I went in expecting a old-fashioned ninja movie and I pretty much got that but with a lot of Vampire Hunter D vibes with how unusual the a lot of the enemies were. There was action all around but it wasn't really satisfying enough for me to fully enjoy the film though. It could've been a lot better with the story and execution but it's still good anyway.

I expected much much more from this film considering the top notch animation and character design. The plot was boring and the characters unlikable. Aside from some action scenes, it really was not a good movie.

Is this the best anime I've ever seen? No. Does it have the best story, character design, music, background art, etc? Also no. Now, having gotten that out of the way, I'll say that it will always be a personal favorite due to how I originally saw it.

In 1994 and 1995, I was going to a college with a lot of Japanese exchange students. I was a tutor and ended up tutoring many of the Japanese students in English. I became pretty good friends with a guy name Yoshi. He had recorded this movie on a VHS tapes & brought it to America with him. After my tutoring duties were over one night, several of us went to Yoshi's dorm to hang out. I didn't understand much Japanese and had no idea what was being said when this movie was first put in. Yoshi was stoned out of his mind and narrated the entire movie for me.

I fell in love with anime that night. I'd already seen a few movies like Akira and Vampire Hunter D plus some older TV series like Speed Racer, but I'd never been blown away by any of them like I was by Ninja Scroll.

After this movie was released on VHS in the US, I bought it and watched it in English for the first time. That VHS copy got worn out. I've also owned this on DVD and Blu-ray. Any time someone asks my opinion of where to start if they want to get into anime, I point them to this movie because it's where I started.

Aside from many action clinches, the story was surprisingly decent and direction and pacing-wise serious improvement from the director's previous film overall was one heck of a entertainment!

Saw this back in 2006, this is my first re-watch. Full of action, no boring moment. The MC is probably one of the most likable bad ass in anime. All the characters were interesting, and I didn't feel like they needed more time. I think people feel that way because they're used to battle shounen TV series where there's plenty of time to develop each villain. I liked that they had 8 of them in the movie because it left the feeling that the MC might not be able to defeat them all in time, with him being poisoned and under a time limit.

This is the standout anime between 1990-1994, imo. Those years were a little lacking.

ya, the animation is brilliant, I'd re-watch this film for the way it's animated and directed :) Direction is pretty good too, it's a stylish film.. The character design is so good, one of the best..
I too had expected more, it could've been such a great film if it were not for the dilution of plot with same old repetitive formula and convenient turn of event.. I have some questions, like how did Jubee escape Yurimaru, how did Zakuro trap him? and the gore felt a little too much.. anyway, wish the script was as good as direction-animation but it's not that bad.. It's a good film overall.. I like the ending song..

Here, a music video capturing the beauty of this movie :)

Reminded me of Katanagatari which is good. Overall a solid movie and I'm glad it was more engaging than Wicked City. I could definitely also see some of Kawajiri's style from the samurai episode of The Animatrix, a plus considering how on point it was. Overall, not quite as gratuitous as I was expecting, but after Wicked City, that may be a good thing. 7/10

I feel a bit mixed on this anime. On paper, it's exactly the opposite of everything I like in anime. But I'm trying to branch out a bit more and try things I don't usually watch. That said, I mainly watched this film in particular because I recently watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and absolutely LOVED it so I wanted to try out other films by the same director.

It certainly looks stylish, I really liked the art style and I thought it had a lot of creativity. Some of the dialogue was really cheesy and full of clunky exposition. Some scenes were...uncomfortable to watch. It's certainly a product of the early 90s. I doubt this would fly nowadays but I kinda liked that it pushed some buttons. At least I had a strong reaction to it unlike so many milquetoast anime out there you end up passively watching then forget about.

Having eight demons as the villains was fun but it's WAY too many to cover in this film. It made the whole plot seem a bit repetitive and scant. Like go for 3 or even 5 and develop them further as villains. That's basically what they did in Bloodlust and it worked way better. Also, the scene with the wasps just reminded me of any time Miroku tried to use his wind tunnel in Inuyasha.

Maybe it's a bit unfair to compare it to Bloodlust but if you do compare them then it fails to match it on every level. Bloodlust is a better Kawajiri film by a goddamn country mile so I can't help being mildly disappointed watching this film. But assessed on its own, it has merits and it has its flaws but on the whole, it was exciting and I did enjoy it. 7/10

For a old anime, its actually looks really good. I loved the art style and animation. But unfortunately story is like that of a cheesy b grade movie, At least characters are likeable.
Did they bring that villan from jojo. That guys was unkillable for no reason. And the nudity and passion...lol
Overall not a bad movie as least its worth for the fights and art style.

Pretty interesting anime, it seems to be talked about more often than other movies of the 90s in anime genre I know of,

Didn't expect this much nudity to be honest, but oh well seems that its part of Japanese culture at this point

It's an entertaining movie thanks to the sharp and beautiful animation for its anime and fact pacing that also feels like is the downfall of this film and why it will never be a masterpiece or a really great one at least.

The plot is really going fast and messy, the 8 devils who look cool individually barely get any screen time or any sort of moments, imagine the Akatsuki, Phantom troupe or Espadas all getting killed in an hour of content, that would be dissapointing wouldnt it. Yurimaru is a severe dissapointment, what could've been a hype up towards final fight turned into some betrayl fest that resulted terrible conclusion to his character

Genma is  looks like a half assed Jojo character, his fighting skills are cool but in the end nothing too interesting.

I'd say I can lean towards the agreement that this movie is influential for what it was for the time because at the end of the day the animation was the most memorable part of it. But like some other films it just suffers from fact that it would've been way better as a 10-12 episode anime series, where everything would have time to develop and get spaced out.

