Sealed within his left red eye is the Youma Catoblepas, a fearsome entity that grants him terrifying powers. Anything Tokio looks at has time stopped, and the Catoblepas's so-called Dead-Bringing Eye can drain the life force of anyone who meets its gaze for more than five seconds—the result of a deadly poison carried within the look itself. Because of this, Tokio strongly avoids eye contact, as seen when Miiko attempts to look into his eyes. Under normal circumstances, eye contact alone is not fatal as long as the Catoblepas is not active. However, having inherited leadership of the clan at just ten years old has left Tokio emotionally guarded and hypersensitive to others' presence. Social interaction does not come easily to him. Tokio struggles to deal with other people and is often unsettled when ordinary civilians become involved with Youma affairs—even when he steps in to protect them. In Ghost Fixers, Tokio is shown at age 43, where he works as a homeroom teacher at Mikurigaoka Daisan Middle School, suggesting a calmer and more grounded future for the once-solitary clan leader.
