bc now that i look back at a lot of the shoujo anime i used to watch i would score em all significantly less than what i did back then, i used to give out 10s to every other anime bc id rate it right after id watched it n id be all hyped and 'OMG YESYESYES 10 OUTTA 10 FOR SURE' but most of those now would be like a 5 for me ngl, ig it might be bc my preferred genre has changed from romance to action or smth but yeah, im js not gonna rate anything for now bc i make the absolute worst decisions n now i dunno which ratings to stick w bc 10 yr old me would say that those shoujo ones r a masterpiece but to me now they're js bleurgh🧍🏻‍♀️how do u ppl decide what to rate an anime anyway, do u base it off the plot, the animation, character development, ending, orrrr-?? n do u ever change the rating u give an anime/manga after a while or do u decide to js keep it the same as the first time u rated it 🥲

This. I regularly change the rating I've given to a show after a couple months. Sometimes I even rewatch shows just to confirm my iitial impressions.

People grow and change, and so do ratings. It's silly to think a childhood favourite would still have the precisely same impact on a person when they are older.

I do agree that it's fine to change your rating and that it's natural to some degree

However, I'll also say this

However bad your ratings are, it can be much worse

I used to have this dilemma bc a lot of the anime i watched was when I was 10 and decided to rate all of it in a week solely based on memory (the ones I had a least bit of memory of) when I was like 16. So now 5 years later I just recently decided to put the year I last rewatched it in by the notes and that way I won’t feel as bad when I find out the anime I watched 10 years ago with one surviving crumb of a memory by now that also has forgotten indescribable horrors in it is rated above a 1. A ikki tousen fan was the thing that pushed me over the edge to do this btw lol💀

Very rarely I'd change my rating, perhaps after I take a look on others' take to reassess my evaluation and depends on how I feel about that anime after rewatching it.

I consider myself to be real bad at it, too.

It's not necessarily an age thing either. I was already in my 30s when I started watching, and now I don't agree with some of my ratings from back then. Like you say, tastes change, it's just how things go.

I don't see the point of going back to change those ratings, though. It's a snapshot of my feelings back then, and it's not like I rate them "accurately" so that I can show them off to anyone. And I don't feel comfortable re-rating something based on my vague memory of the anime from years ago. I would only update those ratings if I re-watch them.

Yes, I've definitely changed lots and lots of ratings over the years. I would probably say that I've changed almost every rating on my list, but nowadays it rarely happens because I've already "accommodated" to my taste and I have a much larger sample size of shows to compare the new ones. If you have the time and you want to I would suggest that you remodel your entire rating list until you are satisfied (that is at least what I would do because I'm pretty obsessive about these things). The simple thought of knowing that "I'm not sure" about my ratings would not let me sleep lol. If you actually go on and do it I would suggest starting with the 10s and working your way down.
Also remember that everyone rates differently. My main way of rating is comparing the "emotional impact" that the shows had on me, but other prefer to focus on pure entertainment value, what the show meant to them and that specific time, greatly written characters, etc.

Rating is overrated, no pun intended.

I just throw a number on anything I finish out of habit. It was mostly done because when I first registered, I thought one had to give something a score to add it to the list. If I’ve actually sat through watching some shit for over 4+ hours and completed it, I probably thought it was worth watching in the first place.

Anything I drop doesn’t get a score at all, doesn't even make it in my list, especially if it was only a single episode or something I never really tracked properly. And there’s also older shit that I watched over two decades ago... I never kept track of the episodes back then, so I just leave them be, till maybe one day, if I actually get bored enough, will hunt them down on physical discs to give a proper viewing experience again.

You don’t have to rate anything to be honest some things I just left unrated because it didn’t leave any particular impression or I forgot to review it later- either way this website is just about keeping track of what you watched and “what do you think?” as the ratings. The number you chose is what you thought so that’s also why I find it interesting to just go through peoples profiles and see

It’s just you and your numbers

Bro, you're worrying about the most insignificant thing in the world. Who cares about ratings on this site? Besides, you can always change them when you update your tastes. XD

For some time now, when rating anime, I've been considering mainly how the plot is written and how a given anime presents its themes. Then I look at the characters, animation, music, and how the anime stands out from others.

An equally important aspect is the fun factor; it will always be a +1 or -1 to the rating.

I didn't know you were back from your MAL hiatus, welcome back.

I ran into the same problem on a more severe level when I created my account and started adding everything I had watched so far. My account is barely a year old but I started watching anime online around 2010-2011. I tried to rate everything based on how much I remember and how much I'd enjoy it nowdays. This is, of course, inaccurate and sometimes I adjust my ratings a bit. I plan to rewatch a few of the shows I really liked back then and find out if they still hold up to this day.

In general my rating is solely based on personal enjoyment and the feelings it invokes in me. I don't break down a show into animation, plot, character writing, etc. because isolating these parts is not really constructive. Also depending on the type of anime some are way more relevant than others. Sometimes I adjust socres after some time.

I don't think you have to take scoring so seriously. Your score does barely affect the overall score of an anime. And I've seen so many bad ratings. Even if yours end up being bad you would be in good company. However I do think revising your rating is important. They are a representation of your taste. If they are completly outdated it is more difficult to find people with similar interests.

PS: I'm still waiting for the school essay you promised to write in the way you wrote some of your older posts

Just base it off on how you liked it, if you rewatch and feel different about the anime just change the rating. Your taste will change and as you encounter more and more anime you get a better comparison. It’s normal to rate the first anime high, since everything was new, you didn’t know the tropes or couldn’t compare the anime with a similar one. I think personally rating off anime too objective points is not helpful on such a site. The list is to see which anime YOU like and not which anime objectively where good. So don’t stress too much about it
Don't mind me, just vibing here ^_^

Regardless of what score I give when I complete an anime, I avoid changing scores until I rewatch or read the source material, since my taste and judgement in anime changes over time.