Not a boring watch its just not good enought to touch the high scoring or leave me wanting for a rewatch anytime soon

Anyone that doesnt like Ninja Scroll has no taste, smells of onions and is all round a terrible person.

It's true.
@Beatnik

13 years later, this is still true.

However, on today's rewatch, my thoughts (spoilers):

a) I still think it still has the greatest ninja action in the medium of animation, it's immensely cathartic and silky smooth. You can see a lot of stuff in the movie that series like Naruto would borrow heavily later on.

b) I'm less tolerant of sexual violence as I get older, so those scenes are quite uncomfortable. However Kagero at least has depth as a character, and mercifully the director did not have Jubei take her up on her offer to fuck the poison away.

c) It's a shame that most of the battles are too short. I'd have liked them to be a tiny bit longer.

d) I find it hilarious that the gunpowder lady is the last henchman surviving before the big boss.

Bruh, Kagero's character was just there to be assaulted (or mocked) and when she wasn't being assaulted (or mocked), she was being annoying asf. Laughable execution of her character.

Overall, very stylish movie but the plot was mediocre at best and the idea of dealing with EIGHT demons in less than 90 minutes was bad from the get go.

yeah,it is a good one,the begining was so potential,stone-demon,part of man's bodies a lot of blood and so on,but i don't like some moments:
-why did they include that many demons? some demons died too fast,in 1,5h film,i didn't got a thing about them(for example the blind demon)
-the story is too long, they rly better made the lenght is 1h

I get what you're saying about the movie—it had a strong start with some intense scenes, but the demon overload and lengthy runtime made it hard to follow. Speaking of things that are hard to follow, I recently had a similar experience with the South African SARS eFiling system. Logging in to "sars efiling login" can be a bit confusing, especially if you're not familiar with it. If anyone needs help, it's good to have the sars contact details handy for support. Sometimes, the simplest tasks can feel as complex as a movie plot with too many characters

Overall a very enjoyable movie. Is it a Masterpiece? In my opinion, no. Is it worth a watch? Well if you enjoy amazing action a great main character, some nice side characters and some villians with unique powers and very nice animation, then yes.

Ive had my eye on this anime for quite awhile and im glad i gave it a chance last night. I really didnt know much about Ninja Scroll coming into this and i thought it was gonna have more to do with some traditional ninja stuff so i wasnt expecting the people with demon like powers, though i did really enjoy each fight with them show off there powers.

Old animation is something i really like in anime. Especially because of how detailed it is.

Im glad i saved this as a birtday present to myself.

Really hard to watch. Compared to Vampire Hunter D by the same director this one was extremely slow and overall worse experience. Fights were okay, I guess, tho some of the demons were defeated way too easy and fast. Can't call it a bad movie, but maybe it didn't really age well

I saw this for the first time today and thought it still held up! The villains had cool powers, and the MCs easy going nature was fun to watch. My favorite fight had to be with the guy who had the wasps in his back. Such a wild power.

Loved it! It's a short, fun, action-packed ninja movie with some fantasy elements that doesn't try too hard, and that's all it really needs to be. The animation is fantastic! I'm a sucker for 90s anime and this hits the spot! The story is simple but satisfactory. If there's one word I could use to describe Ninja Scroll, it's "SOUL"! Overall would recommend.

I found this movie randomly and decided to give it a try, and wow! The action was insanely good and the story was nice.

I'm thankful we got some nudity of Kagero. I can't lie, the very first forced scene with her was hot. There's far too much sexually that happens for me to mention, but halfway through, when her captor is..."tasting her "juices", that was hot af. like damn.

but I'm be real, with how many time she was violated, I'd be running the opposite direction. No thanks, I'll find a girl who isn't a magnet for other men's lust.

I wasn't expecting that much nudity and sexual scenes, I figured it'd just be a samurai movie. The amount of nudity was half welcomed and hot and half "uh, why?"

There was one scene where a snake slithered out of the chick's vagina. That was, uh..interesting.

The visuals were amazing and I got some great pictures from it.

This was a great movie aside from all the weird nudity, sex and forced stuff. It would've been perfect without it.

@Beatnik You summed up all of my thoughts perfectly. The action was great and beautiful, and I would've loved to see more. but the sexual violence was a huge turn off. I mean, that was essentially the entire show. Fortunately for the writers and such, anime isn't really mainstream in terms of every day fol watching this and then forming a boycott over "glorifying sexual violence". If what happened in this show happened on a regular tv show anyone and everyone can tune into, there'd be so much backlash.

It's just of the era really, even Hollywood movies were 'rapey' decades ago, like in Blade Runner Harrison Ford's character basically forces himself on the love interest. Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun forces himself into the ladies restroom and charms the love interest too. It's really weird how we watched this kind of behaviour back in the day and were like "this is nice". Maybe we're evolving lol?

Well, anime not so much. There's probably more sexualisation of young characters today than ever before, so much 'male gaze' camera and outfits that would make a stripper blush. Ninja Scroll at least has the benefit of being unashamedly an exploitation action flick, it knows its tacky, and doesn't care. I have more respect for it than a modern anime that leers over its child characters while pretending to be serious art.

Just my jaded opinion anyway.

A true classic! I discovered the series a few years ago and really enjoyed it, especially the protagonist. It turns out this film was the origin of the franchise and is a more complete work with greater development of Jubei's character. I love it! I don't remember seeing it before; I recall looking for sequels to the series, but I mistakenly overlooked this one (better late than never).

The ideal title for this fantasy drama would be: "Love in the Time of Cholera"
