I finished watching this recently, and was a bit disappointed. It was full of brilliant ideas, but the execution wasn't so great -- actually, a lot of it was downright boring. I still enjoyed it overall, giving it a seven, and I'm going to start Legend of the Twilight soon.

oh, these little earthquakes

it's one of my favourite anime ^.^ watched it twice already. i really liked the atmosphere (supported with an amazing soundtrack) and the characters in it.

@AnomalousOne: i wouldn't recommend Legend of the Twilight (the anime). imo it's a "take everything out that made .hack/sign special, add lots of chibi characters and lots of jokes which aren't really funny" anime. the manga .hack//Legend of the Twilight on the other hand is very cool.
.hack//Legend of the Twilight the anime is just another manga adaption failure!!!

It really disappointed me. It started off interestingly, then got really slow (from what, ep 5-15 or so?) and picked up again toward the end, only to conclude really poorly. I expected a lot more from it. :\

I just finished watching it and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The ending was a little confusing at first. But once it was over I realized it was probably one of my favorite animes =D

.Hack//Legend of The Twilight was the first anime I ever completed. I don't know what to think of it, now that I think about it. It's on a 7, but I'd probably lower the score to a 5 if I re-watched it.

.Hack//Sign was an interesting watch. Other than the ending.. it was quite mysterious, had good character development and some awesome music.

It was so... awkward... I mean, I remember watching it every week, and I was like "yeah this has a cool theme" and stuff like that, I spend alot of hours on MMO's so I thought the whole setup was cool, but as I was watching it, I couldn't ignore that little voice in my head that kept saying... "WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON!?!?!?!?!?"

Well, .Hack//sign's ending was supposed to end in a mystery.

Unless of course you pick up the games (.hack//infection->mutation->outbreak->quarentine). Then it ends with the final episode "unison".

I loved it! It was confusing I'll admit but I watched it twice in a row and then it mostly made sense. I don't see where people thought it dragged on... I suppose the lack of action annoyed people but I like depressing non-action based things so I didn't really miss the action. The music is wonderful... ^__^

This anime turned me from not knowing anything about World of Warcraft into pre-ordering it and playing it from release in November 2004.

I wish I had never watched it. Can I have my 4 years back please?

I loved it. I can really sympathize with Tsukasa, so i found the plot and the end really interesting and as other people have mentioned the soundtrack is amazing.

Also .hack//SIGN has the best minor character in an anime ever, A-20. What a legend ^___^

1. Why was Tsukasa chosen to be the one to awaken Aura?

I don't think there is any real answer. It was simply fate if you can accept that.
2. I though Morganna (the female voice-thing) was the one who collected data to eventaully awaken Aura, and then her essential being would be erased after aura waking up. How did Tsukasa get control of this process and why didn't Morganna get erased after Aura awakened?

Another intresting question. I don't know if this is ever explained further into the .hack franchise but my best guess is that Morgana is a virus AI program and she mutated avoiding the vaccine (Aura). Another possiblitiy is that a fragment of the program surived and was able to mutate My best guess I really am not sure.

3. How was Tsukasa able to log out in the end?

Aura had awaken, Morgana's control had ceased, Tsukasa was able to regain mental stability.

My thoughts, this is my all time favorite Anime. It's very much more a pure "mystery" not so much an action/adventure/thriller we are so accustomed too.

Just one word: B-O-R-I-N-G. I wouldn't mind the almost complete lack of action if the dialogues actually made some sense. All they do is just talk, talk, talk and you're like WTF? This anime for me is like The Bold and the Beautiful on crack and I can't imagine anyone suffering through this more than once.

I gave it a 7 only because of the music.

Sign was more of an unique kind of anime. You will either like it or hate it, their really isn't any middle ground. It dealt more with character interaction in and outside the "World" than anything else. It was all how they wanted to help Tsukasa free herself from the "World" and find the key. And it moves very slowly. The music was superb as well as the art.

It told the story of how Tsukasa was hurting emotionally because of all the abuse and negative psychological affects that went with it. It was how she slowly was getting over that with the help of Subaru and the others. And getting her life in order. I really like how Bear offered to be her guardian as well.

The only part i really hated was the ending. Helba just abandons that part of the Net Slum field and then Tsukasa is then free and its all over. That and were left to believe that Sora is dead. Its like WTF. With all this build up there should have been more to that last boss battle. They should have fought that beast and destroyed it then Helba could have gotten them out of there. And then it could end. But at the very end we see that Morganna is still there. Its like was anything really solved?

All in all i give it a 9. Its an unique story style that i haven't seen before and it was an interesting journey so to say.
Personally i prefer .hack//legend of the twilight over .hack//sign

Well, I watched it only cause of Kajiura Yuki's music so it could not disappoint;) But overall this anime is slow-paced, VERY talkative and missing good action. Characters are plain, because we CAN'T see more of their real life that could have been pretty interesting! So only music was flawless;)

Pah this wasnt meant to be an action series...the characters are actually pretty well rounded...and the real life part wasn't added much because they were IN A GAME...it focuses on the story, the resolution and overall compassion of people wanting to help others out when they need it the most.

As shown by the fact that I gave this a 10 and put it in my top 5 list, I love this anime. I can certainly understand why not everyone would like it, but I love slow-paced anime like this, as shown by my other favorites (well, apart from Death Note).

I'm probably biased towards the series because it's the one that really got me into anime, but still.

I agree. I love the .hack series as a whole (games, anime & manga) but separately they can be really confusing, maybe that's why there are some haters of the series. Either way, as you watch all the anime and play the games and read the manga pieces of the puzzle start to fit together. It's a bit tedious, but totally worth it. :3

I like the fact of it being related to MMORPG's even tho they kinda fail on that aspect; there's no emphasis on game aspects such as lvl, higher gear, new skills or quests (being The World a place without a Goal that isn't surprising actually) they focus more on bounds between the characters and feelings across their minds. Also i got disappointed that we didn't get to see them getting closer to each other in real life, but the mere fact of it being based on a MMORPG already makes it alot of fun for me.

Then there's the OSTs, which are great.

The story itself could be a little better, specially if they took a few more episodes to explain a few things and possibly introduce a few more characters such as Orca or Balmung (who we barely saw), but i didn't dislike it :)

Underrated as fuck. Whenever I think of this anime I think about SAO, Log Horizon and all the other generic lame ass virtual reality anime that can't equal up to this but it's rated WAY higher. Seriously though this series should be MUCH higher. There's hundreds of H-titles rated higher... you know that's messed up.