What I might have given a 10/10 5-6 years ago may only be a 9 or 8/10 today if I actually watch it now, but I'm not gonna change it because there is no need unless it's warranted during my rewatch.

Stick with what you gave at the time and be true to yourself.

If you only have 47 completed, it's perfectly doable to rewatch them all and give them a proper rating.

Maybe there's no need to change the rating. Because you rate the anime in correspondence to how much you like it. If there was a time when you thought this was a 10/10 anime, then there would probably be more people that would like the said shoujo the same way.

Anyways, we don't want cake haters to rate Clementine cheese cake. it would be better if another cake enthusiast rates the said cake. So you now changing the rating is a disservice to the anime that you had once enjoyed.

For me I rate anime according to how much I enjoyed it while I was watching it. So the rating the future me would give is not as important.

Echoing all the ones saying it perfectly okay to update scores if your feelings changed.
Just remember your list is all about your FEELINGS. You're not a pro Reviewer trying to give advice if someone should watch something, you're just giving your opinions. If a show is mediocre on a technical level, but you still adore it to absolute bits, it's okay to give it a high score. Always follow you heart. :)

@Hiyajo-san FINALLY FOUND IT, gang this is js a part of the entire essay, like sure if u want the rest that's chill w me but this is prolly devastating enough to read 💀😭✋️ lmaooo, anywho here u r, this is word for word so yes i wrote these abbreviations n left spaces between letters etc, tried taking a pic of my teacher's comments but her writing's too small anyway 😭😭 I had to think of this stuff on the spot bro, was not prepared to rant in gen a help lolll, my revision was so different 😭🙏

ahem so

'How is Shylock presented in Act 1 Scene 3 of 'The Merchant Of Venice'?' (40 marks)
Right so in this extract, Shylock's lwk a complex character ngl, there were some crazy insults he had to endure like whaddaya mean some dude can js come n 'spit on [his] Jewish gaberdine' goddamnnn n the fact that he's called a 'cut-throat dog' n 'misbeliever' is js j e e z so obviously my guy entered his villain era bc that's enough of a backstory for anyone to have a crazy desire for revenge, the bigotry Antonio showed was so eugh bro, was not expecting that from the main character at all *retches* disappointing frfr. But aaanywho, it's prolly easiest to tell how i n s a n e l y mad he is tho when he's all like 'Hath a Jew not eyes?' cuz he faces em all head-on, confronting the prejudice that Salarino n Salanio have. His lines 'If u prick us, do we not bleed? If u tickle us, do we not laugh? If u poison us, do we not die? And if u wrong us, shall we not revenge?' like bro even reading that has me baffled, poor guy js wanted to be treated equally yk, cuz he ain't no monster- looks decent enough despite the wrinkles. Honestly i feel like the ppl watching this play back in the old days woulda been speechless too, like it'd be some moment of realisation for everyone cuz it shows the shared experiences they all have. The repeated questions r like a POW POW POW, abt time they realised that Antonio n the lot n anyone with a mindset like em r all js a bunch of hypocrites n bc of them Shylock's become one hell of a bitter person. Like yeah he begged for empathy but then b a m, he mentions revenge. All the hate js got to him bro, so time to double it n give it to the next person.

Still can't believe I actually wrote this for an end of yr exam 😭😭

Nothing wrong with shoujo, but you need to try giving more realistic ratings to begin with, if everything is a 10, then a 10 is meaningless.

I have a lot easier of a time rating movies on Letterboxd than I do rating anime here. I tend to be more critical when I'm sitting down and watching a movie in one sitting compared to watching a whole series over a period of time. I sometimes struggle with what to rate Western tv shows for the same reason. Rating individual episodes on IMDb is a good way to break it up sometimes. I think part of it is that in a movie, one scene could completely change how I perceive it, but with shows, there's so much more of a time investment that it becomes harder to rate as a whole. Not to mention, nowadays I usually watch shows over a period of time rather than binging them, so that gap can make me less decisive compared to watching a movie all at once.

If I ever start doubting an old rating I gave something, revisiting it through clips, recaps or rewatches can also help. At this point, I think I've rated too much stuff to worry about the accuracy of each one, but sometimes I'll adjust it as needed when I come across them.

Only change if you want your ratings to always reflect exactly what you think about them at any given moment - but that's not sustainable as your list gets bigger and bigger with time. I'd just let my ratings reflect what I felt when I rated it. Just because it doesn't align with my tastes now doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it one day, so it's like giving your younger self some credit. I do the same with books - rated Divergent a 5/5 back when I read it in middle school, little me loved it back then. I wouldn't go and change it now.

Im the same way, my rating scale has changed over time and fluctuates based on my mood, plus there's a lot of shows that I loved when I was younger that I know I could never rewatch because I wouldn't like them now that I've become harder to impress. If I'm bored I'll sometimes go back and switch scores for anime I've seen based on how I feel about them now or how I think I would feel about them now, but I'll usually end up flipflopping since it's been so long since I've seen most of them

In general enjoyment and art are the main factors to my score: in my opinion all other elements of a show such as story, animation, characters, falls into that category (since if it's a well written story I'll appreciate that and enjoy it more) but also I kind of just do it based on vibes. It's just a number rating an anime it's not that deep, if you're not a professional critic/reviewer it doesn't have to be an overly complicated multidimensional rating system like some people do...it's fair to just give it a number based on feelings lol.
