I remember my early days watching new anime on the internet being on YouTube. Back when they use to have episodes of One Piece and Zatch Bell! in 3-part chunks on youtube. I remember the kind of wordy subs, with an extensive vocabulary attached to them. There are still a certain amount of words I only know because they were used in this old fansubs from back in the day. That was definitely a rewarding experience.

What is your memory of the early internet and the anime you've seen on it?

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

I think it might have been a season of Digimon I couldn't find on TV which lead me to starting to watch anime subbed online. I am not sure though.

Akasaka. Definitely watched it on a pirated streaming site, as I did with around five or six other anime before switching to MPV.

I watched Pokémon episodes online, my region's Cartoon Network programming wasn't up to date with the episodes so I started to search for the English dubbed episodes.

Streaming didn’t exist, and torrents were pretty new and not widely used by fansubbers quite yet, so my earliest internet anime were downloaded on IRC. I’m not 100% sure of the very first one, but a handful of the early ones were Fruits Basket, Angelic Layer, Chicchana Yukitsukai Sugar, Getbackers, Takahashi Rumiko Gekijou, Onegai Teacher, Shingetsutan Tsukihime, D.N.Angel, and Ningyo no Mori (TV version).

A lot of people fondly/not-so-fondly remember watching episodes in multiple parts on YouTube, but this isn’t something I ever experienced. Once I realized I could use the internet to get anime, I jumped into downloads right away. IRC was a pain, and it was slow, but it was the only option at the time, so it didn’t feel like a big deal. And after so many years of having to get anime from a bunch of random sources (TV, buying and renting tapes, Netflix, VHS fansub distributors, bootlegs from eBay, etc.), I was ecstatic to finally be able to watch virtually any anime I wanted to.

I don't remember the details, but probably the ones that got me into anime, which was either Sword Art Online or Railgun.

I specifically remember anticipating each episode of SAO and downloading them from some kind of website. For some reason i suddenly found myself watching it, probably as coping mechanism for miserable college life, some kind of escape.

Railgun on the other hand, primarily accompanied me when i was recovering at home after surgery.

@Xavion SAO is so overhated, first season was so good especially if you played mmorpg games back then

"Which anime did you first watch on the internet?"

I think it was The SoulTaker - https://xss.now.cc/anime/1048/The_SoulTaker__Tamashii-gari

That's before YouTube was even a thing.

The idea of fansub sounded revolutionary to me.
- Translating and distributing anime which would never air on european TV...well, this particular anime aired later on german TV (which I got via cable).
- With cool fonts and effects for the subs.
- For free on internet...

Also the first anime to impress me with its initial episodes, than nosedive as production values and plot, but coming back with animation bump for the final (the story was still lacking tho).

It was Bleach around when I was at 1-2nd grade at primary school, the episodes took eternity to load, there were maybe around 120-140 episodes out back than, I had on my notebook written down by my classmate whom recommended me to watch Bleach, a whole URL into an illegal site with Polish subs as such thing as Messenger wasn't a thing. I was watching there Bleach TYBW cour 1 as just when cour 2 was about to come out, the site has been sold and now it is with 0 episodes and acts like an journal/info/data for anime titles.

Hmm, back in the early to mid 2000s I was watching a lot more western cartoons still, but I do remember going on YouTube around 2005/6 to watch that banned Porygon episode. Also pretty sure I was looking up FLCL online too at the time after seeing it on Adult Swim.

My friend first showed me some episodes of Naruto and Gakuen Alice online.

The first series I watched fully was Hoshi no Kirby on youtube. I watched the episodes in poor quality without subtitles sometimes. I also watched Soul Eater and Kuroshitsuji soon after.

First anime that I've watched on the Internet were Familiar of Zero and Midori Days, both on YouTube. I remember the time when the episodes were split into 3 parts from YouTube videos, maybe because the uploaders didn't have access to uploading videos longer than 10 minutes? I honestly don't remember.

I vaguely remember Crunchyroll being a website where I could watch anime for free(?) because that's where I watched Clannad back in the day.

I watched One Piece first on TV, then I followed the next episodes on the Internet. And then the rest is history. x)

Naruto Shippuuden

Some time between 2010-2012 when Naruto was still airing on TV, after the Pain-Arc I desperately wanted to know how things continued.
Thats when I started to look things up on the net and opened the floodgates.

After that I continued to watch just a few more anime like Death Note.
I completely lost it when SAO came out in 2012, watching and rewatching stuff over and over again every single fucking day, haha.
