Cute that Belno made a horseshoe for Oguri, too bad she traded it for her spine.
That face Kitahara when he's called in by Rudolph, amazing.

Poor him though, knows he can't join Oguri if she gets scouted and goes to the nationals with Rudolph all just because he doesn't have a license to do so.
Belno's face disbelief face too, so much detail

Holy moly the amount of food Oguri eats when she's unhappy quadruples.
I'm surprised the cooks even had enough to feed her when she normally cleans them out with less food than that.

Kind of a messed up situation to put Oguri there at the ending there, win the 1600m dirt race and you get picked up by Rudolph go to to the nationals while leaving him behind, lose and you stay with Kitahara and participate in the Tokai Derby.

Also cute that Norn keeps on showing up and keeps on getting embarrassed, it is a nice 180 from how she originally.

That was a tough decision for both Oguri Cap and Kitahara. The best choice for her is, obviously, to transfer to Tracen and aim for the national. And for Kitahara, can't he take a course or an exam for a national license? He may join Oguri Cap at Tracen later, but it's better late than never.

  • It was a serious episode. As it seems the anime team needed much more time than usual, the long preview-like part after ED was omitted this time.
  • It was a totally unexpected reason what the old man's advice meant.

Kitahara is doing his best to consider Oguri’s future, but what does Oguri truly want? As she states herself, she wants to fulfill their shared dream of winning the Tokai Derby. Now with Kitahara’s ultimatum on transferring Oguri to Chuou (national races in Tokyo) if she wins, can Oguri give it her all?

This actually is a really realistic sports story. Sometimes pupil just surpasses coach capability and they need to separate - even if coach taught the pupil everything.
Happens all the time in various sports, some coaches just can't grow to the level of the best in the world and can't refine talent of this caliber because of this.

Pretty good timing with the time of this show’s airing, Kentucky Derby was yesterday (only horse race I really watch), horse I picked won (Sovereignty), feels good to be watching Uma Musume the next morning lol.

But man this turned out to be a heavy episode, maybe if Roppei had, idk, maybe told Jou exactly what he meant instead of being ambiguous this wouldn’t have happened lol, but I do really like this drama. The Chukyo race was the least of their worries, Oguri won that bitch easy lol, it was the great Symboli Rudolf (Rudolph? Not sure which spelling is correct) that was the true final boss, scouting Oguri for nationals sounds like a good thing but not when this means certain things can’t happen, like Oguri basically skipping the Tokai Derby for higher level races and Jou not being able to train her because he’s not licensed for national training.

Now one might ask why doesn’t Jou just get licensed, well idk either lol, but my guess would be because it’s not that easy, and someone else here had another good point, in real life sports this happens all the time with athletes outgrowing their original coach, it’s a sad thing but realistic. But Belno said it best, what matters most is how Oguri feels, and as of rn she wants to stick with Jou and race in the Tokai Derby, and also keep her promise of racing Fujimasa March there, this made me happy but Rudolf went and cut deeper by bringing up what’s best for Oguri, and that’s what brought about the big ultimatum at the end of the episode, being if Oguri wins the next race, she goes onto nationals. Not sure how I feel about this, it’s good drama but I don’t think it’s the right way to decide, I could see Oguri throwing the match on purpose, but something tells me it won’t play out that way, the next one should be very interesting.

And lastly, wasn’t expecting Belno to be a blacksmith lol, I wonder if this means there are horse girls that go into the profession of horseshoe making if they aren’t good racers.

So it seems Musaka’s fears were true after all—but the thing was, they were backwards. With Oguri finally running in the Chukyo Hai and winning it by a landslide, she has grabbed the attention of the masses and those who want to recruit her to compete nationally rather than regionally.

We learn an interesting fact: ashen-haired Umamusume can't run, and that explains why Oguri was weak and unable to walk or even stand as a child. But we've seen a handful now, including Oguri who have destroyed such notions.

When the Emperor, Symboli herself, wanted to scout Oguri for the nationals, this filled Joe with many emotions—most of all, the fear of losing her and being unable to compete in the Tokai Derby altogether.

I seriously think Joe should just let Oguri go to Symboli, as he’s not qualified at all. Even though Oguri strongly opposed the idea of going to the nationals, he persists with the thought that she should. At this point, he either needs to let her go completely or fully commit—go win the Tokai Derby with her, and then aim for the nationals together.

