Are there more Gary Stu characters or more Mary Sue characters in anime? I don't really pay much attention to these tropes while watching anime so I'm curious.

Gary Stu definition: A Gary Stu is a fictional character, usually male, who is portrayed as unrealistically perfect, competent, and lacking in meaningful flaws or weaknesses.
Mary Sue definition: A Mary Sue is a fictional character, usually female, who is portrayed as unrealistically perfect, competent, and lacking in meaningful flaws or weaknesses.

More Gary Stues for sure, because of the male self-insert power fantasy protagonists.

@Zarutaku male self-inserts are usually in niche isekai or fantasy anime that caters to a specific audience but I think anime of different variety have more mary sue type characters, for example Revy and Roberta from Black Lagoon, Haruhi Suzumiya or Madoka Kaname.

@Zarutaku This lmao. Kirito being a prime example.

(So yeah, to answer the original question of the thread I think there's more Gary-stus.)

Kanroji always kinda gave me Mary-sue vibes. It feels like she is literally perfect with no flaws at least. Also has a weird backstory that gave her that Deviantart OC hair color? Idk man.

@Lentus1 Hmmm Madoka is kinda a tricky one. I can see where you're coming from saying she's a Mary-sue since she is just very kind and doesn't judge others...with quite few/minimal flaws. Her biggest flaw is being self-sacrificing to a fault, which can honestly be perceived as more of a good thing than a flaw.

I would argue that she made some pretty bad decisions during the series, such as rashly throwing Sayaka's soul gem. She's also very cowardly and has pretty low self-esteem. She doesn't listen to Homura multiple times even though it's pretty obvious Homura is trying to help.

Her power level is insane too which can be seen as Mary-sueish,
I guess in the end maybe she is a bit of a Mary-sue, but the show is good enough that it doesn't get ruined by that or anything at least imo.

@Lentus1 don't know about the others, but Haruhi is anything but a Mary Sue. she is a self-centered asshole that nobody likes.

I'd say if you wanna see Mary Sues, look at harem rom-coms. they all have at least one if not more. Sairenji Haruna, Onodera Kosaki, Kitagawa Marin, Yuuki Asuna, Sylphiette, just to name a few. they are all flawless and perfect, kind to and loved by everyone. any "flaws" are usually completely inconsequential nonsense like being bad at cooking or whatever.
based on that, I'd say there are more Mary Sues.

@krautnelson the world literally revolves around Haruhi in that show though.

@Lentus1 yeah, but that's not because of who she is as a person. it's just the premise of the show.

a Mary Sue is someone who is flawless, perfect at everything, and loved by everyone. Haruhi is the exact opposite. she is egocentric and doesn't care about other people's feelings or opinions. her "friends" aren't with her because they like her (for the most part), but because they are forced to by their superiors. Kyon is literally her only actual friend, and even he can't stand her at times, especially when she starts straight-up abusing others.

just because someone is incredibly powerful - or in this case a literal omnipotent god - doesn't mean they are a Mary/Gary. besides, what makes a Mary Sue's overpowered abilties bad writing is how they are used to solve issues. Haruhi's powers are never the solution to any of the problems but almost always the primary cause.

Surely, there's more male MC's to begin with, so the premise already seems skewed.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.
