Do you think it's possible for a solar storm to destroy the internet and leave everyone without internet and other technologies?

If that actually happens, it would be a terrible mess.

yes super solar storm can make global blackout and the recovery will take months or years so a lot of people will die especially during extreme weather months due to global warming too heck hospitals are gonna be the worst affected place, and generators will be useless since like you implied electronics will all be fried so they need to be replace

There actually are some servers in deeply shielded bunkers. You have more to worry about your own computer. One major weak point of the internet is actually a cable at the bottom of the ocean that could become physically severed so solar flares are not the only risk.

I've actually one day witnessed a bunch of solar lights flash during the day at the same time a solar flare hit.

Are these ocean cables found all over the ocean?

It's a single cable bundle. It wouldnt take down the internet but it would cut off continents from eachother on it.

That could happen very easily, in fact. You are crazy to think it can't happen.
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

Yea, I agree with @deg. Solar storms (huge ones) are worse than a mere Internet loss. Satellites are affected, which means the military is. Anything related to electricity, especially electromagnetism is in danger. So planes won't take off and communications across long distance will be hard. For a while, life will have to be local, although vans can still do transportation for necessary goods (food, meds) to isolated areas.

I'm sure countries have the necessary stuff for minimal security but bunkers and ocean cables seem like isolated cases to me, they're not networks by themselves. A good reference point in time is the 18th century if you want to imagine how we'll have to live from now, albeit medical advances.

I'll be honest, I'm not too sure on this as I haven't checked the facts so I'll say maybe. I know solar storms fuck up a ton of electronics so I can a scenario like the internet getting toasted as a possibility

Oh, absolutely! Just imagine a solar storm so powerful that it sends us all back to the Stone Age, where the only buffering we knew was waiting for the smoke signals to clear! 😄
We'd have to trade our memes for cave paintings and our tweets for carrier pigeons. But it wouldn't be all bad. We will rediscover the lost art of face-to-face conversation, paying with cash and the thrill of reading an actual book. So, if a solar storm could give our tech a cosmic timeout, it just be the universe's way of telling us to unplug and enjoy the analog life for a bit!

Yes, it can happen, but I don't think it will happen, at least not in the near future.

I remember the internet saying it would happen in 2021, then 2024, then 2025, etc. It's just misinformation meant to spread panic and worry.

If this happened, the world would recover relatively quickly. The corporations involved are extremely powerful and wealthy. They're not just going to say OK bye and give up everything. They'll rebuild and it will be profitable af! Reminds me of when historically war and post-war fuels economies and certain businesses. Developed countries can also handle a loss of up to 50% of their infrastructure - the vast majority of our infrastructure was made before internet and are things you take for granted like roads and water pipes.

It would be the Year of the Aurora!! 🤩

The economy and system would be permanently devastated, but you'd have your PCs and phones back eventually. I imagine many sites and games wouldn't return.

More concerned about the competency crisis. All our brilliant minds who would have inherited the role of maintaining the infrastructure aren't going to for many reasons (not their faults).
