Hm... the pacing wasn't technically bad, but maybe they could've added some sad music or something to intensify the mood. Overall, pretty awesome episode, brought back some good memories I had of this anime.

I think this was a lot better done than the first series to be honest. Kind of makes me wonder if some are just looking at the first series with nostalgia glasses or something.

I like the idea that, despite all their abilities, that, as Ed stated it, they couldn't "Save one little girl" it just adds a sort of "this world is bigger than you" kind of feeling. It also encompasses the overall theme of growing up that pervades this series as well.

I still remember first reading this in the manga and getting freaked out, I thought that it was pulled off quite well in this episode. It still made me feel incredibly sad for Nina.

This episode made my heart drop. Incredibly sad. Some dark stuff in this episode. Well, he got what he wanted in the end and because of that, he died. Was kinda hoping that the Nina dog would return to normal after later episodes (like if they ever get the stone), but that assassin dude made that impossible. But then again, it's kind of a good thing she died too, otherwise, I guess it'd be too cliché? At any rate, liking thing anime a lot.

Damn same fucked up sad story like in the original only more compact! Still very sad to see that picture before me! I do wonder how the rest of the story will proceed with how they're making these first couple episodes more compacter! And how Scar already killed the father from nina, will he come back like in the original or how will that develop?

Either way great episode with strong story but a sad story... Let's see what's next!

for some reason Gran get's killed too easily :

he at least put up a fight(though he kinda got killed to easy too)

so it's the same as the first season except this one Gran is not the boss of tucker and he dies along with Nina by Scar. effectively killing his role to any future developments(in the first season he had a kinda big role towards the end)

and yes i am happy he dies on the manga while in the first season he locks himself from everything in the world.

not to mentioned they only put tucker in house arrest instead of in jail.

pretty fucked up whenever i see Nina on that state :(

i think the reason shy it's not more impact as the first one is because they didn't show alot of time spend on Nina and the brothers.

in the anime it took 3 episodes just to end this arc, while here all it took was one.

Ed had already become a state alchemist where in the first season he was just studying there to pass the state alchemist exam.

they also change Tucker and Scar's voiced as well as most of Roy's subordinates.

why T_____T

they were perfect :P

can't wait to see more scar battles ^^

o.o the whole Yoki part was just mentioned and not shown, sorta just brushed past, I really wonder how this is gonna be put into 64 episode, even more than the Original's 51 eps seeing how fast things are going. And Tucker is for sure whole lot insane in Brotherhood than the Original, can't help but compare them :P And O.O!!! Scar KILLED Tucker, that wasn't expected. That didn't happen in the Original :OOO! Similar beginning, but I think things are finally gonna take a DIFFERENT route from the Original starting now lol!

Not as sad as the original FMA when this happened; maybe coz it was rushed, lol.

Still, not a bad episode~
yeah I agree, it was definitely lots more dramatic in the Original. Sadder as a result

Holy shit, poor Nina :( Such a cute and nice girl is sacrificed by her father she loves so much.
That asshole really deserved to die but I guess it would have been better to sit in jail for the rest of his life, coming to his senses in some years and then being really depressed over what he did to his daughter.

I don't get the complaints about pacing. I mean, yeah, they skipped over the coal town things, but the rest of the episode was paced pretty much the same as the manga. I'm amazed at how closely it follows, even down to a lot of the same visuals.

I hated the idea of watching this episode, and it was really rough, because the whole time, I was anticipating what I'd seen in the manga. Poor Nina.

Looking forward to the next episode.
Your mean should be an even bell curve only if you watch every show that comes out. Having a high-slung mean doesn't mean you're rating improperly. It can also mean you're selecting shows well to watch mostly things you enjoy.

Wow, this episode really felt like it was written by an edgy 14 year old. It had an okay premise, but the whole thing fell apart about halfway through with too much melodramatic bullshit. I'm giving this show three more episodes to save itself, otherwise. DROPPED.

