did you try this? did it work for you? and other thoughts?

Dopamine fasting, or a "dopamine detox," is a lifestyle trend aimed at reducing overstimulation from modern, high-dopamine activities like social media, gaming, and binge-eating to recalibrate the brain's reward system.

Is there even a point when you're inevitably gonna end up in the same place due to how this society is structured? That's the first thought that came to mind when hearing about it. Like if someone who smokes an entire pack of cigarettes a day manages to stick to just 1 singe cig a day for a week before falling right back into the system laid out for them. The only difference being that you don't need to smoke to exist but you need to have a smartphone and be connected to the internet and news

Seems advisable, but I'm too lazy to try.

Not sure about the rest but I did it for binge eating in a really bad way. Let's say 3 full months. I used to go without even a single food but only water. My best record was 4 days and let me tell you i almost passed out. My whole goddamn body was weak af. My legs were shaking every time I tried to stand up. Despite all this I still countined to do it and ended up losing 20 kg in just 2 months. BUT DON'T DO IT AT ALL. After I got tested i had deficiency in all vitamins. And had to take supplements for a long time just to recover. So definitely don't even think about it. I only shared my experience. Reduce carb intake(don't fully delete it) and you will lose weight. Also try to move a lot especially after meals. It will help. Again anyone reading this DON'T DO IT.

@naoya3desu What the fuck you did water fasting for 2 months without taking vitamin supplements, let alone replacing basic electrolytes? That's insanely dangerous but I'm glad you got through it. What made you decide to do it and were you never told about vitamins and minerals? I think fasting is great but there are a lot of misconceptions about it

@NS2D thanks yeah I was living alone at the time. I wasn't fat but I was prediabetic due to high food consumption. I had it almost 4 years. So I was reading about it online and the internet said if nothing changes i will become diabetic so it was fear that hit hard really bad and made me do it. I was aware of the dangers but It was between bad and worse. So I was kinda forced to do it it's not like I wanted to. My blood sugar came down real fast like insane. Tho I feel so bad for not eating shit and I feel so stupid causeu body is still suffering from the consequences ( it's weak AF). Still i ain't doing it again that's for sure.

@NS2D You don't need the news to live - like 99% of it doesn't affect you in any way, and if it did, you'd find out about it pretty fast. And most of what they report is intentionally skewed to make you think things are worse than they are, because bad news statistically gets more clicks. I live my life without reading the news and I feel great - it lets me focus on the real problems in my life.

An addictive substance / activity is just one thing out of the several sources of entertainment you have at your disposal. If you can successfully quit smoking, you won't look back (I recommend Allen Carr's stuff - his method of quitting is effective). Society is structured so that you fall into a trap and stay stuck, but if you know about the trap and you know how to get unstuck, you can avoid it.

I haven't but the idea looks interesting. Might delve into it more later, since detox is always needed.

@naoya3desu you should have just done those intermittent fasting, 4 days is enough, eat high nutrient foods especially protein-rich when you break the fasting (since it made you feel full more than others) rest and do it again.. I've lose many weight too with IF 2 years ago. While also doing some exercise. Insanely I can do cycling for 40 KM back then while only fueled by water or liquids. But the energy is different with when you have eaten a food.

@ketorolac i used to do it and still do. I only eat 8 hours period per day. No breakfast and no late night dinner. But still nothing changed. I was eating chicken or ANY source of protein you could though of. Well in my case I wasn't "fat" I mean body fat but my weight was 80 kg and it was down to 58 in 2 months with this crazy way. Still I do brisk walking or whatever it's called basically going for long high intensity walks 3 times a week for 1 hour. But deadass I can't even do anything cause my body is so weak. Have to focus on recovering first and then do exercise or starting the gym.

@BatrachianBill No, my point was that you literally can't avoid it, unlike smoking which you can avoid if you really want to. You can't "fast" from news because as soon as you interact with another person you're gonna hear about them in one way or another

Fair enough, if the people you know talk about it all the time then I guess you can't really avoid it altogether. I generally try to divert the conversation to something different when people start talking politics, but I know that doesn't work for everyone.

There is no such thing as too much dopamine. You need as much of it as possible.
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

i need this right now ever since im home alone for the past week im getting addicted to the internet again and taking haloperidol barely works

The thing with Internet addiction is you need an activity that replaces it. It's not only a matter of less, it's also a matter of more. What do you have in mind that could fill the gap?

@deg Yes. In the meantime, there are plenty of activities you can do. You can go take a walk. You can read a book, a comic or a manga. You can do a puzzle, or play with a ball. You can write, draw or sing. You can go out in free museums or visit your neighbors. If you're really motivated, you can clean the whole home before your family arrives. You can try to cook something new. You can study a topic you like. You can tend the garden if your family has one. You can wear a white cloth on your forehead and shout BANZAI in the streets to proclaim your love for anime. Or you can just take a nap.

I'm trying to avoid doom scrolling, but it's hard when infinite scrolling is built into apps with occasional worthwhile content too.

I do this sometimes but more targeted and deliberate

When I draw I set my phone to grayscale and listen to music from my CD player. Reducing options and making the phone less fun has allowed me to focus a bit more.

It's just some dumb trend that uses pseudoscience as an argument to promote prudish behavior and more time working. Though it is often the case if you have too much of a good thing you can't appreciate it in full if it's always there to the same degree and doing too many things at once you don't get to focus as much.

You're lumping it in with other related things. Dopamine detox is FAR more extreme than that. It's literally cutting off any pleasurable activity.
