AJA's Anime Industry Report 2025 reveals the overseas market has been witnessing much greater growth compared to the domestic market
The overseas anime market has grown by 126.0% year-on-year, and its expansion has been greatly accelerating ever since 2022. This comes thanks to the worldwide popularization of Japanese anime through global streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney +, and Crunchyroll. According to the data, the overseas market accounted for 56.5% of the overall market size, beating the domestic market by a margin of around 499.7 billion yen (about $3.18 billion USD) once again. This gap has significantly widened compared to the 97.9-billion-yen difference (around $624 million USD) from the previous year.

Not surprising since Japan is a tiny market compared to the rest of the world combined.

I think companies will cater more to the western audience and less to the Japanese audience and anime might even lose its identity and spiciness if it goes too far.

Of course the domestic market isn't growing. Everyone in Japan who might be interested in anime is already watching it.

I mean isn't it normal when it's Japan vs the whole world? Good news, but yeah.

Oh great, that means we'll see dozens more battle shounen. How fun...

That doesn't even make sense, cause battle shounen is already extremely popular in Japan as it is.

If anything this means more experimental or different anime being made.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners was one that most people enjoyed.
Netflix also helped produce shows like Romantic Killer and Pluto
And most of the shows CR helped produce are NOT battle shounen.
Most I'd say are LN adaptation and sometimes you get some great original anime like Odd Taxi or A Place Further than the Universe.

meaning they are gonna start catering to the intl audience more? can't say I'm surprised, but I hope there are at least a few producers that care more about content and creation than making the big bucks

The more the gap grows, the more producers will pander to the international audience instead of the domestic one.

That's why pirating outside Japan can be considered a good thing.
