If you've been into anime for long enough, chances are you've watch an anime in which the subs for different characters have different colors, where special attacks have stylized subs, and so do the OPs/EDs, some even go psycho-mode:

If you watch seasonals, though, chances are you watch it with simple subs ripped from CR or other streaming site in the same day.

This season, I'm currently one week behind in Medalist 2nd Season due to relying on Salchow, as the official subs are dubtitles. Likewise, I'm considering waiting one day to watch Meitantei Precure! and Fate/strange Fake since Saturday is too stacked and I will get fancy subs from Serenae and Kaleido (In fact, Kaleido's are so fancy that MPC-HC stopped working and I switched to mpv).
Contrary to past seasons, however, I'm "suffering from success" on this one, as people on SNS >>>ARE<<< talking about the anime I'm watching.

Is it better to watch stuff the day it releases to talk with everyone else and "be on the loop" or is it better to have a superior experience?

I just wait for the dub usually...
I wanted to watch OPM3 our of sheer morbid curiousity, but I ain't reading all that.

I don't even know which shows are getting multiple sets of subtitles, let alone where to watch them.

What matters is what you consider the superior experience.

I'm ok with whatever comes first. Sometimes I do notice that the subs don't correspond with what the characters are saying in Japanese, but in most cases it's not a big deal. Like when a character says "Sensei..." but in the subs there's a "I'll do my best!", I know it isn't the perfect outcome but it's fine as long as it doesn't completely change the meaning like the infamous localizations making up stuff out of nowhere.

not really on topic, but, man, I made some 'subs' like this for my weekly group's watch of Tsuredure Children and it was such a nightmare.

It's better to have the superior experience. I too am watching Medalist with the Salchow subs. I don't mind waiting. I wasn't going to talk about it with anyone anyway.

Btw "psycho mode" as you call it is called type setting. It's sad that fansubs can do this and official subs often do not.

If I can't watch dub I am okay with basic translation, I will even totally just guess what the text says!
But I do have to say that I came across some really eccentric anime subs and manga translations, that were hilarious.

@GrumbleDango
You can typeset without creating a whole UI with your subs, lol.

I just pirate stuff when available. I understand a lot of raw Japanese should a bad sub exist.

@thewiru Pretty sure that's just the default message composition window for older Nokia models.

@valico
The point is that it isn't in the original anime.
The subbers put that there.

"Meitantei Precure!"

Naaah, you don't need this. Several years ago I tried to get into Precure again after dropping the original when it started airing on RTL2...and yeah, its seasons may have a decent arc here and there (if the villains are interesting enough), but it's mostly a slog with really annoying toy commercial segments which are presented as upgrades, but it's obvious what they are doing with those. (For comparison My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic did that way more subtle and sold a lot of toys.)

This season I made an exception, because of the "great detective" element in the title gave me hope that the formula will be refreshed a bit, but:
1. The characters are so overdesigned in such way that it makes them somehow obnoxiously cute.
2. The detective elements are horrible even for children's show. (For comparison Layton Mystery Tanteisha: Katri no Nazotoki File is a way better meitantei product for this demography, not to mention HanaKana is killing it as Katrielle Layton.)

My conclusion is - Meitantei Precure! doesn't stand out in comparison to the rest of the franchise. Nothing to write home sort of speak. Drop.

"Is it better to watch stuff the day it releases to talk with everyone else and "be on the loop""

1. I don't care much about discussing, just I am impatient person.
2. Not every show will get better subs...my guess is very few will.
3. Some of the official subs are not that bad (till we go full AI with no human editors).

I very much dislike drawing filled shapes on top of non-english signs or messages. Don't care how shiny the typesetting is.

Serenae won't sub metantei, having it official subs she won't bother. Subbers don't sub official releases if there are official subs, the EternalSleeper guy polishing the subs of Zeztz (which I have stopped for now using because he takes too much time for my tastes, but maybe I will use again since the official subs of episode 21 miss an entire sentence, which is insane) is an exception, not the rule. You're waiting for nothing.

@alshu it the same friggin' complain about Kimi To Idol, that it wasn't an Idol show because it didn't have enough Idol thing and the same complain of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid by some random non-fan of Kamen Rider on IMDB, that it had a theme yet it didn't follow suit and it ended with endless fighting. I don't know exactly what you expect, the themes of these shows are just a topping but the fights are what counts. The same with EVERY SINGLE HENSHIN HERO TOKUSATSU MADE FROM THE GEKKO KAMEN MOVIES AT LEAST (which I have watched, at least the first two), henshin heroes of which the Precures are a 1:1 rendition on animated form. The theme is there but it's a complement, not the main thing. I write this as a person who didn't enjoy the first two episodes of Metantei like I enjoyed the Masterpiece that is Kimi To Idol, Kaito Prick permitted. See Zeztz, the theme of dreams is there but it's just a topping, it doesn't go deep nor it tries because it's not what the Kamen Rider is about. The Kamen Rider is about men or (sexy) women in suit fighting between themselves, not about exploring the psyche etc. etc. etc. Even when there is actual social and political commentary like in the case of Toshiki Inoue and Kamen Rider Faiz/Changerion/Tekkoku Mikazuki/Cutie Honey the Live/etc. etc. etc., the fights is where the main meat and potatoes is at. Not the theme.

I don't watch anime as they air so that's not an issue for me, i usually grab the best quality available, which is a BD Remux or BD Encode unless it's been a long time (years) and there are still no BD versions available, in that case i just get the stream version.

So more often than not, it will probably have better subs too.