This was the episode that made me fall n love with FMA:B *sigh*~

I love it was anime makes me 'feel' something (even better if it's somethig other than happiness or sadness) so it was a nice suprise when I found myself seriously hating on one character in particular. Grrr Tucker!!! *sticks tongue out*

Is it just me, or does everything seem rushed as hell so far? It's like the writers wrote this assuming the viewer has already watched the 2003 series. The way it skips detail is almost as of they were afraid of repeating themselves too much. You know, cut to the chase, summarize the events up to where the original series actually followed the manga, then give the series room to grow and develop as it should. Unfortunately, this makes it feel like all the events which felt really climatic in the original series have no impact. The reason behind the Elric brothers' attempt at human transmutation, Ed's acceptance as a state alchemist, the death if Basque Grand, and the "Nina event" as well. I dunno, I would've preferred if the writers fleshed these scenes out more, even if it meant repeating themselves longer. I'd rather an 80 episode series that feels complete rather than a 64 episode one where the beginning is rushed just because they're afraid of repetition.

Anyway, aside from that, I prefer what the original series did with Shou too.

I feel Scar is going to be a very annoying character. The Iron Blood man was awesome, too bad I knew at the beginning of the episode he was going to die right away. His abilities were cool. The Nina thing... Holy crap, creepy as hell. I felt like crying. Ninaxander chimera looked so macabre.
Never read the manga, wanted to start watching FMA1 but then found out that FMA:B was closer to the original story so decided to go with that one first. So I'm not at all familiar with the characters or further story. Kind of like it so far.

They did a better job with this episode. The way it shows how Nina still loves her father in the scenes where he was getting beaten up by Ed and killed by Scar even though he did such a horrible thing to her and the dog :'( Compared to FMA where the only thing the Nina-Alexander chimera would say was "Edward" so it wasn't as strong of an emotion carried out to the viewers. Brotherhood made it talk more.

Scar looks like a grandpa in this version and fuck that Tucker!... I really despise that bastard.. Nina was the cutest! shes like.. the perfect daughter! I thought I wouldn't feel sad anymore because I already watched this in the 2003 version.. but fuck!! I felt sad even more ..watching this in the new version that the first. Damn it NINA!!!! good thing Tucker died.. I found it ridiculous because in the 2003 version that he became a chimera too and tried to resurrect Nina.. which makes no fucking sense.

I was warned before that this version of the series speeds through the start, but I didn't think it would go on for this long. Things need to calm down a bit here and character development has to come back a bit more. This whole Nina story was farrrrr more dramatic and emotional on the original series. The pacing just wasn't good here, and Edward's character feels off in some way - like he isn't as interesting as he was in the original.

That can't be because of nostalgia as I only finished the original series a month ago. Hopefully the reason for all of this bad pacing is that they expect you've already seen it, so these episodes almost serve as long - WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME - sessions.

Overall so far: Impressive visuals (except for how Edward's face seems to have been drawn in like 4 different manners up til now), Unimpressive character development and story treatment.

I never thought this anime would be so dark. Even though there's humour, it's gory and there's so many feels. I really do like the anime so far, it's made quite a good start but I'd like to see it improving.

For some reason the Chimera wife made me really sad because she kept saying she wanted to die.

so far i like fma better than this,
and since i watch the english dub, al's new voice is disappointing

the pacing is too fast,
i like fillers apparently,
and i've never read the manga so i have no problem with the original's story,
this one might end up having a better story,
but i feel like im going to prefer 2003 over it,
we'll see though,
it's too early to tell

Tears every time. Especially when the chimera talks.

I sound like a broken record, but it was much more emotional in the first series. The excuse "they're just rushing because it was shown in FMA" is not enough. This series is meant to stand alone from FMA.

Thankfully I know it gets better later on, when comparisons aren't able to be made. But it makes me curious how the two versions would compare if FMA HAD followed the manga; I feel like the darker and slower pace of the original would be the fan favourite.
