i have changed my initial ratings of anime/manga after a while many times,
and i do sometimes wonder is it is fair or unfair TO MY PAST SELF who enjoyed it or who chose the certain rating...

the rating was given my myself and yet after a while i think a little different about it...its baffling

are you guys in the same boat ?

I only do that after re-watch (though still very rarely), and it never impacts series I had rated 10, they stay the same.

Ngl, I did that just yesterday. After seeing someone post their thread of The Apothecary Diaries on my tl of twitter, it reminded me off how good s1 was, despite rating s2 higher as a 9. As for s1, it was at a 8.5 (anilist), so I decided to change it to a 8.5 as the enjoyment felt the same, tho there's a high chance that it could change in the future depending on future seasons.

incredibly rare action I only do if the series is truly worth it
Like if a Manga starts off strong and ends terribly, those kinds of situations may justify a rating change

Aftertaste matters a lot. Shows like MHA are fun to watch in the moment, but after a few weeks you look back on it and realize it's a mediocre show with wasted potential, unmemorable villains and bland heroes.
Your past self doesn't exist, only thing that matters is how you feel now about a show.

Your past self doesn't exist anymore, you can't be unfair to someone who doesn't exist.

Most of the anime on my list I watched when I was extremely young, so I imagine if I were to rewatch them now that I'm older, my ratings would most likely change. My mindset has changed a lot as I've grown up so I just see it as a more accurate rating that reflects my maturity now vs then! :)

I think it's fine. You could add a note with the original score and date if you want a reminder of what you used to think about it

Your most recent opinion is the only one that matters, but it would be better to rewatch (at least a couple of episodes) before changing scores.

Tastes change. I remember dropping Spice and Wolf after the first episode and then years later rewatching it and actually enjoying it.

Yes, me too promotes and demotes shows once in a while to be fair to similar shows I've seen in the meantime.

It's not really about "fairness," but more about being honest with yourself. If you gave a rating, accept that that's how you felt about the anime at the time.

I don't like changing the rating later on, for a few reasons:

1. My memory isn't freakishly good, so I don't think I can give a more appropriate rating when I don't remember as much of the anime.

2. Even if I can clearly remember the anime and I'm absolutely sure about my new rating, it'll probably change again as I grow older and watch more stuff. Or even depending on the mood.

3. It's a pain in the butt to regularly go through my anime list and tweak the numbers here and there. And I'll never be fully happy with that list anyway. No matter what, there will always be at least one anime that doesn't look right, and once I fix that, there will be a different anime that looks wrong.

And +1 to "only re-rate when I re-watch."

Sometimes I adjust my ratings a bit but I prefer to do it after rewatching. I don't think it is unfair to my past self and rather a reflection of how my taste changed over time.

I'm most likely to change my ratings a few months after I finished a show once the hype dies down.
