weather.
"Well, imma call you Eli," Caius said with a cheerful grin as he held out his hand looking for a handshake.
My face squinted into a scowl, good luck getting a handshake out of me. I’m not one to get attached to people and it isn't really on my bucket list. I’m not starting now.
"Yeah, no thanks," I took another step back into a turn, indicating I had to go. In reality, I just wanted to get away from this child.
“Not a shaker I see, how about a bump?” Caius cheekily snarked as he formed a fist out of his outstretched hand.
He's clearly not going to give up, a fist bump should be fine I guess. I quickly bump his fist and take another step backwards.
"Ah, you must be busy, no worries. I'll catch ya another time."
Caius waved back at me as he broke out into a light jog past the large crowd of people and into the area of town I hadn’t discovered yet.
"Ugh" I rolled my eyes. Thank goodness he's gone.
I briefly patted down my coat, as he had ruffled it up.
“Wait, my pocket… is it… uh…?” My eyes suddenly widened in exasperation and realized what had occurred. “Bah!” Caius had slipped my wallet somehow. It’s not like there was anything worthwhile in there anymore, but I’m definitely going to need it when I return back home somehow.
My feet kicked up a small cloud of dust as I took off running on the dirt road, pushing past the crowds of people still blocking up the road.
As I got through to the other side of the people and into the streets of the part of the town I hadn’t explored yet it dawned on me, although he can’t have gone far and I might be able to find him… I still have no clue where I am which leaves me at an unfortunately huge disadvantage.
I probably won’t spot him by his clothing since it seemed like common attire in this town and blended in quite well with the other civilians around his height. I can probably point out his hair colour since nobody I’ve seen had white hair much like him.
I scanned the area for anybody running or any unusual movements trying to pinpoint the thief. I shouldn’t underestimate anyone here and he seems experienced enough to know not to run and to try and blend in for someone of his appearance. Hopefully, he should still be around this area.
A bustling street with suits, hats and ties walking to work, children playing with sticks and stones by the roadside, and money exchanging hands at the street vendors, but there was not a single person in sight that looked like my pickpocket.
“Sigh…” My determined appearance had quickly turned down a few notches. Not only had I just got my wallet taken, but now I probably won’t even make it back to take my final exam tomorrow. I had been studying my butt off for that test and had everything I needed to pass. The long hours of hard work every day ready to be paid off, my long-awaited success right within my reach but it had to be ruined by coming here.
As I looked up at the buildings of the town; a bakery, a hat shop and a library. With no money, I can’t buy anything obviously, but I should be able to go and read some books. Finally, a place that can cheer my spirits and that I’m more accustomed to, I might also be able to figure out where on earth I am.
I strolled over to the quaint entrance of the library as a few other people were entering.
If I have no chance of getting home in time for my test, I may as well settle in here and start anew. I have no problem doing that as I know I’m capable enough, my first issue will be adapting to this place.
Pushing open the doors I was greeted with the homely smell of books, and the earthy aroma of freshly brewed coffee and tea. The inside of the building looked more well-kept than the watch shop from earlier as the wooden walls were cleanly stained rather than chipping, and the tiled floors looked recently polished since they probably cleaned overnight.
I walked over to one of the near shelves, the books spanning from floor to ceiling. How will I ever know where to begin, that's exactly how I expected it to be.
Stepping across the room, I browsed the spines across one of the tall shelves for a while and placed my hand on a book that had taken my interest. The cool leather cover bound to the back of the book felt all too natural to me as I took it out of its space in the wall and the faint vanilla smell of the pages permeated through the air and into my nose.
“I’m going to love it here aren't I?”
Chapter 4
[left]The book I had picked out had the title The History of Magic, as I was intrigued by the unknown of this world rather than general knowledge and history which I could easily figure out over time. Magic was not something I was knowledgeable in so starting off here would be beneficial early on if I am to figure out what to do next.
I walked over to one of the unoccupied lounge chairs making sure to sit away from anyone else so as to not be disturbed.
Not many people were in the library as of present which I had noticed prior to sitting down; the few librarians, a couple browsing the shelves, and about four or five others reading separately. It was still quite early in the day, the clock in the library displaying around 8:30 in the morning when I came in.
