In Defense of Megumi Fushiguro
⚠️First of all, this post contains spoilers. If you haven't read the entire series, I recommend you stop reading now.⚠️
I've always been a defender of Fushiguro. I think many people who read the series don't want to, or can't, see beyond the surface. This is understandable, in a way, since it's a fighting shonen manga, where if a character has the potential to be a top fighter, they absolutely must take advantage of their power and use their potential. But what happens if a character deviates from that mold and doesn't use their talent?
Megumi is the deuteragonist of the series and one of the characters with the most potential and talent. This has been made clear on more than one occasion, whether through Sukuna's words, Gojo's, or hints the series itself leaves to show what Megumi can be. But of course, if that's the case, why didn't she advance?
First of all, it's important to clarify that Megumi didn't want to be a sorcerer; he simply wanted to live a normal life. Unfortunately, circumstances led him to a place he didn't want. If it were up to him, he would have lived a peaceful life with his sister. Besides all that, the main reason he followed this path was because his sister was in danger, something he didn't want, and this led him to shoulder a responsibility he didn't want to bear.
Once inside this world, he would obviously seek to become stronger since he was already there, but there's a difference between seeking to become stronger and seeking to be the strongest. An example of this is when he asks Gojo for help training, and Gojo says it's strange that Megumi would ask him for that (implying that Megumi rarely asked Gojo for training).
His entire reason for being a sorcerer vanished in a breath when Meguna (Sukuna in Megumi's body) killed his sister. Being in his body, poor Megumi felt as if he had killed his own sister with his own hands and fell into a deep depression. His reason for living had been taken from him. This was the main reason why, even though Yuji, Yuta, and Rika managed to make the plan work and enter Megumi's soul, he didn't cooperate, and that led to Yuta being cut in two.
Remember this: "There are people who are where they want to be, not where you want them to be." Did he have potential? Yes. Talent? Yes. Power? Yes. But despite all that, that wasn't what he wanted.
So, since Megumi deviated from that prototype of a character with potential who actually uses her power, she's still criticized by some in the fandom because she's not like Yuta or Itadori, for example. But remember, they're different characters, and each one handles their own situation differently.
It's true that her character could have been developed better, but that's a different topic. |