Knowing Oguri, I can say with certainty that she’ll lose in the Gold Junior—because she respects and loves him for what he’s done. Anyone would feel the same or be upset, just like Oguri, when their middle-aged-ass trainer trainer starts being unreasonable.

Belno racing: not very good. Belno supporting: Top tier

Musaka lost his wonderful hair in what 6~7 years, truly a loss.
Musaka I think really wanted that Jou 'hold his uma musumes' and first took the national trainer exam.

Need to check Tamamo Cross, those lightning eyes felt like that meme.

I may be inaccurate in some words, but here is what I know about gray horses' history especially in Japan:

There was indeed a widespread belief in Japanese horse racing that "gray horses don't run well," until the rise of Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross, and others.
In the early 20th century, as part of the Empire of Japan's warhorse breeding program, horses with conspicuous coat colors that stood out on the battlefield were deliberately avoided. As a result, their bloodlines were not passed down to future generations.
Similarly, horses with large white markings on their coats were also avoided. Merry Beauty (IRL Merry Nice), who won the Japanese Derby in Episode 1, was one of the horses that shattered this long-standing perception.
Out of the 91 Japanese Derby races held since 1932, a gray horse has won only once. However, in recent years, gray horses have been performing much better than before, with notable examples including Gold Ship and Chrono Genesis.

In the United States, a racehorse named Native Dancer was active in the 1950s. It seems that the belief that gray horses are slow never really existed in the U.S.

Oguri's first match on grassy ground turned out to be too easy for her, Chūkyo was the wrong place to be if you wanted Oguri to win the Tokai Derby because Chūkyo was the most conspicuous place among the national level. Even Symboli Rudolf directly invited Oguri to enter the national level.

It's good to see the trio finally getting serious about training for the match and thank Oguri for encouraging them to train, seeing March smile and giggle is so cute.

KITAHARAAAA, I even cried seeing him down like this, finally we get to see a little flashback of Kitahara, Belno to the point of tears and tells him that he needs Oguri to confirm if Oguri wants to go to nationals. of course Oguri will refuse if she doesn't want to go to nationals if not with Kitahara and Tokai Derby is the goal of both of them from the beginning, even Oguri said that she already promised Oguri and March will compete together at Tokai Derby.

At the end Kitahara decided that Gold Junior would be Oguri's final decision whether she wanted to win and go to nationals or lose and stick with the original goal of going to the Tokai Derby, and that decision was in Oguri's hands but, at Gold Junior there was March waiting and I really wanted March to get her revenge at Gold Junior. PEAK EPISODEEEE 10/10 AOTY FOR ME SO FAR, REALLY WAITING FOR NEXT WEEK.

The drama aspects are back for UmaMusume, and it's pretty well done.

They really did justice to the Emperor's aura without relying on cheap tricks like slow motion. Also them horsephones are back! Nice touch with the retro version compared to Pretty Derby. Did'nt expect them to literally to put lightning effects in Tamamo Cross running! Having knowledge of these stallions beforehand really adds to the fun (spoilers tho, but what is even that for non-fiction XD).

Good details with portraying Oguri's emotions with Ear Language. If I know it right, horses align their ears all over the place when they are stressed. I last saw them doing this with Kitasan Black in S3.

@TheColonel76 well because of their physical strength and dexterity, umas can have all sorts of professions here. Unfortunately they cannot follow real life racehorses in this prospect, because the only thing they do except for racing would be breeding...

Not sure about this drama to be honest. Oguri going to nationals is obviously what's best for her level of racing talent and is a much better aspiration than the Tokai derby, so that side of the indecision feels awkward. At the same time, the Jo side of it doesn't really work because it's not clear why he can't just go and get a license to be a national trainer and stay with Oguri. I'm sure there are good reasons for that, but it's a failing of the show for not explaining them and reyling on outside knowledge to justify its drama.

The way I see it, with the information the show has presented us with so far, surely Jo having trained Oguri to a level where she's being scouted for nationals should be enough to support his application for a national license to stay with Oguri.

Basically, as the show has presented it, this all just feels like forced drama to avoid the show ending too quickly with Oguri going to nationals and skipping out on the Tokai Derby.