Yet still, I don’t know the day, the month, or the year. I should ask someone but that might arise too much attention and suspicion of myself as someone not from here, I’d like to be as anonymous as possible until I start my rise to success.
I picked up the book to read and started to swiftly absorb the information from the pages, stopping once in a while to reflect on what I had read hoping to understand the contents of the book.
In the book, there was a lot I didn’t understand relating to things such as sociology, politics, cultures, different eras and even the gods themselves. A few important points I had figured out though were that magic was natural to this world, being known and used from the beginning of existence here and that it seemed to be taught in the most prestigious schools to those of high class and prestige.
“If it’s still being taught to the high class, why would it be outlawed as a crime, even punishable by death?”
About half an hour into my reading session I put the book down to reflect on what I had read but noticed someone across the room from me, someone I hadn’t seen enter the building earlier or even sit down. Usually, I would notice this as I had been taking note of those entering and leaving whilst I had been reading and figured there were twenty-four people still in the building.
I couldn’t see his face as he was covering himself by reading a newspaper, he was wearing all black clothes that I could see and drinking something with a mug to his side on a table.
After I noticed the mysterious figure, a soft voice came from my right. “Welcome sir, would you like one of our complementary coffees or teas?”
I turned to see one of the librarians standing near and greeting me. She was wearing thinly framed glasses and had copper-coloured hair, much like myself although hers was a tad lighter. There still wasn’t a nametag on her blouse, I don’t think nametags will be commonplace for workers here.
“I’ll have whatever that man over there is having thanks...” I replied.
I looked over to the figure but he had gone from my sight.
“In fact, I’ll just have a tea.” I restated to the librarian, she then left quietly to get it for me. I haven’t had anything to eat or drink since before I studied back at my school's library in my world so I’m glad the drinks here are complementary.
I was about to get back to reading when I caught sight of a familiar face coming into the library, that scruffy-haired pickpocket from earlier and of course he had to spot me too. I guess it’s good that he’s here so I can get my wallet back, but unfortunately, I have to see him again.
“Hey!” Caius tried to whisper but was still loud enough for me to hear as he waved in my direction. All I did was look over my shoulder at him, glaring daggers but not moving an inch away from my book.
He walked over to me and tossed my wallet back as I dropped my book into my lap to catch it.
“There wasn’t any money in it anyways, consider yourself lucky this time.” He cheekily smiled at me.
I checked if there was anything missing or taken, luckily my id and cards were still all there.
“You’re really not from around here are you?” Caius added as he signalled at my wallet and id with just a glance.
“I don’t want you telling anyone.” I said in a slightly aggressive tone, if anyone found out I wasn’t from here, who knows what could happen to see as what happened earlier today. “I’m finished here, I’m leaving.”
I got up and went to go put my book back although Caius was still following me, can’t he just leave me alone?
Standing by the shelf I put the book back and another stranger's voice had to pipe up.
“The History of Magic, written in 1432.”
“Excuse me?” I replied.
“That book is almost 400 years old, you’re not going to find anything except lies in there. The second floor has all the newer books.” The stranger stated, clearly seeing my annoyed face. “Sorry, I was just trying to help. The name’s Zhiff by the way.”
Another nuisance, really? I’ve already had trouble with the first person I met, and now a second?
“Don’t worry, I was just leaving.” I replied to Zhiff.
“That's ok, is he with you?” Zhiff pointed to Caius behind me, clearly trying to tag along for no real reason.
“Not in the slightest.” I responded looking back at Caius’s still chirpy grin.
“Zhiff, we’re leaving.”
The voice that came from across the room was cold yet soft and gentle, like a caring older man who has already experienced life.
“Don’t ruin my day off again.” he continued on.
I looked over at the voice and it was the same mysterious person from before, yet I still can’t see his face as he was facing the library entrance looking to leave.
“Yes, father” replied Zhiff respectfully as he left the bookshelf without continuing our short conversation. They both then walked out of the library and into the distance still without showing his face to me.
That was an interesting encounter, this town may be more fascinating than I thought.
“That was intriguing wasn’t it?” Caius chipped in.
“Yeah, shut up.” I replied as we both walked out of the library and back into the cool morning streets.
