When was the latest release of Akira that had the 120 chapter format? Even the 38 chapter format seems to have been tossed out with the latest hardcover release that just has the series as six volumes with no chapter breaks at all. I don't know exactly what MAL should do about series like this that have screwed up formatting (although Berserk and One Punch Man are the only other popular ones I know of) but listing 120 chapters seems like the wrong choice.

120 is the number of magazine issue. Though this kind of listing can be often in accurate due to the lack of information and also included bonus chapters. "chapters" as a counter can be often bad due to different single issue chapters being between 10-40 pages or anything else. Volume count is really what people should be looking at and just using the ch counter as a book mark on how far one has gotten.

@AndroidLB So it was never commercially available in English in the format listed on this site? That makes it insanely silly that its listed the way it is. Especially since it was published in tankobon in the early 90s before this site was even thought of.

I know that chapter discussion threads aren't particularly active for legacy media other than like, DBZ, and stuff but this sort of ridiculous numbering bs contributes to it. Akira is popular enough that it would have some discussion but who the hell would have even the slightest idea of what the content of any given chapter is other than the first and last?

It never was split in the Japanies Tankoubon, which is actually exsactly same as the English Kodansha's edition which is hard cover. Mal only cares about Japanese relese, but I've seen mistakes time to time. Like with Berserk a few of the first chapters were released in 2 issues but combined in the volume, this wasn't counted when the manga was marked over. Again I only care about the volume count and ch count is my bookmark and it's compleated when I'm done. They really should let people to set a custom count.

It’s a mistake but due to the series and the mods it’s unlikely they’ll fix it. Officially if a series has no chapter splits in the first release of the volumes the chapter count should be left blank (see Hellbound 2). But MAL rarely follows their own guidelines when filling out entries so there’s a very low chance they’ll actually ever change it.
