Why is their toaster on thier table? Yeah, that's really what I was thinking about for half the episode.

WOW What a first episode! The singing and humming female voice was really nice! Calm and sweet, while the battle music was also rocking!

I love this anime so much already!

I was wondering about the toaster on the table as well...

This was a 40min episode with maybe 20min of useful content. Basically, it was dragged out (boring). The slice-of-life junk (school) was intolerably boring. The sci-fi bits were "ok" at best.

Eyeball guy was like "loli transformation, must watch!"

I think I'll give this 2/10 and drop.

Some really choppy animation. Made me feel a bit dizzy.

The father didn't really play very fair did he. It's my dream to move to Hokkaido and become a baker, but if you don't want to go we won't.

I knew absolutely nothing about this anime going on. Seeing the name, I thought it was going to be about figure skating or something. That, and I tend to skip openings to avoid possible 1st episode spoilers, so eh. I kind of thought it was on the right track with the slow slice-of-life drama bit in the beginning, sans the shot of space and what have you. Then we had a horrific fly trap-like alien with teeth and spikes everywhere, superpowered action, a no-magical girl transformation complete with a mature body, and a naked little girl clone at the end.

Sometimes, I just don't know anime.

I was skeptical about the double-length episode idea but I think it proved it by the end; a 20-minute first episode couldn't have included this much characterization of the lead and introduced the fantasy element at the end; some of it would have to go in later episodes and I think starting with it all on the table as prologue before the story proper starts is useful.

Have to say Tsubasa being worried that aliens would take her dog away was very endearing, and even helped her characterization; she feels like her mom and best friend were taken away so I'm sure she was especially upset at the idea of losing the dog, too. He's the one of the few things she likes about Hokkaido

Japanese living habits often revolve around small living spaces so small appliances like toasters may be stored someplace and only brought out for use as needed.

It's a rarity to see hand-drawn cel animation like this in anime after 2000, let alone in 2001. Hence, it makes me wonder if this was among the last of them. Regardless, it makes for some very scenic panning shots of the Hokkaido countryside.

More intriguing yet is that, possibly as a result of being left home alone from her mother dying in childbirth, Tsubasa is observably independent for a ten-year-old kid, making herself a timely fried egg and toast for her breakfast, demonstrating a keen cognisance of timekeeping. She is however, quite shy and demure in the face of an unfamiliar environment; this creates a "fish out of water" scenario in her school, where many of her peers—who are native to the area—presume that her reservedness is born out of a reluctance to acquaint herself with them, rather than a lack of habituation with the new town. An ostensibly unfair perception of her character, but a realistic school scenario that I think many people could empathise with. Still, Tsubasa is agreeable and selfless enough that I can't see this "lepering" lasting the duration of the series.

Will go as far to praise the imposing, flytrap-esque alien as well. Its performance in combat, gaping maw ordained with sharp teeth and guttural growling framed it as a legitimate threat, even knowing it obviously wouldn't kill the protagonist right off the bat. Hoping to see other, similarly monstrous beings throughout.

One of the most impressive first episodes I've ever seen. Nary a flaw to list.

This was truly horrible. I wanted to watch it for the animation factor, but I couldn't even finish the last few minutes of episode 1.