It's kind of shallow honestly, after five episodes there's not much more to it. It's not bad by any means, but the story isn't really going anywhere and it's unclear where character growth can even occur. I actually grew up in a town with an active horse race track but I've always found it extremely boring lol.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Another fantastic episode. I can't believe how invested I am in this anime at this point.

I'm not sure why Kitahara can't just get his national trainer license. Maybe they will explain that at some point, but it seems like he was always focused on the Tokai Derby, so he never bothered. This would be good time to bother, haha. Oguri Cap wanting to respect her trainer's dreams was a sweet moment even though I am on the side of, "Get her into Nationals asap!" Wasting time against lesser competition is never a good thing. You never know when an injury or something life altering can occur. Anyway, I'm excited to see how this all plays out.

@Atavistic
That is well discussed in the animation. Kitahara's goal is not the Japan Derby or any other central race, but the Tokai Derby. Therefore, it can only be said that a central license is unnecessary. This is because, even now that he is shaken by the Central Japan Derby, Kitahara's dream is to win the Tokai Derby.

Also, as Oguri Cap said in this story, he was taught by Kitahara, grew up with him, and wants to return the favor. Therefore, she is trying to win the Tokai Derby, regardless of whether it is a central or regional race.

Kitahara then thought that it would be better for her if Oguri Cap went to the center, so he took that action.

Well...I think it's pretty bad of Symbol Rudolph to put pressure on her to move to the center, in effect forcing her to move.

Looks like Joe's uncle, Musaka, was spot on about avoiding the Chukyo Hai race, but not for the reasons I thought it would be. Mainly, she stuck out like a sore thumb because of how easy it was for her to win this race which, in turn, caught the full attention of Symboli Rudolph.

Now she's given him the offer for Oguri Cap to join the national races, which has left him feeling very conflicted. The most important reason why is that he only holds a trainer licence on a regional level, but not a national level, which means that if Oguri Cap does decide to go, he won't be going with her. I can only assume that getting a national level licence must be very difficult, so I do dislike the cheap criticism that Joe is getting here from those who should know better.

His backstory on how he was inspired to become a trainer was pretty nice. Musaka played his part in helping Joe to get off his backside and do something with his life and taking him to watch the Tokai Derby in person was what he needed, so it explains why his dream is to win that particular race. Also, Joe is a bit older than I thought he would be, which was a a bit of a surprise.

Either way, he had now given his choice to Oguri Cap. If she wins the upcoming Gold Junior race at Kasamatsu, then she will move to the national level. If she loses, then she will stay with Joe and they'll aim for the Tokai Derby together. I do see this playing through her mind during this race, so I hope she'll still try to give it everything she's got.

Overall, I really liked how this episode played out the drama and the potential progression that Oguri Cap and Joe will go through depending on how the next races goes.

It's just logic, a license isn't obtained overnight. A little common sense.
Joe isn't selfish either. A mare's career can end overnight due to injury, etc., We have also seen mares regress very quickly,
so you might as well put your ego aside and think about the best for your mare.

She has a national or even international level, even if this race from Provence is her dream, he thinks about Oguri Cap career and her reputation.
Why waste such potential? I think it's a very good dilemma regarding his future career.

even though I find Oguri loyalty magnificent

Trully an amazing episode. The beginning of the anime has already shown that but this episode confirms that we don't just follow uma's pov but also a bit more the trainers ones, which is really cool.
For the liscence, I guess it's not an option since Joe has almost never talked about it. If cap wins the next race it could've been cool to see Jo trainning her again at tokyo like way later in the anime or something like. But I think this scenario has 0% chance of happening.

@Lonely_Island I think he doesn't know the specifics. he only saw Oguri race and thought "she's too good here, and can easily get the glory that Kitahara has been dreaming of since he was a boy". Maybe he doesn't know Rudolf would be watching or asking Kitahara on a bigger stage, but I think he simply had a hunch that having too many eyes and opportunities on a big stage will lead to the dream being unfulfilled and Oguri moving on to much bigger things.

Based on what he was saying, I even think it might not even be that any more so than simply just "racing in here is a waste of time, it's too easy and she's over-levelled", basically, when he was advising Kitahara against it.

@Cainthazar If I may add a little more, Kitahara under-estimates his own abilities as a trainer.
It is both physical and conceptual to say that he is not centrally qualified. The fact that he referred to himself as a third-rate trainer is indicative of this.
Some may not even think of getting a license for that reason.
